Subject: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Slim Eric Date: 03 Oct 05 - 06:16 PM Hey people can you recall a singer called Julie Felix who was around in the sixties? I just remmebered her and how much I was in love with her! OK so it was a fantasy that a lot of us had! Go on admit it. Is the lovely lady still alive and if she is what is she doing now? |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Blowzabella Date: 03 Oct 05 - 06:30 PM I think she's still working Eric - pretty sure I remember seeing posters for her at the venue where I work, last year - I didn't go to the show though, so can't comment on what she did. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Don Firth Date: 03 Oct 05 - 07:54 PM I saw Julie Felix only once. In the early Seventies, "The Val Doonican Show" was a summer replacement for "The Andy Williams Show," and I got to watching the Doonican show because he was personable, a pretty good singer, and he sang a lot of Tom Paxton's songs, among others. He also had some interesting guests on, such as Burl Ives. Many of his guests were singers I had never heard before. One was Julie Felix. She did a couple of solos and she and Doonican did some duets. I was highly impressed. As far as I know, other than the guesting in the Doonican show, she never got to this side of the pond, but I could be wrong. I've often wondered where she was and what she was doing. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Effsee Date: 03 Oct 05 - 09:22 PM Don, Julie Felix had her own show on BBC in the 1968 and had stalwarts of the folk scene as guests every week. She's still performing and her voice is as good, if not better, than ever! Check out her website as above. Remarkable woman. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: nager Date: 03 Oct 05 - 10:05 PM I too remember Julie Felix from the 60s and saw her here in Austrlaia at Newcastle NSW a few years ago at a small theatre. Got to talk to her after the show and reminisce a little about the 60s, especially the Isle of Wight 1969 festival which I attended. It was headed up by Dylan and Julie sang there too.. along with a host of others (but that's another story). Julie was actually married to David Frost for a time. At Newcastle she still sounded great (and looked good too!) and had her daughter with her. Great lady |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Rasener Date: 04 Oct 05 - 01:06 AM Julie Felix will be appearing at the Gainsborough Folk Festival in Lincolnshire England starting on Friday October the 21st. http://www.angelfire.com/folk/gainsboroughfolk/festival.html |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Sooz sans cookie Date: 04 Oct 05 - 02:44 AM Here is what it says in the Gainsborough Folk Festival programme: In 1964 Julie was the first solo folk artist to be signed to a major British record company. Since then, she has played all over the world and notched up 40 years as a professional musician. "Life is a journey. My journey has had its laughter and its tears, but I consider myself very blessed. I have made England my home, and you have made me feel loved and welcome...thank you from the bottom of my heart. May music help love and peace find a safe and secure place in your hearts." Why not come along and see her? (21st - 23rd October) |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Georgiansilver Date: 04 Oct 05 - 02:57 AM Looking forward to the Gainsborough Festival this year....I had a thing about Julie Felix in the 60's and saw her at the song competition final last year. She still looks good and I hope she does sing as good or better as someone mentioned earlier. Besat wishes, Mike. PS Come to the Festival...great last year!....greater this year? |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 04 Oct 05 - 04:13 AM Get in the queue GS - we all had a thing for Julie! :-) I can't wait to meet her at the GainsFest, just hope that meeting one of my heroines (not to mention adolescent lusts) after all these years doesn't turn me into Terry Fuckwit! I'm blushing already! LOL. S:0) |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST, Hamish Date: 04 Oct 05 - 04:28 AM She played The Famous Willows Folk Club in Arundel during the summer, and they had to put up "house full" notices ten minutes after the doors opened. Now there's a hot tip for club bookers. ~8^) |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: John MacKenzie Date: 04 Oct 05 - 05:51 AM Never a fan myself, I do however vaguely remember her singing as part of a duo at one time way back when, and they were good. Giok |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Fidjit Date: 04 Oct 05 - 05:57 AM Well Eric,Just to make you jealous. Back in the Sixties when she was at the Swindon Folk Club. I kissed Julie. Right on the mouth. Never been the same since. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST Date: 04 Oct 05 - 07:47 AM Saw her a few years ago at Redditch festival. Must say, I never thought much of her, one of those 'right time, right place' people who rapidly get left behind by the real quality people. Saw her at the Isle of Wight festival in 1969, and I must say I thought she was one of the lowlights of the afternoon. She was even reduced to singing Dylan covers before Dylan came on. How embarassing is that? But yes, I used to think she was pretty and she doesn't look all that different nowe. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Snuffy Date: 04 Oct 05 - 08:43 AM At the Bishops Castle FF in 2002 she took part in a Sunday morning singaround. Afterwards a delighted S*** Z***** said "Julie Felix borrowed my guitar! When I get home I'm going to boil the strings and drink the water" |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Jim McLean Date: 04 Oct 05 - 09:58 AM In the early sixties, Julie, Nigel Denver and I played the American camps in Garmisch Patenkirchen, I played the pipes! What a combination. When she decided to go to London I gave her my brother's address and she eventually met Bruce Dunnett through whom she arranged a contract with Decca. I don't think she ever married David Frost but she lived in the same building as I visited her once with my then girlfriend, now my wife. That whould be pre-1966 as we got hitched then. I haven't seen her for about 40 years but if anyone runs into her tell her I was asking after her. She was great fun. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Impressed Date: 04 Oct 05 - 10:22 AM What a crafty way to promote the Gainsborough Festival. Start what appears to be a totally unrelated thread asking what happened to Julie Felix then drop in a promotional thread about her appearing shortly at the Gainsborough Festival then follow-up with a few more threads about how wonderful Gainsborough is. Brilliant promotion! |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Georgiansilver Date: 04 Oct 05 - 11:31 AM Guest impressed is impressed eh? I suppose promotion of any sort has to be good but there is the odd negative vibe appearing here. Not all the thread has been positive. However, having not seen her perform for many years I can only look forward to sampling her singing again and hope she is as good. Bet she is!!!!!!! Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Georgiansilver Date: 04 Oct 05 - 11:33 AM By the way...isn't Slim Eric from the U.S? I have seen some of his posts and the use of grammar would suggest American rather than English. Perhaps someone knows him/her. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 04 Oct 05 - 12:26 PM Jim, Nigel Denver was the guest at the inaugural night of the first-ever Gainsborough Folk Club, and I wuz there! Small world innit! It was late-sixties (I lived in a permanent haze then, but I'd guess at around 1967) and it was at the Horse & Groom pub (better known by the locals as The Arse and Doom). The club went on to become The Bothy, and everybody who was anybody played there during the late 60's and early/mid-70's. I think Nigel was residing in Lincoln, and did for some time after. Heady days! S:0) |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Pompey Date: 04 Oct 05 - 03:53 PM Last time I saw Julie Felix was at the Railway Folk Club in Portsmouth in the late 90s. I have to say she wasn't brilliant. A colleague and I left early saying "Thanks for the memories". |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Jim McLean Date: 04 Oct 05 - 04:28 PM Strollin' Johnny, yes, I think he did live in Lincoln then but later moved to Birmingham where is is today. Heady days indeed and I think we were all in a bit of a haze. When we were in Germany I looked after Julie's suspenders when the temperature rose .. imagine, imagine! |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Trevor Date: 05 Oct 05 - 08:01 AM I've seen her two or three times in the last couple of years - that was a real nice sesh at the BC weekend that Snuffy referred to. I got a kiss from her as well. Saw her earlier this year at a village hall do in deepest Shropshire - I really like her delivery, although I can understand it not being to everyone's taste. And, topical today of all days, I think she was resident for a while on The Two Ronnies show - before Barbara Dickson. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Tig Date: 05 Oct 05 - 09:01 AM Saw her guesting at the Hardraw Gathering (not Rawhead Mr H) in August. This was part of her 'Rainbow' tour. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Clive Pownceby Date: 06 Oct 05 - 02:46 AM Had the pleasure, two years back in September 2003, of MCing her at Portpatrick Folk Fest.in Scotland and what a delighful woman to spend time with. All on the bill, including Anthony John Clarke, Vicki & Tref. Willaims, North Sea Gas and me(!) shared same dressing room!!!! Venue = village hall, so it was an intimate affair - concert AND dressing room!!!! Only one mirror - we let Julie have first use of it. She seemed to have several mobile 'phones all charging up at once!!!! Phew, Showbiz eh? A gracious lady and good company, she brought the house down and not just with her 60s material. She's still writing, and choosing others' first-rate songs. We all encored together with "Wild Mountain Thyme." A good memory to have. Long may she run. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 06 Oct 05 - 06:55 AM Yes, I always liked her in the '60s but hated that "ZOO" song that was done to death. Nice to know she's still active. RtS |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: BanjoRay Date: 06 Oct 05 - 09:15 AM The ZOO song was the worst thing anybody's ever done to Woody Guthrie. She used to murder some classic folk stuff back in the sixties, and only got anywhere because she looked good. Wrong voice, wrong guitar, a taste -free zone. Just my opinion! Ray |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Lanfranc Date: 06 Oct 05 - 01:36 PM The ZOO song was Paxton, not Guthrie, Ray! I've booked her a couple of times over the years, she was never up there with Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson or Barbara Dickson, IMHO, but I never lost money on her gigs. I seem to recall that she'd gone a bit militant feminist last time I saw her, but it was a while ago and that phase may have passed. Pleasant rather than exciting or charismatic sums her up for me. Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Georgiansilver Date: 24 Oct 05 - 04:27 AM WELL. No disrespect to those of you who were somewhat negative about Julie Felix in the current Folk scene but you must have caught her on a bad day! She was the Star guest at Gainsborough Folk Festival this year and brought some absolute magic with her performance, reflecting the protest songs of the past and present and cultural songs from her own framework. Her performance was dynamic and what a lovely lady! Best wishes, Mike. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 24 Oct 05 - 04:45 AM Yep, Julie's Very much alive and well, and is a remarkable lady. A truly powerful performer still, her incredibly powerful voice sounds great, she plays some fine guitar, and she comes across as committed to the world she loves as ever she was. I was a very proud guy when I introduced her at the Gainsborough Festival yesterday, and even prouder when I thanked her at the end of her (long by anyone's standards) set. She stormed the place, and she goes down in my book as one hell of a performer. Julie's one of the Greats. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: GUEST,Wendy re: Theatre on the Steps, Bridgnorth Date: 17 Apr 10 - 06:13 AM She IS still going strong, voice is better than I remember. It was good to hear old favorites after all these years plus songs she'd written herself that I'd never heard. She made the audience laugh & cry with passion & sensitivity and she came out after the concert which was a real pleasure to all of us who queued to talk to her. |

Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: Cusco Date: 17 Apr 10 - 05:53 PM She certainly never went away just cut down and changed emphasis. I was in Glastonbury a few tears back. The town that is not the festival. She was a main name artist at the Goddess convention. I then went to her more recently at The Square Chapel, Halifax. She was very good. Strange penchant for kicking her foot over her head and I don't think she'd changed the strings on the martin since the sixties. She did "Halleleluja" far better than any of the hopefulls on pop idol or whatever it was. She explained that Cohen had borrowed her guitar to write songs when they were in Europe at the start of the sixties. Pretty good. |
Subject: RE: What happened to Julie Felix? From: sapper82 Date: 18 Apr 10 - 11:37 AM Well, I saw her at Burntwood a few years back and then at Crich Folk event last year and the year before. Still very good and VERY professional! Last year at Crich And the year before |
