Subject: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Mar 04 - 05:01 PM Every now and again I come across some remark in a Mudcat thread that is really a prime candidate for a Gallery of Mudcat Quotations. I don't mean the quotes we dig out from what other people have said in order to make a point - though that would be an interesting colection too. I mean when some Mudcat member comes up with something worth remembering and quoting. But we don't have such a collection at this point that I know of. Perhaps there have been previous threads like this, but I've never seen one. So I think we should have one. Anyway, here is one to start with, taken from this thread talking about gossip concerning politicians' private lives. It's by by Rapaire: "Course, if I wanted to find out about my own life I'd run for political office." Any more, current or not so current? |

Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Mar 04 - 06:51 PM Good ones. I'd missed them too. Thanks Allan. I'm looking forward to seeing what other unconsidered diamonds people come up with. Here's another: "If you're honest with the song it will do its magic."" That is from Harvey Andrews in this thread. I think the ground rules for this should be that people bring quotations made by other Mudcatters, and that they always stick in a clicky to the original thread - that way they point us back to good threads in the process, and maybe help us raise our game. |

Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: UB Ed Date: 30 Mar 04 - 11:39 PM "Ya know, I had a cat with bowel problems and my vet suggested a 1/2 teaspoon of gasoline fer chrissake! I admit that I thought the guy was nuts, but it did work, sorta. It ain't too easy to get a half teaspoon of gasoline down a cat's throat, but when I did, he liked to tore me to shreds getting away. He blasted around the room about 3 or 4 times, ran up the hallway, up the stairs, back down both, and into the den, leaped on the drapes and ran to the end of the curtain rod where he stopped and fell to the floor. I thought I'd killed the poor thing, but it turns out he'd just run out of gas." Catspaw49 |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: katlaughing Date: 31 Mar 04 - 01:29 AM Thanks, Allan! I'd forgotten about that thread. Just a note, some of us write for what passes as a living, well, hopefully:-)...since posting these many years on Mudcat, a lot of my stuff has been copyrighted. I don't mind it being here, obviously (it'd be too bad if I did) but I wouldn't want it used elsewhere without permission. Thanks for understanding.:-)kat |

Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Snuffy Date: 31 Mar 04 - 08:13 AM Not in any thread, but at the Shellbacks winter gathering this month, Mrs Duck came out with: "If God had meant me to be slim, he wouldn't have made me an atheist" |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Mar 04 - 03:41 PM Mrs Duck. God knew what he was doing! I like the idea of quotes by Mudcatters from the outside world as well. Where quotes come from inside the Mudcat sticking in a link to the thread seems a good idea. Maybe good quotes come from good threads. Here's a gem I found from that thread with the rick fielding quote that Allan C. gave above. Also by Rick - not so much a quote as a useful tip, and interesting insight: "I've squeezed Crazy Glue into more than one Juke Box in bars where I was playing. It worked. In each place they had to remove the machine to fix it." |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Folkiedave Date: 31 Mar 04 - 06:32 PM I worked at a bar in Sheffield, a loud rock disco with live bands, whilst supporting myself through university as a mature student. Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 31 Mar 04 - 08:02 PM And here's another, which set me thinking there ought to be a place to gather Mudcat Quotations. Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Amos Date: 01 Apr 04 - 01:25 AM Now you're doomed to trace back the threads, one day at a time, looking for bon mots. I know I left a real gem back there somewhere but it woubn't do me any good to find it! :>) A |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: alanabit Date: 01 Apr 04 - 01:41 PM I heard a lovely one today from the veteran busker Mississippi Mike. I hadn't seen him for some time and was explaining why my left arm is currently in a cast. "I should know better than to fool around doing karate at my age," I joked. "Yeah. You're never too old to do something stupid, I guess," came the reply. I'll keep that in mind as the aging process advances! |

Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: wysiwyg Date: 04 Apr 04 - 12:08 AM It started when one of the party goers opened a bottle of very fine tequila and persuaded us to do a few shots with him. It was smooth stuff with a capital smoo. Examples of potential usage: "She was a smooth talker, with a capital smoo." "Was he a smooth dancer?" "Smooth?!? I'll say, and with a capital smoo!" Gee I hope he made it up himself, smoothie that he is, and I've SEEN his smoo for myself, and it IS capital! ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Helen Date: 04 Apr 04 - 06:21 AM The latest one I copied and thought about putting on the scrolling-text screensaver. Good one, Kendall! Subject: BS: two types of people in the world From: kendall - PM Date: 27 Mar 04 - 08:17 AM there are three kinds: 1 Those who make things happen. 2 Those who let things happen 3 Those who wonder what the hell happened. It fits right in with my understanding of people and what makes them tick. All to do with locus of control and what I refer to as the "Days of Our Lives" syndrome - people who view life as if it were a soapie on tv and say "Why are they doing that?" & "Why don't they do this?" but never seem to see it as their role to take some responsibility for what happens in the world around them. Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: The Shambles Date: 24 Aug 04 - 10:03 AM This one rather needs rescuing, as since making the quote (some time ago) – Joe has tried to close the thread in which it was made, once and has just closed it again for a second time (and final time). However, I will always treasure this (along with many other nice things said to me there). Goodbye, Roger. I hope you come back. Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: greg stephens Date: 24 Aug 04 - 11:24 AM Almost anything by Sir JOhn from Hull should be anthologised. I select the most recent thing of his I've read, it captures the inimitable style beautifully. It was the start of a personal message I got this morning, in reply to one of mine posted at abou 7AM. "Hu Gred You up earkly" and continued in the same vein. |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: The Shambles Date: 24 Aug 04 - 11:47 AM Due to them being personal - perhaps it is as well that the use of personal messages, without the prior agreement of the poster, (no matter how good the quote) is not encouraged in this thread? I also have one or two PMs from this source, however, I would not post these publicly, even with permission............*smiles* Just because a thread is closed it doesn't mean it can't be opened. Sorry to continue in this pedantic manner but - why then close the thread in the first place? |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Jim Dixon Date: 24 Aug 04 - 03:35 PM I'm afraid I'm the one who said "In every thread, SOMEONE has to be last" but it was NOT my idea to start those stupid threads. |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 Aug 04 - 03:53 PM Wordplay, Shambles - possible here because "closed" and "opened" in this context are not opposites or mutually exclusive. (But wouldn't it be a good idea to keep this one thread specifically for things said on the Mudcat which appear quotable, rather than to carry over arguments from other threads?) |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: Big Al Whittle Date: 24 Aug 04 - 04:20 PM Just read this one today, which is just so much better than anything I am going to hear today on TV, radio or read in the newspapers. Yes. That is why I thought long and hard before answering you here. For if you look you will see that it was you that continued this argument here........and started the wordplay you refer to. I would still be interested in a sensible answer to my question (perhaps in a PM). But comments here could also appear to be quotable gems - such as - possible here because "closed" and "opened" in this context are not opposites or mutually exclusive. Wordplay indeed. In any context open and closed are opposites, please don't expect me to ever walk through a door that you assure me is open. In this context open means you can continue to contribute to a thread and closed means that you cannot - in our universe anyway - things may be different in Harlow. As indeed I have found they are. I have never forgotten the flashing lights and alarms that I set off in the library there, when I mistakenly picked up the same book that I had just returned. Perhaps the library was not open? It was certainly soon closed....With me still in it! |
Subject: RE: Gallery of Mudcat Quotations From: greg stephens Date: 24 Aug 04 - 06:39 PM Rhe Shambles: yes I have got Sir JOhn from Hull's permission to quote from his Mudcat PM. Please let's keep this thread to confined to quotations we have loved and wish to share with others. |
