Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: SINSULL Date: 21 Aug 06 - 08:12 PM WHEEEEEE! Last year, some of us put together a Friday night birthday/anniversary/newlywed celebration with cakes and "prizes". Anyone interested in helping put it together this year? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Barry Finn Date: 21 Aug 06 - 08:31 PM This sounds like heaven Charlie, I've only been closer a couple times. "(and 5 miles by boat)" can you actually get there by boat from the sea? I might just have to steal my little brother's power crusier to save on the gas costs. This sounds like a great set up & I'm happy to say that I'll be in great shape to go, thank you. As always use me if you can & as you wish, though that's not the grandest offer you can have what I've got. OK, stop it, enough now & quite making fun me. See you all there. Ohhh, I'm so happy to see this posted. LOL to you & the rest of the committee. Barry |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Aug 06 - 08:38 PM I probably have to give this one a pass as I'll be involved working on some close legislative campaigns and November 7th is Election Day. Rats! Last year was so much fun. I expect a detailed report. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: ranger1 Date: 21 Aug 06 - 08:43 PM Ooh, goody! Saving my pennies now! SINS, I can help with the Friday night bash, especially if I can ride down with you. |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Janie Date: 21 Aug 06 - 09:01 PM Want Tinker, Sinsull, Jacqui and I should do the auction again this year? (I suppose I should ask them before I volunteer them, but--what the hey, eh?) Janie |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Leadfingers Date: 21 Aug 06 - 09:11 PM Sadly the Finances are NOT what they were last year - Despite the excellence of the weekend I really do NOT think I can swing it this year ! DAMMIT !! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Aug 06 - 09:31 PM Travel stoppages here again this year before or after G'way are OK. We're in extreme north central PA where routes 6 & 15 cross between Corning NY and Williamsport PA. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Jeri Date: 21 Aug 06 - 09:58 PM I wish the virtual tour on the camp website worked. (Yes, my javascript is enabled.) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Maryrrf Date: 21 Aug 06 - 10:28 PM Aww Terry you can swing it. The exchange rate's in your favor! It will be a big disappointment if you can't come! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: SINSULL Date: 21 Aug 06 - 10:52 PM Baring my gifts? I think not! Surely you mean "bearing". And don't call me Shirley. I think yes, Tami. I am still working out transportation there and back for multitudes. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 21 Aug 06 - 11:34 PM yep, Barry...you could get there from the ocean, if you can navigate the twists & turns of the Upper Chesapeake....boats are tied up all over the area. I screen-copied some pics of the area and posted them on to my site. Take a look (big file..600,000 bytes) The camp is right in the middle, above "Georges Lane" (F-11 on your browser may give you a full screen view) Here is a closer shot Closer yet The buildings are near the water, the cabins are in the trees at left. The L-shaped building is the main meeting area, with the dining hall to its left. Here is the link to the area for those who can use the map 'live' (This is that DaylightMap site...Google Maps can probably get you the same basic view) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 21 Aug 06 - 11:39 PM Oh, Jeri...it is Java, not javascript, but my browser(s) don't get it either...it says "applet not found" |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Charlie Baum Date: 22 Aug 06 - 01:31 AM One CAN arrive by boat at West River. I think the last time that happened at a Getaway may have been when Gordon Bok navigated his boat to Camp Letts (so I;m told). If anyone is serious about this, I can check with the camp about anchorages. --Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Midchuck Date: 22 Aug 06 - 08:56 AM I have been bugged for several years that the Getaway is just far enough away that it's not feasible for us to go during the school year. This year, it doesn't much matter, since: A) It conflicts with NOMAD, where we have a couple of sets, and B) Although I'm perfectly capable of enjoying myself without drinking, I'm an adult, and have been for quite a while, and I get grumpy when someone else presumes to tell me whether I can drink or not, and he/she isn't my doctor. I ain't no Methodist. I don't even know what method they're talking about. Peter |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: John MacKenzie Date: 22 Aug 06 - 09:03 AM Do you think my 19' boat will make it? I shall be there again this year god willing [and Al Qaeda], won't be climbing into none of them top bunks though, no matter who's in it. I still fancy hiring an RV for the weekend, but it's so expensive. Giok |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: MMario Date: 22 Aug 06 - 09:06 AM Any idea on the sturdiness of those top bunks? While I have no problem with top bunks - they usually have a problem with me - or at least my bulk. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: artbrooks Date: 22 Aug 06 - 09:45 AM As I read it, we get $40 off (for the two of us) if we belong to FSGW...which costs $43 for a family membership. We don't mind supporting the organization, although it is unlikely that we'll get to many events (since we are in New Mexico). Can we enclose the membership with the registration or do they have to go to two different places? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: DeanC Date: 22 Aug 06 - 10:32 AM You can send the membership form and fee along with your registration to me (Dean Clamons). I'll take care of getting everything to the right place. Dean |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: MMario Date: 22 Aug 06 - 10:49 AM Thanks Dean, for the information. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Charlie Baum Date: 22 Aug 06 - 11:12 AM Thanks Dean. If anyone wants to print out a membership form to include with your Getaway registration, go to http://ceimd.com/php/public.php?Org=fsgw&ProgramID=1&NoTitle=1&NoCats=1 and print away. --Charlie |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 22 Aug 06 - 11:19 AM (just for historical accuracy, Dave Laning sailed to the Getaway at Camp Letts once or twice....of course, he lived just down the bay aways) (MidChuck...I know what you mean, but of the 40 years of the Getaway, only the previous 5 were at a camp that officially allowed alcohol)...we have always just coped as best we could..) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Charlie Baum Date: 22 Aug 06 - 11:23 AM MMario (and others who worry about bulk)- The bunks seemed very sturdy when we took a tour last year. If you can clamber up the ladders (built in at the ends of most of the bunks), it should hold you. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Ferrara Date: 22 Aug 06 - 12:52 PM Also, Joel Greer and Annie Storr and their young kids arrived once at Camp Letts by sailboat. I remember well, because they took Darriel and me out for a sail. Somewhere I still have some photos.... Other great fringe benefits at Camp Letts were canoeing (we once had a kayaking workshop if I remember correctly, taught by Carter Hearn and Ursy Potter) and horseback riding. Alas, Camp Letts revamped itself into a "conference center" and doubled the rents. Sigh.... |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Ferrara Date: 22 Aug 06 - 12:59 PM Janie, Jacqui, Tinker and Sinsull, we would LOVE to have you handle the Silent Auction again this year. You all did a fine job last year and the response was terrific. Thank you for offering to help. It's quite a job. Rita (and Carly, and Nancy, and Charlie, and all the folks who have handled the Silent Auction job and know how much it involves....) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Crane Driver Date: 22 Aug 06 - 06:22 PM Well, we've been and gone and done it - we've booked the flights. So we'll have to go now. Looking forward to seeing you all again. Andrew & Carole. PS We're hoping to bring some wedding cake over, but it's got brandy in it - will we have to smuggle it into the camp? A&C |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: SINSULL Date: 22 Aug 06 - 06:29 PM I have a lovely wedding gift for you and Carole. heh heh |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 22 Aug 06 - 07:01 PM no need to smuggle in the cake...I'll meet you in the parking lot and eat it there...*smile* (and can no doubt recruit volunteers to help!) |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Janie Date: 23 Aug 06 - 03:59 PM Are the cabin lounges big enough to accomodate a nice sized group of people gathered to sing? Janie |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 23 Aug 06 - 04:23 PM Yes, Janie, they are. In fact, one or two of them will no doubt be designated venues for workshops. They're not HUGE spaces, but big enough to do the trick. They are furnished with, as I recall, couches and armchairs, but there are folding chairs readily available in each building (or so we were told), and should be just fine. The Retreat Center building has, in addition to a large open room (which will serve nicely for registration and silent auction and craft-and-CD sales) and a small kitchen, a large lounge which will be an excellent space for large workshops. All in all, I think it will do very well. Just a little over two months to go! Nancy |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Catherine Jayne Date: 23 Aug 06 - 04:56 PM Micca and I will be there again this year! We've had our flights booked since February!! Looking forward to seeing you all again Love Khatt xxx |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Barry Finn Date: 23 Aug 06 - 05:36 PM Does the camp reqiure that their own staff be used in the kitchen? Barry |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 06 - 06:08 PM Yes...at least for now, Barry. It is a rare camp which will trust strangers to rustle around its kitchen. (We managed at old Camp Letts, but they watched us like hawks the first couple years, and then when we had Debbie McClatchy run the food, they eased off a bit after they saw she could do it....this kitchen is a bit tight and they are not likely to let us use it..) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Bill D Date: 23 Aug 06 - 06:14 PM (there IS a small 'kitchen' area in the dorm/meeting building that we can do a bit with...kind of like you see in the backs of churches...counters, coffee area, etc....we may use that for Friday night snack and such. This is 1st year here, and we need to study how it can work best) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: MMario Date: 24 Aug 06 - 08:36 AM regarding the kitchen staff - if the laws are anything like they are in NYS the camp may not have the OPTION of letting you use the kitchen. I was involved with a summer camp for many years - week long residential camp - and we did out ouwn cooking - but when we had to swap locations we were informed that was ONLY because we had been "grandfathered" in - and in the new location we MUST use the staff provided by the camp - or *THEY* would not be able to get their health permit. (and no, the state wouldn't let us apply for our own permit) |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Fortunato Date: 25 Aug 06 - 02:29 PM I'm thinking of having the annual Thursday, pre-getaway sing around at my house again this year. Anyone interested? cheers chance |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: beardedbruce Date: 25 Aug 06 - 02:47 PM Count me in- even if I have to work during the Getaway! ( Launch 19 Sept, minimum 30 days LEO checkout. But Australia NEEDS 24 more TV channels...) What does it look like for bringing instruments for those from overseas? Do we ( locals ) need to set up an instrument "Loan ranger", to make sure everyone has the needed musicmaker? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: beardedbruce Date: 25 Aug 06 - 03:07 PM or should that be a "Loan Arranger"? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Maryrrf Date: 25 Aug 06 - 03:51 PM I can bring an extra banjo, appalachian dulcimer, and guitar if any overseas folks need to borrow. Also, if anybody is heading south after (or passing through before, for that matter) the Getaway they can have bed and board at my place, in Mechanicsville, Virginia (just outside of Richmond). Thats about 2 and a half to 3 hours from the Getaway location, I think. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Crane Driver Date: 25 Aug 06 - 05:15 PM Well of course, if someone in the area happens to have a Crane system duet concertina I could borrow for the weekend, that might solve a few flight problems - but I reckon I'd be better off bringing my own. Of course, it's a lot smaller than most instruments, so I don't think I'll have problems bringing it as a carry-on, even now. Bet I get asked to play it at the airport again though - just to prove it really is an instrument. Andrew |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: artbrooks Date: 25 Aug 06 - 07:00 PM If we drive, we can bring an extra guitar, a lap dulcimer and any number of bodhrans. On the other hand, we'll be on the other side of the equation if we fly. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Fortunato Date: 26 Aug 06 - 01:07 PM Ok Bearded Bruce, that's one for the PreGetaway Singaround chez Fortunato. cheers, chance |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Charley Noble Date: 27 Aug 06 - 10:47 AM Andrew- It takes courage to bring a concertina through airline check-out nowadays. I remember recently how pale the security attendant looked when she saw the image on the screen of all those wires in my little innocent Anglo. Eventually I convinced her that while some might consider it an instrument of torture that it was designed as a musical instrument. Good luck! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 From: Fortunato Date: 27 Aug 06 - 06:34 PM PreGetaway Singaround chez Fortunato: I think we can count the beautiful and yet talented wife of my fuzzy buddy Micca, and himself as well, for the Singaround. |
