Unfortunately, St. Joe didn't drive the snakes out of Canada. He just arranged to have them frozen for half the year. No wonder he is the patron Saint of Canada. A true Canuck... "Hey, that's good enough for the girls I goes wit'. Let's take a break n' have a wee drop."

We'll be doing our bit on Sunday with our Canadian friends.But as it's St.Patrick's Day today,they are joining us tonight,to go get rat arsed at a "clone Irish pub"here in Paris.Fortunately, there is a large Irish community here.This should take us through Saturday etc!It's going to be a long weekend!

I was told that Canadians didn't like being called Canucks. When I was at camp the American kids found that out, and, of course harassed the Canadians at every opportunity. They responded with, "Stop calling me a Canuck, you yankee!" which got no reaction from kids from Ohio or Pennsylvania. But kids from North Carolina and Georgia had a lot to say about being called a yankee.

Is St. Joseph really the patron saint of Canada? I heard of Canada {mostly from "Canada Dry Gingerale". But I didn't know that Canada had a patron saint.

And-probably since I'm not Catholic, I had never heard of St. Joseph Day. But thanks to the wonder of Google, here's what I found:

"St. Joseph's Day is a Roman Catholic feast day commemorating the life of St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

CELEBRATION
Those with strong religious associations, often those of southern Italian descent, typically celebrate St. Joseph's Day.

Those who visit a St. Joseph's table, often receive gifts of fava beans and breads. Fava beans play an integral part of the celebration because this was the food that saved the Sicilians from starvation. The bean is said to bring good luck, and it is believed that if the St. Joseph's bread is kept in the home, the family will never starve.

HISTORY
During a famine in Sicily, when food was scarce and many people were starving, the poor people had only their faith to rely on. Yes, indeed.

My mom and a friend of hers smoke a joint in the late 1960s. They had never before and when I asked if they'd got off, they both said no.

I asked my brother who was still living at home. He said he didn't know, but it seems the gals (both quite petite) had called St Hubert's and ordered two chickens, large fries, lotsa barbeque sauce, slaw, potato salad and buns. By the time my brother went upstairs to have some chicken all that was left was bones. Nothing else. Go figger.

But I began to see the light as a result of Bruce's post [that sounds better than Peace's post] about his childhood memory. I said to myself "Self, Bruce's last post sure sounds like ordering some Kentucky Fried Chicken [except where I come from at least, we can't "call to order" from Colonel Sanders, we have to order in person and eat it there or take it out].

So I said to myself, "Self, it's time to let the fingers do the walking". So I called up my friend Googles, and asked him {"her"? "it"?} "What is St. Huberts?" And I find out that St Huberts is the name of a restaurant chain that specializes in chicken...

I don't think St. Hubert's is as universal as Kentucky Fried - I think it's pretty much a Quebec phenomenon, is it not? Central/Eastern Canada anyway - Or am I just out of the loop? (I don't get out much).

Your correct thurg ... St. Hubert's is pretty well restricted to Quebec ... they did try making inroads to ontario but it didn't seem to work and the ones I knew closed down .. I live in New Brusnwick, that is 50% English, 50% French so we do have the presence of ST Hubert's here.

BTW ... New Brunswick is the only legal bi-lingual province in Canada (I'm proud to say).

Here's something odd: I went to a catholic grammar school, taught by nuns, and have no memory of physical punishment ever being used except once, when a dude in 4th grade called the nun a "silly old bitch" and she slapped him once and he landed across the room; then she called his father and when dad found out what the kid had done HE slapped him across the room the other direction. No, it wasn't me.

Now, moving on to high school, well, the Christian Brothers were not so tenderhearted. I'll just leave it go at that. Even then, the best of them never had to resort to physical punishment (although I'm sure they were tempted at times).

I saw a lot of knuckles and napes smacked with a pointer in one-half school year when I was nine years old. We were staying with relatives after moving to Moncton and I attended St. Bernard's Catholic School. I was glad when we moved into our own house and I got out of that place. I got the pointer the very first morning... nobody told me that Catechism started at 08:30h and school at 09:00h.

Hmmm... never saw any of the girls get smacked, though. Of course, they are smarter than boys.

Of course, we were perfect angels (the kid who got slapped was from my brother's class). We never, ever shot off firecrackers, left scuff marks on the gym floor, fought, shoved each other on the asphalt playground, slid down the sliding boards head first, brought snakes to school, brought toy guns to school, whittled on the desks, threw up, threw food in the cafeteria, played poker the toilets, smoked on the playground, de-pants other boys, stole beer, or anything like those things. Nope, not us.
