Sonnet 33 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 08/12/00                        DIX

Dear muse, how can I tell you with what joy
I read your words? I would not wish to cause
You to lose smile, but silence will destroy
My hopes more certainly than death. I pause,
Upon the edge of falling: You have sent
More than I dream, but less than I desire.
But, know I care: My fears may circumvent
These walls to hope, but you still heart inspire.
Perhaps heart has flaw, to care and not know
You would not be so cruel. Yet, I have past
To form my future: How could my words show
How much I want for your sweet smile to last?
I know I cannot more of your time claim,
But I would rather Hope, than chance of fame.

Sonnet 08/12/00                        DX

I think that you must be a muse of Moon,
For daylight makes it hard for me to hear
Your voice, while night is filled with word and tune
Enough for all. Does your light, calming fear,
Wax and wane? Might I hope you would dream show?
Does verse reflect your aura? Can I try
To seize even an ember of that glow
And not be burned? Would trying make heart die?
I do not fear the night, but silence fills
My soul with dread. To be alone, without
Shadow of hope: Absence of concern kills
All I dream, and would make of future rout.
I care enough to risk my heart: I hold
No higher coin: It costs me more than gold.

"How many sonnets does it take?"

"To do what?"

(Okay....picture Snoopy in the Peanuts comic circa the late 60s. Clad in a WWI flyer's helmet and silk scarf, he sits morosely at an imaginary table in an imaginary French Cafe somewhere within a few miles of the front lines. He is on leave and getting drunk. Glowering over his foaming root beer stein he says to himself...)

"How many root beers does it take? How many root beers does it take to kill the pain? To make the mud and the fear and the blood and the suffering go away? Will this dreadful war never end? Will I ever see my beloved again and hold her in my arms? And will I finally get my revenge on the accursed Red Baron? How many root beers does it take!!???"

Sort of like that. ;-) I see your sonnets as a lengthy campaign against tremendous odds, rather akin to fighting a war that never ends against a foe that can never be vanquished. In your case the foe is romantic loneliness.

And that is why I ask you, "How many sonnets does it take?"

"All of them."

Sonnet 10/12/00                        DXI

From dark of night to dawn I think of muse
And wonder how I might know her desire.
How can I understand, or know her views,
Without her words? Without, verse becomes pyre
To dream: Just ashes to be cast on page.
I question how I feel. I should not love
But dare, though cannot claim it to be sage:
Heart has not power to keep dreams above.
Am I to wonder if you hear, or care,
That I do not some answer yet receive?
Am I to think you don't have time to share,
Or that I should my inner fears believe?
I must have faith that you still care: My whines
Are weakness. Yet, I pray you read my lines.

Sonnet 10/12/00                              DXII

I pray you sleep, sweet muse, that you might dream
Of heart's desire. Perhaps you will hear voice
To whisper that I care. Yet, would I seem
Too bold, to ask for more? I have not choice:
As muse, you hold my heart. I know you are
But mortal: Fate has given you the power
Over my dreams. You may be distant, far
From me, but still lend root, to let verse flower.
Still, I would see smile, and look into eyes,
To find out who you are. I seek to know
All that I might, so that I might be wise
In ways of winning muse, to help verse grow.
I seek to know you, mortal maid and muse,
Each aspect that can my heart's hopes refuse.

How about a Marvelish poem?

               To My Coy Penpal

Had I but stamps enough, and wit,
This coyness, woman, were not shit.
I would perhaps then wish to write
And of my simple dreams make light.
You in your books might seek to find
Some gem-like phrase; I'd let my mind
Wander to subtle quotes. I'd try
                To find some verse to virtue ply;
And you could, if you wish, require
An epic poem to light your fire.
This High Poetic love would grow,
Stanza by stanza, to skill show.
A hundred lines should serve to lend
A likeness of your face; I'd send
Two hundred to adore each tit,
And thousands more, to show my wit.
An ode to least to every part:
Perhaps a sonnet for your heart.
For, woman, you deserve no less,
Nor would I shorter verses bless.

But at my pen I often see
The cost of postage's rising fee:
And all I'll send will be one page -
A verse or two to set a stage
For fond farewells. You will alone
Seek out the verse, now cold as stone,
That I once thought. Then worms shall taste
The letters Post has often raced.
                Your green-inked words will turn to dust;
And into scrapbooks, all my lust.
                A poem's a fine and fancy thing,
But does not quite reveal love's sting.

Now therefore, while the chance remains
To meet again without the pains,
And while our letters can still find
Each of us without other binds,
Now let us think that we might play
With more than words, at least today:
Rather than wait until the years
Have chewed us up with all our fears,
Let us now risk an evening's time
Without the bother of this rhyme,
And see if what we each desire
Might match, and thus our pens retire.
Thus though we cannot make our mail
Show thought, yet we can souls empale.

Sonnet 37 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 11/12/00                        DXIII

The moon casts shadows, both from trees and from
My fears, illuminated by this light.
A silver glow: It cannot help but come
From muse, my verse's source. My dreams take flight,
To think of her. Yet, can this light reveal
More than desire? Can it of future show?
I seek her words to find meaning, to seal
My hopes to fate: I would her secrets know,
To find reason I care. I have not felt
So filled with words: I know she is the cause,
But what source is her power, that I melt
Before her light? The unknown gives me pause.
I reach for heart's desire: But will I find
All of my dreams exist just in my mind?

Sonnet 38 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 12/12/00                        DXIV

I fear that I might lose the voice of muse
Now found after lost years: I cannot name
The sorrow that would bring. I dare not chose
A path away from her, to heart reclaim.
I fear that I might never see her eyes,
To look beyond her words, and seek her soul.
Yet, dare I take the chance to realize
Her power to shatter, or to make heart whole?
I fear that I might find, only to lose,
My heart's desire. How can I care so much,
Unmet? I know not fate: She may refuse
To fulfill hopes. How can I her heart touch?
I fear a loss far greater than these three:
That heart may speak, and her friendship might flee.

Sonnet 13/12/00                        DXV

I am but mortal, that I wish to hold
Onto what I've found. You have given hope,
And brought back verse to life: Am I so cold
As to ignore desires? Has heart the scope
To worship muse, and not care for her form?
I care, yet wonder if I have the right
That dreams desire: Might I my hopes keep warm
With thoughts of you, and visions of your light?
You know only my words: How might I show
That thought of you is source to verse, and dreams?
How might I dare to let these desires grow,
Yet keep you as my muse, to heart redeem?
I would risk all, save your smile, for your kiss:
But, aiming for your love, what if I miss?

Sonnet 40 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 18/12/00                        DXVI

I have not heard your words the past few days
And cannot tell how much the silence pains.
How can I hope, without words to show ways
To bring your smile? Yet my desire attains
Not less, but more: I still would seek to know
When I might look into your eyes, and see
If muse be more than dream. Can my words show
How I desire, yet fear? Is my heart free
To turn away, if you seek end to verse?
I cannot know, but think not: I have found
You to inspire. I might silence rehearse,
But find I am with faint whispers still bound.
I write these lines, but whispers still in mind
Cause me to seek your light, though I am blind.

Sonnet 19/12/00                        DXVII

I call out your name in the night, but hear
No reply. The whispers fade, without word
And without smile. As moon grows dim, my fear
Grows stronger still: How can I be assured
When I have lost my focus on my muse?
I drift, reaching for stray lines, to pull dreams
To harbor. I have not anchor to use,
To keep from drifting in the night. It seems
Too quiet, here: I pray, but hear no voice
To bring me verse. Where is my muse, this cold
And clouded night? Is heart to have no choice
Between silence, and risk of being bold?
My words become as ice, to fall and shatter:
Without words from my muse, what does it matter?

Sonnet 12/10/01                                DCX

Have I reason to be concerned, that you
Have sent no word for several days? I know
You're busy, and I should not fear, but do:
I fret, though lines in journal your health show.
I know I am fool, when I know for sure
That you are well, and have no time to spare.
Yet, I miss words; My greed for you is more
Than even I think wise: But still I care.
I should not ask of you as much as what
I do: You have enough to occupy
Your time. Yet, can I ask that you not shut
Me out of mind, that I must watch dreams die?
I know I have no right, yet might I pray
That you will offer words, and my fears slay?

Sonnet 42 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 22/12/00                        DXVIII

My mind is quiet, silent as a grave
Where dreams may be interred. I do not hear
The sound of distant voices: Am I knave,
To seek some word? Will my muse reappear
When moon reflects on silver snow? I hold
To hope: I dare not imagine I'd lose
This new-found muse. Yet, evenings are now cold
Without the flame of dreams for verse to use.
My heart is heavy with regrets, that I
Have not yet seen her smile, nor heard her voice.
I do not know if further line might try
To find way to her heart: It is her choice.
Yet, might I plead to look into her eyes,
And seek for some sign of missing replies?

I certainly don't want to get ahead of myself here...

btw,

Sonnet 43 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 25/12/00                        DXIX

My muse weaves webs to capture soul, of love
For its power to hold, and of moonlight,
To tangle dreams that seem to fly above
Control of heart. She sits up late at night
And forms her magic. How could heart escape
From such sweet capture? How can mortal stand
Against hope of heart's desire? Her hands shape
Spells that ask for naught, yet my thoughts demand.
My dreams are moths, attracted to her flame,
Though they cannot survive. I am now caught
Between fear and desire: My heart would name
Her muse, but can she be one dreams have sought?
I find I love her now, for being muse:
Yet her spells still my heart and dreams confuse.

Sonnet 28/12/00                        DXX

Placing my dreams upon alter of heart,
I pray my muse might send some hope, or lend
Me words to put some passion in my art.
What might I offer, that my muse might bend,
And smile in my direction? Heart's desire
Might make me bold, but I would have her speak
Of what she will, and let her voice inspire.
Is this to be my fate, to always seek
Beyond all reason, for what I would hold?
I do not know how I could offer less
Than caring, for words emotions enfold.
Yet, dare I hope even to muse confess?
I worship muse as source of light, but know
I cannot see beyond what she might show.

Sonnet 30/12/00                        DXXI

The moon is now a needle, curved to sew
The nets you form to capture dreams and snare
Stray souls. Without words, only heavens show
Such signs of muse. Yet, could I moonlight share,
And still stay distant? Lines echo in heart
In seeking muse, and friend, and dream. Are you
So much more than you seem? Are you a part
Of future? My heart cannot know as true
What still remains unseen in eyes: You hold
Inspiration, but do you hold desire?
I wait for dream, but still hope to be told
When I might see you, and questions retire.
As muse of rare degree you hold my mind:
Would that you to my dreams could be as kind.

Sonnet 46 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 04/01/01                        DXXII

I think of muse, and dream of her sweet smile,
But dreams are all I have: I have not seen
Into the depths of eyes, nor can I, while
She remains at this distance. Does she mean
To keep me here, or is it again Fate,
Now fighting my desires? This ebb and flow,
First finding muse, then causing me to wait,
Wears at my hopes: How might I future know
When present remains hidden? Shall I plead
Beyond my verse, to see her? Should I take
This silence to speak volumes, or not read
My fears to dreams, and not my heart awake?
A new year starts, and, with it, I must pray
That I might see smile and her eyes, someday.

Sonnet 05/01/01                        DXXIII

Without some word from my muse verses die,
Leaving but shells, and scattered lines that hold
Faint chance in desert dreams. How shall I try
To grow hope in mind, when silence has told
The fate of my endeavors? Dare I weep
For future, mourn what will not be, and know
I cry in vain, when tears are all that keep
My lines alive? And, can tears even show
How loud this silence is, and how much pain
The absence brings to heart? I will not say
I have earned more than smile, but to remain
Unknowing, without hope of finding way?
I do not ask for her soul, or her heart:
But pray for her words to give to my art.

Sonnet 06/01/01                        DXXIV

Dear muse, I have no hope to hold your heart,
Yet pray you read my words: Can they not reach
Some part, to keep your friendship, and to start
At least conversation? Will you yet teach
How to control desires, or harness dreams?
I may despair of looking in your eyes,
But will you send your words, and let the beams
Of inspiration help my verse be wise?
I do not know why you fill thoughts, or send
Such music to my soul: I reap harvest
Of poetry, but fear silences rend
My dreams to dust, and heart beyond all rest.
Perhaps this is the cost I pay for verse:
That light of muse is balanced by this curse.

To quote "The Princess Bride"

"As you wish."

Sonnet 49 of 68 to Kelly.

Sonnet 07/01/01                        DXXV

My dreams have visions of you now, dear muse,
For you are beautiful: How can I keep
From dreaming of your eyes? My heart could lose
All sense of time, within your gaze: I weep
To know I will not hold you. Shall I dare
To say how sweet your smile seems, or reveal
How much I want to run fingers through hair?
That muse is such a vision my fates seal.
I would that I might touch your cheek, and see
If you are real: Though known mortal, you seem
From higher plane. I cannot dare to free
My soul to love, in case you are but dream.
Your eyes capture my heart, and I am bound:
Can any words on page tell what I've found?

Man, the agonies you must have gone through! It reminds me of my own romantic misadventures over the last 3 or 4 decades.

Yes, but "It hurts so good."

Sonnet 50 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 25/10/01                                DCXIX

I wish my hands could touch you, perhaps tease
A little, and then all of desires please.
If love is just a dream, then let us sleep
Forever, my arms around you, and keep
The fire of your heart inside of my verse:
Would that I could hold you, instead of terse
Messages: I could read in your eyes more
Than words might say, and let my passions soar.

I offer you far more than dreams, as much
As I might have, but know only words touch
Across this distance. In heart, I regret
That Time allows no more than verse to set
A crown upon you: As muse, you now rule
The landscape of dreams with one subject, fool.

OOPS! another miscopy.

That SHOULD be

Sonnet 08/01/01                        DXXVI

Can any words on page tell what I've found?
The thought of you gives me my verse, and dreams
That find me in the night. I wait for sound,
Not spoken, to inspire: The silence seems
To be but voices, out of reach. I try
To place feelings on page, but do not know
If you hear my desire. I know not why,
Or how, but thought of you holds me, as though
Heart has no choice. Yet, shall I dare, to care
When you've other concerns? I cannot reach
To that part of you that might feelings share.
Is there no hope to lend presence and speech?
Heart does not allow choice: You bring the light,
No matter if you remain beyond sight.

Sonnet 10/01/01                        DXXVII

No matter if you remain beyond sight,
I hope to read your words, dear muse. If fate
Is that we never meet, I dare not fight,
But don't wish to lose what I've found, of late.
The ice dusting ground seems carpet of gems,
As cold as dreams without you. But they shine
And lend beauty to night: Cold dreams, like stems
Without flowers, do not visions refine.
I hoped for heart's desire, but I would take
What friendship you might give: You remain muse
Regardless. You have caused verse to awake:
I would not any part of you refuse.
I seek to hold you as my muse, but know
I could not write if I did not care so.

I could not write if I did not care so,
About you: Your words reach my soul, and hold
A part of me long lost. But can I show
With words what your words share? Without, I've cold
Imaginings. You are my muse, to send
Such whispers in the night. I would not trade
The thought of you for gold, nor would I end
My vision: Dare I show dreams hope has made?
You are my muse, and yet, I dare not claim
More than few words, and smile: You have not sent
Enough of heart to let my verses name
You more. Must all dreams of you remain pent?
I cannot offer more than heart and soul:
Can you see future where I might play role?

I certainly hope not! But these are a corona...

Sonnet 53 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 18/01/01                        DXXIX

Can you see future where I might play role
As other than the fool I seem to be?
Can heart afford to pay whatever toll
My dreams demand, or will these dreams now flee
As have my hopes? Can you return a part
Of the concern I offer? Shall I pray
For understanding, when I feel my heart
Has less of you than I might wish, today?
I hold you as my muse: Though I desire
Dream, I dare not ask for more than smile, now.
I would not have you of my verses tire,
But without hope, my words to silence bow.
I do not ask for love, but can you write
Some words of how you feel, to restore light?

Can you see future where I might play role
As other than the fool I seem to be?

I'm not sure. That depends on your capacity for change.

Can heart afford to pay whatever toll
My dreams demand, or will these dreams now flee
As have my hopes?

That depends on the strength of your heart.

Can you return a part
Of the concern I offer?

Ummm....okay...sit down. Are you sitting down? Ready? Don't get your hopes up too high! ;-)

Shall I pray
For understanding, when I feel my heart
Has less of you than I might wish, today?

Sure. Go ahead and pray all you want. It's free.

I hold you as my muse: Though I desire
Dream, I dare not ask for more than smile, now.

That's reasonable...

I would not have you of my verses tire,
But without hope, my words to silence bow.

Silence always wins in the end, doesn't it?

I do not ask for love, but can you write
Some words of how you feel, to restore light?

Righto. Okay, I feel great. Never better. The birds are singing, the breeze is blowing gently, and the river flows by undiminished. My cup runneth over. ;-)

Sonnet 54 of 68 to Kelly

Sonnet 24/01/01                        DXXX

Some word of how you feel, to restore light
To dreams, would feed my verse. Yet, you now send
Faint hope for future, and no hope for sight
Of eyes reflecting my desire. The end
Of hope does not my passion place in grave:
To cease to care would be to cease to live.
Yet, what words might I send, to my hope save
From dissolution? Heart would have me give
My soul for your few words: Am I to yield
All that I dream for this faint hope, unfounded?
Yet, dare I hold my thoughts, and keep dreams sealed,
When I would have my future verse unbounded?
How can I my hopes light, without your flame?
How can I verses find, but not love claim?

How can I verses find but not love claim
From within heart, without some word to base
My visions on? Can dreams remain the same
With no reply? Am I to future face
With no sign of your smile? I can but ask
For indication of your mood, to show
Some guidance to my verse. Does silence mask
Wish to be left alone? If so, bid go
And I will flee. You control my vision,
As my light: Without, I see only dark
Demented dreams. I wait for decision
With hope that I might in words find some spark.
Though you seem to by silence verse refuse,
My dreams have visions of you now, dear muse.

Last should have been

"Sonnet 55 of 68 to Kelly"

I think I should just start over at the beginning- that way you can get the flow of feelings without my mispostings.

Sonnet 10/11/00                        CDLXXVII

Could I look in your eyes, I'd hope to find
A muse to hold my weary heart in thrall.
Such I might dream: Yet, would I with dreams bind
Soul to another, when I Past recall?

Might I know more of you, to understand
All you might ask, and what you might refuse?
Raise not my hopes, that heart might heart demand,
Except that you would hearts and souls yet fuse.

Keep what I offer clear: I do not know
Enough to know where these desires might lead.
Let time and conversation serve to show,
Least I my dreams into your words might read.
Echos of past show paths I dare not go:
Yet I would know if you might fill my need.

I have not looked into your eyes, nor seen
Your smile, yet I would call you friend, and care
About how you might feel. I do not mean
To push myself on you, but concern share.

I have not heard your voice, but seek to find
Your thoughts within the words you send. I read,
And try to see how you might be, in mind:
I wonder, that I see in you, my need.

Do I but see reflection, that I see
That which I wish to see? Are you a dream,
To match all my desires? Might you yet be
The muse I seek, and all that you now seem?

I do not know, yet know I must decide
If to see you, or from future hope hide.

Do I ask for too much, too soon, to seek
To look into your eyes? Must I pretend
To not care for your smile? Yet, would I send
My words, if I did not care? I am weak
Against emotions: Would you have me speak
Without my heart, as if you had not power
To drive dreams to despair? Would you spend hour
To seal my fate, or free me from this peak?

I am trapped- All directions lead me down
To an abyss, save that I look to you
For inspiration. Would you raise vision
Above this? Is my hope to be but clown,
To amuse? Can I hope to know your true
Opinion, without risk of derision?

Sonnet 17/11/00                                CDLXXX

In lilac scented smoke my muse reclines
As I ask questions, to determine how
I might encourage smiles. I seek for signs
To tell how I might capture dreams, for now.

In moonlight I might find within her eyes
More than reflections of my own desires:
To see past stars within some future skies,
And feel within my heart emotions fires.

Yet in soft flame, I might more meanings find
Within her look. I seek to center know,
That I might have some guide, and not be blind
To what I ask, and seek in verse to show.

I shall light candles to my muse, to seem
As stars around her haloed hair, and dream.
