Subject: Lyr&tune?: Sentimento-old Spanish song
From: katlaughing
Date: 24 Aug 99 - 08:37 PM

Hi, all. Just remembered this old tune. Actually, I have no idea how old it is, but one of my best friends, an American of Mexican descent, who used to sing in a band, would get up on stage and sing it to me, when we'd all be out for a rowdy and fun night and that was about 25 years ago.

Anyway, he and the song are locked inextricably in my heart and I would love to hear the tune and know the words, again. The last time I saw him and his wife, my other best friend, he couldn't remember it. They will be celebrating a 50th year together next Spring, if I remember right.

So,, for Consuelo and Avenicio, I hope somebody can help me with it.

Thanks,

katlaughing

This title got my attention, but I can't remember any song titled Sentimiento. Could you give us some notes, or words, so as to dig deeper in our memory banks ?

If you search for the song in data bases, note that it should be "Sentimiento" (sentimento looks italian)

Hope you received my reply mail tonight.

Best regards, escamillo@ciudad.com.ar

HeyaAndres, I was so new to Mudcat, I didn't even know about posting a reply, I guess!:-) I don't know anything more about the song, but would still love to find it. My friend passed away about 4 years ago and I miss him, still.

Maybe with all of the larger memership, now, someone will know it?

Thanks,

kat

Two, titled "Sentimento", are found; sound clips are at the following:

Madredeus : O Espirito Da Paz

Mariachi Vargas : Valses Mexicanos (without words)

Masato, thank you. My friend's wife, also my friend, cannot remember the song, either. I hope she recognises one of these. Neither one sounds quite like the one I remember, but I think it's partly because I heard it acapella and also because it was many years ago. I will ask her as soon as hse gets back into town.

Thanks, again,

kat

"Madredeus ...," "Sentimento," is Portuguese, doubtfully the song you are looking for. None of the songs would be played by a dance band, at least in the form presented here.

"Sentimiento," unfortunately, may not be the title.

Thanks, Q. If memory serves that is the name my friend gave me when he sang it. At least that was the name I used to request it of him. And, he did sometimes sing it with a dance band; not Mexican per se, though the song, obviously was.

AMG - All Music Guide lists 29 recordings of something called SENTIMIENTO. There are apparently several different songs or tunes with that name. Then there are several similar titles: SENTIMIENTOS, SENTIMIENTO GAUCHO, SENTIMIENTO DE DOLOR, etc.

You could start searching from there or from Barnes & Noble and keep playing sound samples until something sounds familiar.

I think you may be inquiring about Cancion Mixteca. "...de sentimiento" is at the end of the chorus and it's the most powerful part of the tune, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was what you remembered.

If that's the one, I submitted the lyrics on this thread.

Kat, refreshing this just in case I've come up with the right song link, and you've missed the posting.

Is Cancion Mixteca (link in post above) the song you were looking for? It was a popular dance-band tune in the '30s or so, and as I said before "sentimiento" is the most prominent word in the song, even though it's not in the title.

The tune appeared as an instrumental in the film "Places in the Heart," much to my surprise, in its dance-band incarnation.

A famous instrumental version of later years is the Ry Cooder one in the Vim Venders(?) film "Paris, Texas" - but ALSO beautifully sung by Jenny Fitzgibbon in the sadly now-defunct girly salsa band "Cumbia Muchachas", out of Darwin!!

Cheers!

ClaireBear, so sorry I missed your postings way back when! I think this may be it! I found a new mp3 of it, as your link in the other thread didn't work. It's just a sample and not as good as it could be, imo, but it at least gives me something to have my friend listen to to see if she remembers it being the one her husband used to sing for me. It is HERE>

Thanks, so much! (Thanks, yvonne, for refresing this thread. Good luck!)

Note to 414delroy: Your request for "Little Poppy Dark Eyed Maiden" has been moved here (click) to its own thread. Please check that thread a few times over the next few days, to see if we've found your song.
Thanks.
