Kimber's Men are a delight - a wall of harmonies so huge it could defend the Tower of London!

Mind your manners wee rover.

Joe was the power behind Sweet Folk and Country, and as such immensely influential. He recorded and got on a professional footing many of the best talents around in the 1970's.

Apparently the stage act was a bit and miss - he was too way out for many people, but when the magic worked it was sublime comedy. Five years layer when the alternative comedy circuit got going he would have been sensational - like Brownsville Banned.

He used to have a column in the Folk on Tap magazine for a while. I'm glad he has gone on to do something else.

Altogether a life of accomplishment and effort in folk music. Few of us can boast of achievments of similar ambitious scope and magnitude.

Joe did the recording for us when I was with The Crofters back in 1974 and I have had the pleasure of being a friend ever since. Don't get to see him much but he was a great help all those years ago to a good number of singers. Last time we had a long chat and a sing together was at the funeral of Alan McAvoy too long ago now but we gave him a tremendous send off and shared a few beers

Spoke to Joe in Barnsley last Wednesday he does talks and singing type workshops to professional groups as well as part of active Kimbers men shanty type events

he is doing an upcoming Workshop after Christmas as advertised for The Royal Traditions on Shanty singing, no doubt still available to do his own Folk club spots etc

he must be 65 and is wearing well

Greenwich Village recording label, I think years ago lives Hebden Bridge? now

Joe is very much alive and kicking, living here in Sowerby Bridge, running a series of monthly folk concerts, singing here and abroad with Kimbers Men, recording CDs with them, (a new double CD just out), running a Youtube channel with over 600 recordings on it. http://www.youtube.com/user/banjostead?feature=watch

Joe and I share a birthday, but he is a couple of years older than me. He's a good guy, as are Kimbers Men. Always enjoyed what both he and they have done.

once I travelled with him as a floor singer to a gig.

a great night was had by all

on the way home I fell asleep

I were woken from my dreams by a firm left elbow to me ribs

and a warning that it would be unwise to go to sleep

once i travelled with Joe Stead

only once.

but I nicked his way of dealing with noisy crisp eaters in the front row,,just ask Chris Flegg

great motorise, glad to hear he's still at it.

ribs healing nicely seeing you asked.

only once

what madness

terrible scars

guess i wont sleep tonight

only once

happy Christmas

From Facebook today:
Dominique Stead‎
to
Joe Stead
7 hrs · London ·

With regret, I have that sad news of my Dad passing peacefully away yesterday afternoon. Joe fought to the end with Nora by his side. My Dad touched many hearts in his life and his goal was to entertain and perform on the big stage. Being with my Dad was never dull, he always wanted to tell a story with a song. The smiles on people's faces would make my Dads heart burst with pride. I'm sure many of you have happy memories to share. At this moment we are all coming to terms with things. Please share any photos, clips and memories with us as it will help ease the pain. One final goodbye from My Dad: Keep smiling, keep singing. Xx

I saw him at my college folk club in 1972. I have his LP in perfect condition, signed. Listened to it today. Haven't done for about 20 years. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Damn site more than Don Partridge whom I had to take off after two tracks. Sad to hear of his death.

Curmudgeon and I only met Joe once...he did a house concert at Sinsull's in South Portland, Maine USA in March 2009. Very enjoyable concert.

And he recorded Tom (search at YouTube for Tom Hall "Battle of Bull Run" and "Bound Away For Australia". That was less than three months before Tom lost his voice completely...and about six months before the diagnosis of Tom's vocal cord cancer.
