I think it would have said England 1914 if that was the song intended.

Amazon lists England as being on Water of Dreams (£10-99, delivery 2-3 days)

Mick

Thanks MCP, although that could be the music to England 1914 which he also wrote.
Ideally I would like the C.D. if anyone knows its name.
C-flat.

I'm not familiar with that one Breezy, but I've been asked to play the Ralph McTell song at a function in 2 weeks time. The "England" theme is important so I could well be interested in the Maggie Holland song too, if I can find it.
Thanks,
C-flat.

What about Maggie Holland's song 'A Place Called England'?

It knocks spots off the song you're chasing here.

For the life of me, I can't find this track anywhere!
Can someone please tell me which album it is on, as many of his back-catalogue albums don't contain track listings.
I need a copy of this fairly urgently so I hope you can help.

C-flat.

I was blind enough not to see the prefix. But I understand now why a Google search doesn't find the information. Made easy to overlook on purpose. Good on you, s2p, and many thanks for the work. It gave me two lyrics I had looked for for a long time.

Wolfgang

Hiya,
You will notice, if you go to the site, a "songs2play" prefix. Yep that's me, one of your fellow 'Catters.
The site has been a Mudcat Link for a while, and that's where I thought it would be best situated, a nice spot out of the way - know what I mean?

Hmmm.

Thanks, Wolfgang. I stand corrected, perhaps Ralph has bowed to the inevitable since I last looked. Folkie status reinstated!

I never claimed to be infallible, just hoped to be!

No McTell lyrics on the internet?

A very large number of his songs (including the one asked for here) can be found at this site

The reason that you can't find McTell lyrics on the Internet is that he is excessively protective about his copyright.

cf Harvey Andrews, Tom Paxton et al, who take a more open attitude.

Could it be considered that only a true "Folk Singer" is happy to disseminate his/her material freely? Could this be the beginning of that long-sought definition of what constitutes a "Folk Singer"?

Allegedly

Alan

Looking through the "Unanwered Requests" and had my memory jogged!
Better late than never!

ENGLAND
(Ralph McTell)

What is it about you, makes me feel this way?
When I'm leaving you, when I'm coming home
I'm lost for words to say.
And I know your faults and failures,
And the troubles that you've been through.
But it's more about what happens now
And what were coming to.

And the echo from the green hills
Runs through her city streets,
And the sun that shines on England
Well it lifts the heart in me.

What is it about you, that took men into war?
Rows and rows of crosses: Who remembers why what for?
The corners of these foreign fields,
The dust in them concealed.
Out of sight but not out of mind,
Don't you know that England feels?

And the echo from the green hills
Runs through the city streets.
The rain that falls on England
Well it washes care from me.

England, oh England
England, oh England
England, oh England

Don't make this out a battle hymn or a song of victory.
It's just a way to try to say what England means to me.
And our accents and our colours change
From the city to the farmland
From the moorland to the mountain,
From the river to the sea.

And the echo from the green hills
Runs through the city streets
The rain that falls on England
Well it washes care from me.

England, oh England
England, oh England
England, oh England

From the rolling road to the winding lane,
From the field to factory,
From summer's haze to winter's glaze,
And all the colours in between.
It's a stillness in the evening.
It's the heartbeat that I'm feeling.
Fron Cornwall to Northumberland,
From the Pennines to the sea.

And the echo from the green hills
Runs through the city streets.
The rain that falls on England
Well it washes care from me

England, oh England
England, oh England
England, oh England

I looked, and found NO lyrics on line. Ralph has two songs--one is England 1914, the other is just plain England.

Do you mean: "England 1914"?

Night stirs her inky finger in the waters of the day etc? All that business about lamplighters and so on?
