Every now and again I come across some remark in a Mudcat thread that is really a prime candidate for a Gallery of Mudcat Quotations. I don't mean the quotes we dig out from what other people have said in order to make a point - though that would be an interesting colection too. I mean when some Mudcat member comes up with something worth remembering and quoting.

But we don't have such a collection at this point that I know of. Perhaps there have been previous threads like this, but I've never seen one. So I think we should have one.

Anyway, here is one to start with, taken from this thread talking about gossip concerning politicians' private lives. It's by by Rapaire:

"Course, if I wanted to find out about my own life I'd run for political office."

Any more, current or not so current?

I think the ground rules for this should be that people bring quotations made by other Mudcatters, and that they always stick in a clicky to the original thread - that way they point us back to good threads in the process, and maybe help us raise our game.

Just a note, some of us write for what passes as a living, well, hopefully:-)...since posting these many years on Mudcat, a lot of my stuff has been copyrighted. I don't mind it being here, obviously (it'd be too bad if I did) but I wouldn't want it used elsewhere without permission. Thanks for understanding.:-)

I like the idea of quotes by Mudcatters from the outside world as well. Where quotes come from inside the Mudcat sticking in a link to the thread seems a good idea. Maybe good quotes come from good threads.

Here's a gem I found from that thread with the rick fielding quote that Allan C. gave above. Also by Rick - not so much a quote as a useful tip, and interesting insight: "I've squeezed Crazy Glue into more than one Juke Box in bars where I was playing. It worked. In each place they had to remove the machine to fix it."

I worked at a bar in Sheffield, a loud rock disco with live bands, whilst supporting myself through university as a mature student. Matchsticks down the slot of a Space Invaders (well it was 1979) did as well as super glue and no chance of sticking your fingers together!!

Jayzus, McGrath, you've started the solution to all foreseeable financial woes attributable to the 'Cat. Max can surely get out of the hole with this. It fits right in with my understanding of people and what makes them tick. All to do with locus of control and what I refer to as the "Days of Our Lives" syndrome - people who view life as if it were a soapie on tv and say "Why are they doing that?" & "Why don't they do this?" but never seem to see it as their role to take some responsibility for what happens in the world around them.

Due to them being personal - perhaps it is as well that the use of personal messages, without the prior agreement of the poster, (no matter how good the quote) is not encouraged in this thread?

Yes. That is why I thought long and hard before answering you here. For if you look you will see that it was you that continued this argument here........and started the wordplay you refer to. I would still be interested in a sensible answer to my question (perhaps in a PM).

Wordplay indeed. In any context open and closed are opposites, please don't expect me to ever walk through a door that you assure me is open. In this context open means you can continue to contribute to a thread and closed means that you cannot - in our universe anyway - things may be different in Harlow.

As indeed I have found they are. I have never forgotten the flashing lights and alarms that I set off in the library there, when I mistakenly picked up the same book that I had just returned. Perhaps the library was not open? It was certainly soon closed....With me still in it!
