I have been enjoying the "favorite Tinwhistles" thread so much that I thought i would start this new one and see what we get. (and lets not showoff and just name a bunch of finger-benders.:-)

Lannigan's ball. Atholl highlanders.

I have 3 hornpipes (which I heard James Galway do once) which go down a treat:-

He collectively called them the "Belfast Hornpipe". They are:-

boys from the bluehill, Harvest home, Belfast hornpipe.

Played at speed, can bring the house down.

nice tunes.....I am not familiar with all of them. Do you know of any online midis of them?
Alison .....I love Lannigan's Ball. I have heard a vocal version (I can't name the artists) that is played with a slower ....loping rhythm. It is a duet, Male and female. I just love it , very fun tune. We play it heavily swung. My wife plays Atholl Highlanders on the pipes(nice tune), I haven' tried it. I like "....bluehill", I don't know the others.

I am not familiar with "Early one morning," either...I think i will look for MIDIs for all the tunes that get listed here and post them as links for everybody.

I love to play "The Star of the County Down" or "The Foggy Dew". I was jamming with a couple of friends the other night and one of them started to play the guitar and sing "A Frog Went A Courtin'". I played along on the whistle. It really sounded neat and was a lot of fun. I play a lot of other instruments, but the whistles really add a lot to a group no matter what the song is.

You know a real mindbender to play on a whistle with all the slide notes? Black is the Color of My True Love's hair.
Course I like green salsa on my falafel, too.
And out of all those O'carolan tunes, right now I like Blind Mary best.
And Morgan Megan
Or is it Megan Morgan?
Someday when I'm really good I'll be able to play Wise Maid, and Drowsy Maggie up to speed.

How about "Dennis Murphy's Hornpipe"? I gave up halfway through trying to learn it, but I'll get back to it sometime. Also the only two I've performed in public: "Cumberland Reel" and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More" (on a C whistle). And for fellow beginners, "Amazing Grace" and "Simple Gifts" are easy to play and sound nice.

My fav song for tin whistle is "Brian Boru's March" I have no idea how difficult it is in comparison. I sort of just bought a whistle on a whim at Ligonier Highland Games and have been picking up music here and there. Another good one is "MacPherson's Farwell" (or something along those lines). Also "Bold Fenian Men"

Are you Familiar with "Bonny Portmore?" It goes great with "The Clay Of Cill Creagan." (I really like that tune, also.)
I am not familiar with those last two slow airs.
I would really like to be able to post links to all of the tunes listed , but I am not having any luck finding them on-line.If anyone has gif files (or MIDIs) of these tunes I would be glad to post them at my web site if there is interest.....Then I will post links to the tunes on this thread.

Just got in on this thread. Having whistled for some time now; on the set mentioned by Alison "The Hornpipe Set" my band has done in this compilation -- Home Rule / Harvest Home/ Boys from Bluehill and then for the tag try doing all three simultaniously ( sp? ) What a thrill ride. Try this and I won't be held responsible!!!

I'd have to say that my favorite whistle tune would have to be "Banish Misfortune".

Question: For "The Butterfly", what key do you play it in on the whistle? I worked it out by ear on the flute, but that goes below the whistle range.

On the C whistle, the first note is A; on the D whistle, B. I think that gives you enough room for the low notes. Try it.

Great tunes. Barbara has been helping out by making MIDIs of a few of them. I should have a page of MIDIs of them by Sunday afternoon.....
Remember, we want to know what your favorites are to play. They don't need to be traditional, or old, or difficult to play....the only criterion is that they make you happy just playing them.

Maybe some of us will learn them and enjoy them the way you do.
