Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: GUEST,noddy Date: 02 Jun 04 - 04:44 AM i just thought how we can ALL be last. Each day some is last on that day..... so each day we end with someone different and then we are all last. the bad news is then its the end and still only 2450 posts to go. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 02 Jun 04 - 05:26 AM Sonnet 01/06/04 CMXV She does not know how hard it is to keep From running there, to seek to see her smile. She fills my thoughts: Might I hope for a while To hold her in my dreams? I yearn for sleep To show desire: Yet, can I from dreams reap What I should ask of her? How can I think That I have given care enough to link Desire to action? Should I for hope weep? She knows I care: But have I given sign Of how much I want to give kiss to skin? What should I do, to give heart hope to win This muse from whom such longed-for passions flow? What can I say, to any of dream show, When all I dream is to hold her as mine? |

From: beardedbruce Date: 02 Jun 04 - 08:18 AM " I don't know anything about sonnets but, from reading most of yours these lines don't seem to scan for some reason." Perhaps- it depends on the person scanning: there can be different accents depending on the person scanning... But I try to vary the structure to what I thing sounds right. I do not insist that all feet be iambic, "Am I crazy?" This is a topic that might require its own thread... 8-{E |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 02 Jun 04 - 10:53 AM Ellenpoly: First we have to define "crazy" and "normal" I write sonnets. Sonnets are not the preferred verse form these days. One would have to be crazy to write sonnets. Therefore, I am crazy. Find the newest one? |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: 42 Date: 02 Jun 04 - 07:05 PM that was a rhetorical question! rhetoric reponses only allowed. j where's Little Hawk when you need him? |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Blackcatter Date: 02 Jun 04 - 07:14 PM Speaking of hobbling - I am healing up. The hardest part I've noticed is to be short of breath when talking - Because it hurts to take anything more than shallow breaths, I've got to curtail my speaking. Not my posting though. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 02 Jun 04 - 07:32 PM Good that you are still functional. Take lots of shallow breaths, and post often. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: John MacKenzie Date: 03 Jun 04 - 03:41 AM I'm waiting! Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Ellenpoly Date: 03 Jun 04 - 04:09 AM Affirmative, BB. Read sonnets; determined you are indeed crazy... So am I. For different reasons. ..xx..e |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 03 Jun 04 - 05:41 AM Yes, but isn't that what makes life interesting? Have you ever had to deal extensively with "normal" people? |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: GUEST Date: 03 Jun 04 - 05:48 AM Yes BB, which is probably why I'm now an almost complete recluse. ;-D ..xx..e |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: GUEST,Ellenpoly Date: 03 Jun 04 - 05:49 AM Whoops! Sorry! That last post was from me...I'm in the library (last refuse of recluses)..xx..e |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 03 Jun 04 - 06:24 AM were you a cluse before you were a recluse? I don't go to libraries much. I feel any book worth reading is worth owning... I have about 50K volumes... There are several interesting CD collections of books that are out of copyright- "Library of the Future" is good. I think the Brittannica "Great Books" are available, as well. But I still like the real book sometimes. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: 42 Date: 03 Jun 04 - 07:15 AM how do you know a book is worth reading (for you) before you buy it? Are your shelves covered with dusty, one shot wonders or do you bring down favourites regularly? love to see the space that would hold a library that size! j |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 03 Jun 04 - 07:32 AM re space- so would I! Most of my books are boxed up, waiting shelf space- a few thousand are out at any one time. Some are reference, and not often looked at. A lot, ( maybe 30K ) are paperback sci-fi, that I cycle through over time, rereading favorite. And I collect Encyclopaedea Brittannicas... |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Ellenpoly Date: 03 Jun 04 - 09:54 AM By the by, I meant "last refuge" NOT "refuse"!! BB, I used to be a book owner, (as well as running my mother's bookstore). I collected thousands. But then I became a gypsy, and now, unless I can carry it, it doesn't come with me. So THANK THE GODDESS for libraries!!!! ..xx..e (Never was a cluse, but was something of a clutz.) |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 03 Jun 04 - 10:04 AM E: I sort of figured that... A gypsy, but not wanting to come to the Getaway? I hope I can survive the disappointment. The other problem is that unless I go to a MAJOR library, they do not have what I am looking for. I have never found Farmer (on Miracles, or on Demonics) in one- but I have them at home. ( Major texts on witch trials and angels, mine are something like 43rd printings, 1823) My 14th -18th century poetry shelf is far more than the local libraries- I am luckey if they even have complete works of the major poets. ANd they get rid of encyclopaedeas when the are 10 years old or so- I find the 11th ed. Britt. (1910-11) to be much more useful than what they have on the shelf, for anything about the 19th cent or earlier. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Ellenpoly Date: 03 Jun 04 - 10:15 AM BB, I'm in complete agreement with you about the state of most libraries. At the moment, I'm in a running battle with my local branch over their policy of ripping out any book that hasn't been loaned out within two years!!!! Your collection sounds absolutely enviable, and if I'm ever in your neck of the woods, I wouldn't mind an invite to nose around. In return, I'll cook spagetti!..xx..e |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 03 Jun 04 - 10:22 AM Well, you would be welcome, but spagetti is not something I should be having these days... |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Blackcatter Date: 03 Jun 04 - 06:42 PM Ellen, if I was to stop flirting with you, I might end up flirting with one of the Bruces. Bruces' Philosophers' Drinking Song Immanuel Kant was a real pissant Who was very rarely stable. Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar Who could think you under the table. David Hume could out-consume Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, And Wittgenstein was a beery swine Who was just as schloshed as Schlegel. There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya 'Bout the raising of the wrist. Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed. John Stuart Mill, of his own free will, On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill. Plato, they say, could stick it away-- Half a crate of whisky every day. Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle. Hobbes was fond of his dram, And René Descartes was a drunken fart. 'I drink, therefore I am.' Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed, A lovely little thinker, But a bugger when he's pissed. |

The only thing Subdury has that Blind River don't is the Big Nickel and way too many loosers and jerks. P.S. GO FLAMES GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 04 Jun 04 - 05:24 AM Thanks, Blackcatter. For you, Ellenpoly, anything... Did I put this one up yet? Sonnet 30/01/03 DCCLXXXIV Hope lost, and vision blind, I seek for end To my desire. Why do I dream, in dark And silence? I don't know reason to send All to this absence, where soul leaves no mark. I long for past, when words would have smile earned, Though memories offer dust: How can I think That I would rest, to have her feelings learned? What hope had I to ever two hearts link? I fear this future, without touch or sight, Too cold to allow rest. I'll not regret Past hopes, though perhaps know I have no right To dream illusions real, when we've not met. Yet, though I cannot dreams, nor feelings, share, Soul smiles, knowing that heart will always care. |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Ellenpoly Date: 04 Jun 04 - 05:32 AM Oh, BB, don't expect ME to remember what you've already posted! Just keep em rolling...and ignore all those nasty people on the Best Poet Thread. It's frightening to see how vicious (well, awfully critical) they can be. It's like a Poetic Pissing Contest over there, except that you're just offering up your work, which was the whole point of the thread, yes? It's the word "Best" isn't it? Get's all you folks (I'm being polite here, I really mean "men") into a right lather. Nevermind. You can always come here and lick your wounds (I'd offer to cyber-lick them, if it'll help). ..xx..e |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 04 Jun 04 - 06:04 AM ... I did suggest we change it to "beast"... Thanks... I don't mind critism, but "it sucks" does not give me much to help make it any better. Evre have Cheasapeake Bay steamed crabs? 8-{E |

Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: beardedbruce Date: 04 Jun 04 - 08:01 AM On the north side of Baltimore, in a small shopping cemter off ofRt.140, there ia a small restaurant named "China Best". They have sushi buffet, with some cooked dishes as well. Lunch is just various rolls, probably about 30 types. Something like $7 US for all you can eat. Dinner is a lot more $11 US I think. But they have the other type ( rice ball) then. Very good, and the turnover is about 10 minutes per tray. Probably about an hour drive from the Getaway site. |
Subject: RE: BS: In every thread someone has to be last! From: Ellenpoly Date: 04 Jun 04 - 08:03 AM That sounds like a good deal, BB, though figuring in the cost of a round-trip plane ticket makes the price a BIT more!..xx..e |
