Our friend Rick Fielding passed away Saturday evening March 20th. after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Originally a native of Montréal, Quebec, Rick was smitten by folk and blues music as a teenager.. He later moved to Toronto and in a career that spanned over thirty years toured extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain and the United States.
He recorded albums for Folk Legacy and Borealis. and happily managed to finish his latest album "Acoustic Workshop" while struggling with his illness.
Apart from touring and playing his own music Rick taught acoustic techniques on guitar, banjo, mandolin and dulcimer, ran workshops on songwriting and professional development for musicians, did custom leather work, and hosted the radio show Acoustic Workshop on CIUT-FM 89.5.

Above all Rick was a giving person as a performer. teacher and friend.He will be missed deeply by all who knew him.

A celebration of Rick's life and music will probably take place in late spring. We'll post more information here as it becomes available.

In so many ways Rick represented to me the best of what Mudcat had to offer. He was kind, he was funny, he offered helpful hints on guitar method, he knew traditional as well as contemporary folk and most of the people who perform it. I never met him, but our exchanges in this forum made me feel as if I had a good friend in Toronto.

I will find some solace in his music today, and we who called Rick a friend can all take strength from the "handful of songs" he has left us.

Pam's in the next room playing a dulcimer which Rick gave her, and I'm trying to find words.

I'd always hoped that someday he'd be across here and I'd get a chance to meet him and hear him. He'd been planning a trip a few years ago I seem to remember. Not to be.

Rick's presence here on the Cat was one of the best things about the place - especially the technical threads he'd start about guitar playing. It'd be great if someone could bring them together in some way, maybe as a permathread with an index or something. Did he ever write a tutor book? If he didn't perhaps the advice he gave in the threads could be the basis of one.

Heather, My deepest and most heartfelt sympathies at this time,He was well liked and much loved in his time and who can ask for better than that.
I was so taken with Rick when I met him at the Getaway, so much that i sat in on a Guitar workshop he ran with Jed Marum on picking styles, since I do not play guitar or any other instrument you will understand the mans ability to communicate his Joy and love of his instrument when I tell you that the time flew by and I was not bored for a second.

Although I didn't know Rick personally, I did exchange a couple of PM's a while ago..........I think that the warmth and generosity of the man's spirit is embodied in his many postings to Mudcat and in particular the way he tried to share his skills, knowledge and experience. I am one of many here who never met Rick face to face, but are stunned by his death nevertheless. He wrote in a posting here about a year ago that he would just have to face the situation with as much dignity and humour as he could. I guess that's what he did. All the time I wanted to believe that this wasn't really going to happen.
I can hear his lovely singing and playing on his CD. Maybe that's what he would have wanted. My condolences to all his family and many friends. We won't see another like him.

Heather, Wendy and I send all our love. You're a very special person and we will be thinking of you lots.

In all my years in music Rick was the person I most wanted to spend time with, and I know a lot of other people felt the same. I met him late in life and really resented the fact we lived an ocean apart. He was highly intelligent,loved a discussion,was curious about everything and very honest in his opinions. He was a great listener and story teller. His love of British humour was endearing, the Goons particularly tickled his fancy. He was fascinated by the lives of the creative. I remember his enthusiasm for the diaries of Benjamin Haydon and Kenneth Williams and his joyful response to a biography of Lord Buckley I'd sent him which he read twice in a matter of days.
I've not met a better man or friend than Rick Fielding and I'm going to miss him terribly.
He gave me a leather guitar strap he'd worked with the title of one of my albums on it. I've worn it to every gig since, so Rick will be on stage with me until the last song.

Rick was an extraordinary human being first, an extraordinary musician and teacher too. The human being--generous, kind, funny, incisive, thoughtful, courageous, intolerant of injustice, patient with those who were struggling (musically, personally...). I was lucky to have him as a friend. We are all still lucky to have his songs on recordings. This is such sad, sad news.

I will never forget the friendship this man shared with me. He will forever be with me as he was on a sunny June day. His friendship was freely given, his caring nature easily felt. He was one of those people that you felt like you had known forever, even though just met.

Heather, you know that you have deepest condolences. One of the inspirational things that have come of all this, was watching you and how you were there for your Rick every step of the way. No one has ever had a more devoted and better partner to face this journey with.

So now it falls to us. Finding his voice in others will be easy, all we have to do is look around. Anyone who ever met him carries it.

I think I shall forever remember him at the last Getaway he and Heather attended. There he was in the blues pickup session with the players he loved playing with, the cream of the crop, players that would challenge his abilities. This is the one he was waiting for. As he is playing he notices a young woman, clearly a new player, skills not quite there ... and what does Rick do? Sits down in back and starts giving her lessons and tips on how to hit the changes.

Well done, good friend. We are all better for your coming, and sad at your going.

I can't begin to say how sorry I am for the loss of Rick. I won't pretend to know him nearly as well or for as long as many of you have. I met Rick through the Mudcat. I will say that I considered him a friend.

Rick was an extraordinary person who inspired me not only musically, but personally. I don't think that I have ever met anyone so in tune with who he was. He lived his life according to his rules, having foregone having to play Jimmy Buffet songs to drunks in bars to play his music on his terms. Rick was creative, inventive and most of all supportive of anyone who was interested in being supported by him. I could go on about his incredible love and knowledge of music, but I won't. We've all seen it here. It was Rick the person that I was drawn to, and it is Rick the person that I am missing now.

I always thought that Rick and Heather were one of the most remarkable couples I've met. Rick could not have been Rick without Heather. I know that Rick's pain is now over, Heather's is just beginning.

I know that Rick was an agnostic. I am not. I hope that it is me who is right.

Rick, thank you for making a difference in my life.

I first met Rick when he came to play in Washington DC back in 1999. It was the beginning of long admiration for both the man and his music. I got to know him better here at Mudcat, and then when he came to the FSGW Getaway.

I think the line for guitar lessons is forming three hallways down on the left from the Pearly Gates. With his infinite patience, everyone in heaven will get a turn. The heavenly music of the guitar will supplant a lot of harps.

We are going down the vally, one by one... so hard to say goodby to such a young one of us- and yet his is a very old soul, and familiar to mine, even though we never met in the flesh. I always wonder where our souls "pass on" to; what is the next world like? I wonder...but whatever it is like, Rick Fielding will be a wonderful and welcome addition. I feel that Death is an end, but also a beginning. I read these words through tears. I feel the loss of a great soul to our world. I feel priviledged to have known Rick, and his kindness, humor and love of music. It's hard to think of what I want to write. There are so many things running through my head now.

Heather, I love you.

He was my best friend. He'd share secrets of the "don't ever tell anyone this" variety with me, and shortly after would write it all in a post or put it in the liner notes to his CD. It took a very long time for me to believe he really cared about me as much as he did. I thought I was nobody. It's a hard thing to do to make a person change the way they see themselves, but he did it. He made me believe there is something in me that made it worth his love and faith in me.

Over the too-short time I knew him, I came to discover he was a lot deeper than I'd imagined, and I'd imagined he was pretty deep. I think he hid much of that depth, undoubtedly because it would have scared some people. I remember once feeling the need to tell him what I felt about his influence on my life. He let me ramble on, and when I got done, said, "I knew that." He did, too.

He said he knew how much folks cared about him, then came the CD release on-line and the hundreds of e-mails from all over the world. I think maybe he had a bit more of a clue after that.

There hasn't been a day that's gone by that I haven't thought of him, and I don't think that will change anytime soon. I'll think of him very time I pick up a guitar; every time I play his melodeon; every time I try to improvise something on any instrument; every time I write a song; every time I see somebody play a wimp F chord; every time I drink a vanilla milkshake or eat fried eggs, something with the Dreaded Vegetable in it, grits or cornbread, and every time I laugh at something others don't think is very funny.

I have one of his straps too. When I was up there at Christmas, I was removing the back cushions on the sofa so I could sleep on it, and found a strap that had fallen back there. I told Rick about it the next day, and he gave it to me. He'd always meant to make one for me, but never managed. He said he thought this one was the first he'd made, and he'd used it on his mandolin. It's not very fancy, and it's beat all to hell and has "RICK" on it in great big letters. I don't think he could have made me a brand new strap that would be as precious to me as that one is. It's not as precious as the memories I have, though.

There's a picture I've been 'painting' on computer of a cabin, high above a lush green expanse. Its walls are made of music, and inside, there is always love. Always.

What incredibly sad news. The fact that we knew it was coming lessens the shock factor, but not the devastating sadness.

I can't think of anyone who made a greater impression on folks at the Getaway -- not only as a musician, but also as a friendly, generous, intelligent and fun-loving person. And his knowlegeable, patient and humorous contributions to this forum will be missed sorely.

When i read of the sad news, i immediately played the LIFE LINE c.d from 1995 which he had recommended to me on a mud cat thread. I feel so fortunate to be in a community where the performers, songwriters, and record label people all interact here on Mudcat. It is a credit to the importance Rick placed on educating musicians that the chords are included along with the lyrics in the "liner notes" what a great inspiration and rare gift! And what a treasure we have hear to be able to celebrate the life and music of such a wonderful man, such as in his album release event of a few weeks ago, where we were able to be together through the efforts of radio and computer technology.
The words on the c.d. which jumped out at me were:
from So Long, Charlie:
"He'd sing....joys of love and sadness when it ends,
... Now millions know his songs and the love he had for life,

from "If Jeses Was a Picker":

and when I heard LIFELINE by Glen Reid and River Man by John Hartford I couldn't help but think that there may be some paddle
wheel steam boat in the sky that has a couple of fellows leaning
on the rail and watching the swallows swoop by the deck!

I've been running all day doing that Mom and chauffeur thing, and my mid day stop found the news, but no time to process. But as I jumped back in the car with two kids Acoustic Workshop was in the CD player and for once, music choice was not debatable. I had a couple of hours between drop off and pick up just to wander.

I kept coming back to the discussion we had in Toronto after the CD Release. How could something that held so much caring and community not be Spiritual ? Of course it is. I was playing with words yesterday to try and share some stuff I've been reading on this, but it wasn't quite ready yet.But it's community and caring and reaching out to others to come join in the song, it's cutting through the bullshit to ask the questions that matter... Stuff that Rick encouraged in each of us in different ways. This thread is just one more example.Of course you know my tears are flowing, and yes, Heather I can hear you abrubtly changing the subject...By the way, we won in the damn cub scout derby (theme not speed), pictures to follow. And hugs...

I can not find the words to express how or why it should be that I could feel this loss as deeply as I do, never having met Rick in person, but only through a couple of cards and PMs. And I know I am not alone in this. Across the globe, are so many heavy hearts because of Rick's passing. Here at MUDCAT, we are just a smattering of the lives he has touched. I think of the countless others who mourn his passing. There are very few people who have made as profound an impression on my life as Rick Fielding did. To have been blessed with the grace of his presence, the charity of his spirit, the depth of his wisdom and the gentleness of his heart is an honour I will forever charish.

I didn't know whether I could or would post to this thread today. And for the most part, I won't. What I want to say and what Rick would well understand, others might not.........so I'll hold that a bit.

Rick and I came to the 'Cat within days of each other and in those first months amazed ourselves with the relationship and friendship we had developed so quickly and so closely. It was unlike either of us. We also spent a lot of time in PM's gossiping like a couple of old hens. The 'Cat was just beginning to gel and some of you will remember those days well.

If your heart is empty tonight, fill it with all that Rick left us for the remembering. The music, stories, advice, kindness, caring, love, and the very words he wrote here, are far more than any heart can hold. What we got from Rick and that which we pass on from him assures an immortality that no religion can give.

For many of us he left even more and with a debt to him we cannot pay. For me it includes a little ditty named "Catspaw's Rag," written by a caring and gentle man who, when he could do nothing else, did what he did so very well.......wrote a song for a critically ill friend......

Dammit Rick................I loved ya' man.............still do........

Although I have been reading messages, it's been well over a year since I posted one but the news of Rick's death changed that. I only knew Rick from Mudcat. I exchanged a few personal messages but mostly I saw from his postings how generous and patient he was. He was one of the central core of people who were a continuing reminder of what a special place Mudcat can be. Rick is an example of how someone can enrich lives by being true to himself and to his enthusiasms.

I'm grateful that mine is one of the lives he touched.

Well, just before today's matinee performance of Fiddler on the Roof,I went outside and in my heart dedicated this one just to Rick. I kinda felt sure all afternoon that he was watching. It was the smoothest, best performance yet. Thanks Rick for all you've done.

I would be honoured just to merit one atom of the love, respect and sorrow that is being shown here for Rick. Like so many others, I never had the chance of meeting him, but he was so much a part of Mudcat, that I cannot but feel and mourn his passing.

I never thought I'd see this happen. I never did meet Rick, but I'll never forget how he made a 19 year old feel welcome in Mudcat. He did a great job of tolerating everyone, including myself. Mudcat will never be the same! I'm not sure if any of us will ever be the same either.

I told him how I walked up the big hill at last year's Getaway and heard it coming from somewhere. I was momentarily confused, because Rick wasn't there, and I'd heard him. I looked for a long time before I saw you sitting on the bench, and you also wished he'd been there so you could get the lick from him. I think you had it, friend.

It's kinda syn-whatchamacallit that Sorcha's doing Fiddler on the Roof for Rick. I'm playing his treasured old guitar in a production of "Cabaret", a show that is fun and naughty on the surface and at the same time deals with some very profound questions about human nature. And the guitar chords and timing are completely @#$%^&*!!! I'm just trying to figure out all the G-flat-minus-13-squared and the 7/64 rests and all that...figuring out what chords to skip or simplify and still keep the beat... show opens Thursday and I'm just gonna do it the best I can for Rick.

All I knew of Rick Fielding was what he posted, a few photos, and what other people said about him. I don't even play the guitar.

Yet when I saw this thread at the top, I cried. Such is the power of the Mudcat. The love and respect that this community has shown for him demonstrates very clearly that here was one extraordinary human being, and I felt a sense of great loss.

Dear Heather,

I'm so sorry to hear about Rick. Kept hoping it was not true and wishing he was secretly getting better. May you take comfort in knowing how many of us mourn with you. He was a wonderful man and together you were a wonderful couple. I will treasure the memories of your two visits to our house in Branford and remember the joy of those jams and those hilarious conversations over pancake breakfasts.

The next few months will be difficult for you, but time of course makes it easier, despite how it may feel today. Life is hard for the living, and we can only be grateful that Rick's trials are over. No one knows what happens in the next stage, so we carry on and rejoice in the legacy our loved ones have left behind.

Rick left a "lifetime's worth of song" as he said in his Sing With The Angels. We can continue to hear his beautiful voice and musicianship in his recordings and even hear his voice in the postings that Mudcat has recorded for posterity.

A little bit of what Rick himself once said about the Mudcat:

Reading Quentin Crisp's books "The Naked Civil Servant" and "How to Become a Virgin". I realized (in a sort of blinding flash) that I could stop beating myself up for not being ambitious, and that there can be a LOT of fun in living the life of an under achiever.

Mudcat...It's helped me learn SO much about human behaviour (mine as well as others') that I can hardly believe it.

I met Rick a couple of times at the Getaway, but mostly I admired him from afar. He was a wonderful musician, but more than that he was a wonderful man - the kind of guy one could aspire to be.

One of the time I met him I was suffering from a migraine. I mentioned it to him, and he commiserated with me that he also suffered from migraines. It seemed that just talking about it for a couple minutes helped quite a bit. In retrospect, I don't know if he actually suffered from migraines - thought I think he did - but he was the kind of person who might have said he did if he thought it would help.

Rick is admired, he is missed, he is remembered.

    Sunday afternoon, after learning that Rick had crossed over, I sat playing my guitar with Susette. Rick was in the background of my mind. As I came to the guitar break, I began to play things I had not played before and I found myself reaching for new notes, new combinations, and new tones. Then Rick came clearly into my mind. I felt he was informing my playing and lending me some of his great skill. It was an uncanny and yet strong and collaborative feeling.

About 10 or 12 years ago Rick wrote this gosple song and with his blessings, I sang it to the packed congregation of St. Andrews, Presbyterian church in Burk's Falls.
Rick and I had done a concert together in this same church a few weeks previously, so these folks certainly knew of and appreciated the man and the song.
I know it tickled Rick to have his tune done in front of a live Christian audience and I gave him a copy of the taped performance.
After hearing the sad news yesterday I dug out the tape and listened, for the first time in all these years.
Tears flowed freely from one who never cries.Tears for the old friend I'll never see again, but tears also of optomism and hope, that were clearly written in the words of his song.
He's definately working a new gig and still singing a song.

It is with great sadness that we learned of Rick's passing.

Heather, our hearts are heavy today and if there is anything Donna or I can do to help in any way you know you can call on us.

My remembrances of Rick are many, as a musician's musician who did not just live the life many musicians want to live, but lived the life many musicians SHOULD want to live. Who played where his music would be appreciated, not just where he could get work. As a font of knowledge on all things musical, most things baseball and many things political. As a very good and caring friend, and one who would not shy away from telling me what I needed to hear, as opposed to what I wanted to hear. As the man who introduced me to my wife.

And as a great husband to Heather. Rick was very appreciative for the life he had as a musician, and was happy to have been able to live his life as a player, and teacher of music. That appreciation was dwarfed by how much he appreciated Heather.

I had the pleasure, some 15 years ago, to sit with Rick as he reflected - no, gushed - on how incredibly lucky he was to have found his life's mate in Heather, and how panicked he was that she might not return his love, or that somehow in his flood of unbridled emotion he would scare her away. He opened his heart to her completely, holding nothing back, and he met nothing but love in return. I know this was life-changing for Rick, and i suspect it was for Heather as well. We should all have that. You two did, and always will.

Rick, I will mourn your passing. I will regret many of the things not said between us in the past few years, and I will remember lessons learned from my friend and sometimes mentor, many of which are musical, many more of which are not. I will continue to intersperse your licks, badly played, throughout my music, but most of all I will remember my friend as the man who was giddy in love with his wife for all the time they shared together, that he knew he was a better man for it, and that no matter what else happened, he was a very lucky man, who shared his life's love, music, with Heather, the love of his life.

Godspeed my friend, I'll weep for you today, and sing for you tomorrow, and laugh for you as soon as I can.

I didn't know Rick, and I'm not a guitarist so I didn't follow his posts in detail, but since I joined the Mudcat his presence has been impossible to miss and always enjoyable. Like other Mudcatters with such a passing acquaintance with him, I found tears coming at the announcement of his illness and now at his passing. I wasn't going to post, but this morning's project was some research for a music class I teach (2nd grade) and I was struck by some of the story on this web site about Moussorgsky's composition, Pictures at an Exhibition:

In 1873 the artist and architect Victor Hartmann died at the premature age of 39. Although he was an artist of energy and talent, today his name would hardly be known, were it not for the inspiration his friendship provided to that strange and moody genius of Russian music, Modest Mussorgsky. The two had met three years before at the home of their mutual friend, Vladimir Stassov, and had quickly recognized in each other a sympathy of aim and purpose.

Hartmann was part of a growing movement of artists and craftsmen whose aim was to develop a new aesthetic, based on traditional Russian designs and motifs. Eschewing the classical architecture of Europe, Hartmann designed structures based on medieval and contemporary folk styles. And what Hartmann and his colleagues were to architecture, Mili Balakirev and his circle (which included Mussorgsky) were to music.

Mussorgsky was devastated by Hartmann's death. In a letter to Stassov, who was then out of the country, the composer's grief poured out in a spate of wild and bitter words:

    "This is how the wise usually console us blockheads, in such cases; 'He is no more, but what he has done lives and will live'…Away with such wisdom! When 'he' has not lived in vain, but has created - one must be a rascal to revel in the comforting thought that 'he' can create no more. No, one cannot and must not be comforted, there can be and must be no consolation - it is a rotten morality!"

Mussorgsky nonetheless found his consolation or, at least, a certain amount of catharsis. Stassov, on his return to St Petersburg, organized a memorial exhibit in Hartmann's honor, featuring his dead friend's drawings and watercolors. Upon attending this exhibition, which opened early in 1874, Mussorgsky experienced an almost overwhelming torrent of inspiration:

    "Hartmann is bubbling over, just as Boris did. Ideas, melodies, come to me of their own accord, like the roast pigeons in the story - I gorge and gorge and overeat myself. I can hardly manage to put it all down on paper fast enough."

My condolonces to those who know him best but I know that anyone who's life he touched will miss him. it is a great measure of the man that we only corresponded a couple of times, when I sent him some stuff on tape, but I felt that in that brief interlude he had become a friend.

I find that some people are like that and Rick was one of them. The greater the man, the sadder the passing, but happier are the memories.

My condolences to Heather and to all who loved him. I spent an evening with Rick about 16 months ago and he seemed well on his way to recovery from the initial bout with cancer. He looked good, sounded great, and said that he was feeling better.

I have special memories of the three times that Rick and I interviewed each other on our respective radio programs.

The first part of this Thursday's edition of Folk Roots/Folk Branches on CKUT will be a tribute to Rick and include songs from all three of his CDs. It begins at 9:00 am (eastern).

CKUT is broadcast in the Montreal area at 90.3 FM.

Like many others who only knew Rick through his posts here, it's difficult to say anything that others haven't said. He was certainly a remarkable man.

I'll just paraphrase something that Rick wrote on an obituary thread for a guitarist who died from a similar disease, at a similar age:

I will fondly remember, for as long as I live, the three concerts of yours I attended, the Hudson Valley Folk Guild, Hyde Park, NY concert you shared with Sandy and Caroline, and the two Branford, CT concerts (and the jam sessions that followed at the Shaw's). I will miss you, but your music will live on in me. A finer gentleman I never knew. May you rest in peace, friend.

Like so many people here on the Cat I only knew Rick through the Cat, He has had such an influence on so many people it is becoming an understatement to say that he will be missed.
I heard so much about him last year at the Getaway that I know that I would have liked to have met him.

Well I'm new to the mudcat, but not to Rick and Heather, I'm one of the lucky ones who got to know Rick (and Heather) through weekly guitar lessons from him, many years ago now.

Heather, my heart is broken for you, and my tears have been flowing as I read these amazing posts. You will remain in my heart, and I hope, in my life.

Rick truly did live by his own rules, didn't he. I spent so many evenings in the basement, picking, singing and smoking cigarettes (!) and listening to his stories, about how he skipped school to see Ingmar Bergeman films at a too young age, how he couldn't stand an office job, how he finally broke out of the drunken bar scene to get the respect he deserved as a folk legend. Rick truly had an encyclopaedic knowledge of music trivia (including the truly banal - I remember a story about Lester Flatt's pistol that he told me, which actually helped me finally nail the 'G' run!), and one to be admired. He was so kind, and funny.

I'm so sad he's gone, so sad he's never got to meet my husband (who even I hadn't met when I was working with Rick). He carved me a leather guitar strap which I proudly wear and show everyone I can... My regret is not having taken time to see him in the last years...

Someone mentioned Rick was agnostic, but I have no question that he's on the heavenly side now. I just wonder who he sat down to pick with first: Maybelle Carter? Charlie Poole? Big Bill Broonzy? Bill Monroe?

Has there ever been such an outpouring of heartfelt grief and sincerity on Mudcat? Not in the several years I've been checking this space. This is an apt tribute to one who certainly made this a much better place. Rick cut a wide path on Mudcat, and I suspect, did so in other areas of his life as well. He will be greatly missed but will live on in his music and in the hearts of those who knew him and those who shared a table at the Mudcat Cafe.

I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting, playing and singing with Rick - it was a turning point in my life. He was gracious, friendly and encouraging - in a word, he was Rick Fielding. Gentle, kind, blunt when necessary but always very human and accessible.

Rick - I've not been able to come back East for a few years and we'd always hoped to get together on my Coast -- now, I know you're here with me and with all your friends forever. I'll always treasure my special guitar strap, remembering how you tried really hard to craft those wisteria blossoms on the leather - it was so difficult when you didn't know what wisteria looked like - but you did it...

The stories you told me about people you'd teased with the kelp rattle I made for you made me laugh. They still make me laugh.

Heather, wrap yourself in the love that Rick kindled in all of us that knew him or were touched by him. I wish it didn't have to hurt so much.

I've been avoiding this thread. I opened it only to read the first post and a few after that and then left it to let the tears leak. Now I will try.

I only met Rick briefly at Mystic one year. I was so impressed that I blew the last of my meager funds on his cassette. I almost wore it out. I learned songs from it and it led me to other musicians and their music. When I joined Mudcat I realized that Rick was here too. I read his posts and enjoyed his humor and patient teaching. They were some of the high notes of this site. Then I read of his illness and saw how he met it and fought it, and I learned that he had bravery to spare and he was well cared for by our little community.

And now he's gone. Heather, I want you to know you have my deepest sympathy. His departure has torn a hole in the world that no one can easily fill. We are all lessened by this.

It's a measure of the man to read the length of this thread and others regarding him. What a thing, to have touched so many. What a life well-lived. I didn't know him at all, but clearly saw his shadow all across this site. On one of my first posts, I was upset about something musical and expressed it in an awkward way. I was mugged by posters in the hundreds, many of whom misread or didn't read what I had said. Rick was one of the few to recognize the compassion I had tried to express, support my feelings and gently suggest that I take the edge off my message. Practicing peace, I think they call it. I'm very sorry he has passed, but very impressed that he has lived.

I've been away for a while and when I returned today to "read the cat," I was deeply saddened to read this news. Like many others here I never met Rick personally but like others I felt that I knew him. He was I believe, a funny, articulate generous man who loved his wife and friends. He was I felt a guy who put a lot of thought into his postings and always seemed to have a lot of time for those who for one reason or another needed a little encouragement. You lit the room when you were here Rick but the lights dimmed when you rose to leave.

Like a lot of people here, I never met Rick, and also like a lot of people, I felt like we were friends. Over the years, we went back and forth about a lot of stuff, but most of all, music. We liked a lot of the same music, of course, but if he liked something or someone that I hadn't heard of, I'd make a point of checking it out, because always knew it would be good.

The thing that most impressed me over the years though, was his willingness to help anybody who was trying to learn, whatever their skill level--Mudcat wouldn't be half the place it is, if he had not been here, jumping in with support, advice, and instruction, every time somebody posted a playing question--

A lot of musicians don't have any patience for people who are learning, and a lot of others have no patience for people who don't play exactly what they play--Rick's example kept that kind of attitude out of Mudcat, and brought a lot of good musicians and aspiring musicians in--

I have some of his recordings, and I always meant to come up there and hear him play, because I know there was lot that he could do that he never got a chance to record--I thought that when I he saw me come in, he'd smile and shout out a greeting--and that he'd come over and chat at the break, and ask me to come up and play "Eight More Miles to Louisville" or some such thing, and afterwards we'd talk and play music all night--sorry that it'll never happen--

For all that he was such an authority in his field, Rick was as unassuming a guy as you could shake a stick at. In fact truly exceptional in that respect. And I could never fathom where he found the time to be so passionate about a whole range of other interests, going far beyond folk guitar and blues. Quentin Crisp and Kenneth Williams spring to mind of course, but I lost count of the times he would enlighten me on the background to some small point I'd made. In particular I appreciated his perspective on how the brilliant and eccentric Bach pianist Glenn Gould was received in his home town of Toronto. I never got round to erasing all Rick's PMs, thank goodness, so now I can print them off as a lasting memento of as decent a spud as I never met.

I don't even look at macaroni and cheese the same way, ever since Rick's story about it!

Saturday night I had a celebration party for springs arrival. I brought out a bowl of strawberries and whipped cream and played the Strawberry Mudcat CD while we ate. Rick opens that CD with 'Rag, eh?'
While the tune played I talked about Rick and his new CD and his battle with cancer.
Little did I know we were celebrating Rick's life that night.

What can you offer to a surviving partner you've never met upon her loss of someone you never met ? Awkwardly enough, I can only offer this:

The man reflected in all of these posts knew enough about this odd condition we call "life" to probe it, savor it, share it, try to make it worthwhile....with a sense of play and of the comic that its absurdities require. The loss of someone that conscious and alive can take you up, change you, enable you to go on and do and share in ways (small or large) that you may not have done before. And - if and when it does - it doesn't make any of the loss go away. It just transforms it into something you can do good with. An odd sort of low-key miracle.

Doesn't work that way for everyone. Doesn't have to. There are other ways to go on. But when you've been close to someone who really did his damndest to live (or hers) it can work that way.
I know that now. And Heather, I truly hope it works out so for you.

It's amazing to be so grieved by the loss of someone I never met.
But not really surprising, when I think of it. I 'knew' Rick through his music -- his wonderful voice and craftsmanship and the spirit that shone, and still does, through that music. But I also 'knew' this extraordinary human being, not only though our limited contact at Mudcat but, most importantly, by the way he touched the lives of so many of the rest of you 'catters, like Marion, Amos, Susan, and others.

Rick, I sincerely hoped to meet you in this life. Guess we'll have to save that for the other side.

I want to jump in for a minute and tell you all how absolutely proud I am to be a part of this company. The insights I have seen here would knock Rick out. I do know Rick, and know him well. In that, I am blessed. I got to spend a fair amount of time with him and Heather, stayed at their home, and experienced their love, conversation, and that magical garden. Yet even with all that exposure, I didn't have any better handle on this man than many of you that had never met him 3D. You are why Rick found such joy in this community, and found it at all times fascinating. And I will add that it is at all times caring and insightful. I saw this thread after getting back from a really gruelling band practice on Sunday. I thought I could not get any lower - before I saw the thread. I met Rick cyberly - never in person. What a pity and my personal loss. I've trying to find the right words, and am now giving up and going with my initial reaction -

I seem not to be the only one whose joining MC is much on "this character Fielding" (as Joe put it on some thread) to blame. I sure did enjoy his tone of voice from the very first post of him I read!

Last May I had made up my mind to suggest to Sari Kaasinen (former Värttinä member, now, a.o, the artistic director of Kihaus Festival in Rääkkylä, Fin), that she should try to get Rick 'over the waters' one day to perform and make a workshop there. Before starting typing e-mail, I opened the MC with Rick's health update thread on top! It made me sad, because somehow I felt very strongly then that it was never to be.

I am in England and have not had access to the Mudcat until now. I am at a loss.

I first met Rick through Sandy and Caroline at a house concert in Worcester, MA. We had a glorious night of singing and Rick accompanied me while I sang 'All of Me'.

I saw him again a couple of years later when he opened for Tom Paxton in Framingham and drew a standing ovation. Another glorious night.

My deepest sympathies to Heather. You are in my thoughts. I will sing a song for Rick tomorrow night at Bacca Pipes in Keighley. Rick may be on another journey, but his memory and his music will live on.

Sandy, Marion - I think we all know how much you loved Rick and how hard this must be for you. This goes for all those of you who haven't checked in or have written only a few words, Rick knew I wrote things out and sometimes never shut up. I can multi-task: write and cry at the same time. For me, it's part of the healing process - I remember and sort out my thoughts. Writing or not has nothing to do with how much we loved him...love him, just how each of us deals with grief. It's OK.

Something else Rick made me think about, and believe: similarities draw us together, but it's our differences that make us interesting to one another. He was very understanding of those differences and never would have liked living in a world where everyone thought just like he did. Whatever anyone's thinking or feeling right now, whatever you do or don't do, write or don't write: if you knew Rick, you know he'd understand. I do, and I offer my love to anyone who misses him, whether you write or not, whether I know you or not.

I took mandolin/guitar lessons from Rick. They were going quite well... that is until Rick invited me to hear him play one night. Then that was the end of my lessons. I became a fan and instead of learning something in my lessons, I went to listen to HIM play. I brought him in a John Gracie CD because there was a song I wanted to learn. I never did get that CD back :) he loved the song.

i have known rick since he was gracious enough tot allow us to tape performance on ciut for an issue of fast folk magazine in nyc

i have known him to be so giving unselfish and a wonderful aquaintence

my only regret was not "hanging out" with him thought the years

I've been away from Mudcat for a while and happened to see this by chance. I'm shocked and saddened.

Rick made so many generous contributions to Mudcat and was one of the main people I thought embodied the spirit of this virtual community. I hope that by reading this thread his family understand how he has left his mark on people all around the world, most of whom never met him in person.

Rick's passing leaves such a sad, awful void - a void on the Mudcat, a void on the radio and a void everywhere Rick might have been seen or heard, or his influence felt. That covers a lot of territory. We are all poorer for his passing as we are richer for his having been here.

I've been away from Mudcat for a few days, so I missed this news.

Like a few others who've posted here, I never met the man, but knew him through Mudcat. He was a strong, articulate voice. What especially strikes me is the effect of his passing on the MC community. I wish I could live my life so as to influence so many lives as Rick Fielding did. Clearly a very special man. My condolences to Mrs Fielding. And to you all as well, the people who love him.

As for musical sendoffs, how about a quote from Violetta Parra of Chile? (Imagine sung as she sang it, slowly and tenderly.)

I've been on the Cat for a only short time, just over a year, but in that time Rick's posts encouraged and enlightened me so many times over. He always spoke so kindly of everyone, was able to see both sides of the (sometimes fiery) debates around here and share those wise insights with others in a nonjudgmental, nonconfrontational way. That is a rare gift, and one this tired ole world needs VERY badly ....

He helped me make a guitar-buying decision last spring, and I've been so pleased with my new Seagull ever since! A veteran music teacher myself, I recognized him right off the bat as a loving, generous and well-seasoned 'kindred spirit'. His years of experience at (lovingly) training and encouraging young musicians just shone through his posts like the sun! I remember him telling one discouraged guitarist here ... But thumb chords are your FRIENDS!    :-) I really liked that (even though thumb chords just KILL my hand ...)

He never knew this, but faithfully practicing some of the many finger-picking techniques/exercises he so kindly posted on the digitrad here has influenced my style and made me a better player. I never got to meet him in person, but he 'taught' me well, and I am very grateful.

My heartfelt sympathy to his family and to all who knew him well. His passing is a great loss for the Cat ... but I know his influence and kindliness and expertise will live on, in his music, in the digitrad, and in our hearts.

I'm new to this group of folkie nuts, so here's yet more proof of Rick's profound influence - getting me to join. I'm Glen Hornblast, a long-time Toronto folkie. Since Rick's passing, I've run into so many fellow folkies that, like myself, feel the immense loss and sorrow of losing this wonderful human being and musician (although I have a feeling he's still floating around someplace).
Rick gave me tremendous support and encouragement years ago when I was just getting my feet wet as a songwriter. His helpful tips and encouragement probably made me go on when I was ready to quit. There's even a song Rick helped me write - a song which is probably the best song I ever wrote - in the song "Mary", a song about a street person, Rick gave me the last line of the song: "Mary's only crime is being born." Do they have royalties in heaven? Cheaper wings, maybe?
So I just wanted to share with you folks from out of town, how much of a force Rick was in the Toronto folk scene. So many musicians owe their start to this wonderful, generous, humorous song-picker. Just last week I was playing a feature at Toronto's Fat Albert's coffeehouse. In the introduction, I dedicated my "Mary" song to Rick, and mentioned that Rick helped write the last line of the last verse. Lo and behold, just when I got to the last verse, somebody's cellphone went off. Someone finally answered it, but there was no one there. Afterwards, it hit me ... maybe that was Rick? He probably hated cellphones, but I wouldn't put it past him.
To Heather, my best wishes and condolances in dealing with the sorrow. Hopefully, you'll find some comfort in the tremendous and amazing outpouring of love for the man from the entire folk community - not just local but worldwide. All the best, dear Heather.

I just found BBC's fine photos of Rick and some of you Catters exactly 37 posts before this one. How did I overlook those??? I'm left wishing I'd had the energy at the Cleveland meeting of the Folk Alliance, where I met Rick for the first and only time, to really hang out with him. He came running out of the hotel to grab my bag when I arrived with Kate Early and Phil Cooper & Margaret Nelson. Then he hauled it up to my hotel room as he figured in my wheelchair I'd have a hard time getting it up there. We talked for about 20 minutes and I was wiped from the trip from Chicago and had to crash for an hour or so before joining the throng. I've never forgotten his kindness that day. Cleveland was 50 degrees F with no snow for that whole February F.A. conference. I'd be willing to bet that the warm welcome I got from Rick that day had a bunch to do with that mid-winter heat wave.

I'll surely miss his presence here.

Hey Art, take a look at AT THIS ONE. Those are all Mudcatters or their kin. I especially love the smile on Rick and Heathers faces. Wonderful memories of a lunatic day trip. 12 hours driving roundtrip, for a wonderful 3 or 4 hours together. There was not a person in the Jeep that wouldn't have done it all over again.

    Our whole family is deeply saddened by the passing of a cherished friend and incredibly talented artist. Rick was not only a wonderful singer and brilliant and versatile instrumentalist, his eagerness to share his skill and enthusiasm with others made him an extraordinary teacher.
    Sandy and I first met Rick when we were invited to the Woods Music and Dance Camp in Ontario in 1992. We were tremendously impressed by his singing, playing, and his fine song-writing. I remember a particular song circle at which we were profoundly moved by his powerful song, "Voices of Struggle." Sandy decided then and there that he wanted to make a recording of Rick for Folk-Legacy.
    One thing that was very evident at the camp was Rick's willingness to help students of all levels of ability, and to back up other musicians. He could play so many different styles, and was happy to help them all, whatever the genre.
    Rick came down to the States to be with us here in Sharon, and his Folk-Legacy recording, "Lifeline," was then released in 1995. In the process of making the record, we gained not just an important recording artist, but a beloved friend. Over the years there were many more visits and concerts -- and many discussions about life and music and politics. Two outstanding leather carvings adorn the walls of our living room, one being a glorious rendition of our logo, the Green Man. Rick's artistry, his warmth, his humanity, and his goodness have truly blessed our lives.
    Heather, we think of you daily, and hope that it comforts you, somehow, to realize that Rick meant so very much to so many people.

I have been away from the forum for several weeks now due to an at-home computer mishap...it saddens me greatly that on the first day I return to the Mudcat I should find such sad news...

I never met Rick but we did have a number of communiques via PM. He'd write to ask me about a whoe range of things, from holistic nutritional advice for dealing with his cancer, to musical stuff, to gods know what. I remember the first time I saw his name in my mailbox and thinking, "Huh? Rick Fielding writing to little old me?" But of course Rick had no such illusions about himself and the great musician everyone said he was. In my experience, he was always kind, witty and eager to make people feel better than they might that day. I'd have dearly loved to share a song circle with him.

I was always struck (and still am) at how universally loved and respected this man (and his music) has been by so many in this community. Hearing of how all of you shared in his friendship makes me feel closer to a man I wish I'd had the pleasure of knowing in the flesh...so thank you, everyone.

Maybe I'm wrong, I'm only guessing, but I expect there will be a Mudcat gathering on June 5th in Toronto. How many people can this club hold? I could see this gathering going on for more than 6 hours. Hell, Rick wouldn't have left that early.

For the many who may have not read the thread about the European Mudgathering last weekend.

All music was live with one exception on Saturday night: Rick singing 'Handful of songs'. It was a very moving and adequate tribute.

It has been along time since I've been back to Canada, so I've only recently learned of Rick's passing.

I first met Rick when I was, oh, I'd say about 15-years-old, and he made a strong impression on me. He helped engender in me a love of folk ballads, but also influenced the way I see world, past, present and future.

I remain a union man to this day, thanks in part to him and his music. And as I make my way in the world I am often reminded of his songs, and find myself humming his tunes. In fact, as I sit to type I am struck by the fact that a few of the turns of phrase I rely on all these years later were borrowed from him and his tales, which were always well-tuned in the telling.

What a loss. What a man.
