Subject: RE: whatever happened to joe stead From: GUEST,Big Al Whittle Date: 18 Dec 12 - 12:28 AM Mind your manners wee rover. Joe was the power behind Sweet Folk and Country, and as such immensely influential. He recorded and got on a professional footing many of the best talents around in the 1970's. Apparently the stage act was a bit and miss - he was too way out for many people, but when the magic worked it was sublime comedy. Five years layer when the alternative comedy circuit got going he would have been sensational - like Brownsville Banned. He used to have a column in the Folk on Tap magazine for a while. I'm glad he has gone on to do something else. Altogether a life of accomplishment and effort in folk music. Few of us can boast of achievments of similar ambitious scope and magnitude. |

Subject: RE: whatever happened to joe stead From: GUEST,guest Iain Date: 18 Dec 12 - 05:50 AM Joe did the recording for us when I was with The Crofters back in 1974 and I have had the pleasure of being a friend ever since. Don't get to see him much but he was a great help all those years ago to a good number of singers. Last time we had a long chat and a sing together was at the funeral of Alan McAvoy too long ago now but we gave him a tremendous send off and shared a few beers Iain |

Subject: RE: whatever happened to joe stead From: GUEST,funf Date: 29 Mar 17 - 10:32 AM From Facebook today: Dominique Stead to Joe Stead 7 hrs · London · With regret, I have that sad news of my Dad passing peacefully away yesterday afternoon. Joe fought to the end with Nora by his side. My Dad touched many hearts in his life and his goal was to entertain and perform on the big stage. Being with my Dad was never dull, he always wanted to tell a story with a song. The smiles on people's faces would make my Dads heart burst with pride. I'm sure many of you have happy memories to share. At this moment we are all coming to terms with things. Please share any photos, clips and memories with us as it will help ease the pain. One final goodbye from My Dad: Keep smiling, keep singing. Xx |
Subject: RE: whatever happened to joe stead From: GUEST,John Eliot Date: 30 Apr 18 - 04:36 PM I saw him at my college folk club in 1972. I have his LP in perfect condition, signed. Listened to it today. Haven't done for about 20 years. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Damn site more than Don Partridge whom I had to take off after two tracks. Sad to hear of his death. |
Subject: RE: whatever happened to joe stead From: Bat Goddess Date: 30 Apr 18 - 07:24 PM Curmudgeon and I only met Joe once...he did a house concert at Sinsull's in South Portland, Maine USA in March 2009. Very enjoyable concert. And he recorded Tom (search at YouTube for Tom Hall "Battle of Bull Run" and "Bound Away For Australia". That was less than three months before Tom lost his voice completely...and about six months before the diagnosis of Tom's vocal cord cancer. Linn |
