Hi I was wondering if anyone has seen a good tin whistle tutor on video. I had one on cassette tape but was having dificulty understanding how to play some of the ornamentation, such as rolls etc. I figure it might be easier to learn how to do it if I could actually see what the player is doing. Alternatively maybe one of our good Mudcat people could explain how to finger some of these tricky arrangements.

Hi Den,

Sorry no video advice but here is a good link Tin whistle tutor on-line

I assume it's the ornamentation (twiddly bits) you're having trouble with, that site does them pretty well. There are plenty of whistlers here...... feel free to ask away and we'll try to help.

Thanks Alison, I checked out the site and there was a lot of good stuff on there but I'm afraid still the same problem. You see I don't read music at all, I play everything by ear. I know there is some really good advice on the site, I guess its just me I just need to see how to play the ornamentation before actually trying it. Are you the Alison from Belfast? A long time ago I posted a message trying to find out if anyone new the words to The old Woman from Belfast and you (if you are the that person) were keen to know the song. I think way back then when someone kindly posted the words I neglected to post the tune. If you are the same Alison then the tune is the same as the Juice of the Barley. I know it was a long time ago but I have three young boys and my life is not my own any more.

Den,

I'm fairly certain that a catalogue of folk stuff has a tin whistle tutor on video but before I go hunting around for it - it will be in PAL video format, not NTSC, becasue PAL is the standard format in Australia. Can you only use NTSC format?

Helen, in Oz

Hi Den,

Yes I'm the same alison (originally Belfast, now OZ), and thanks for the tune.. that thread reappeared again a few months back. You could try Chiff and Fipple they have most things to do with whistles.. maybe could point you in the direction of a video.
