Subject: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Jan 02 - 01:46 AM This is actually for my sister, bet, whose computer is confuzzled, right now. I had not heard of Music Minus One until she told me about it, tonight. She has just started pennywhistle lessons, in a group thing at the community college and when her teacher said he couldn't find MMO for pennywhistle and wished he could, she said, "I'll bet I know of some folks who will know where to find it!" SO...how about it Mudcatters? Do ye ken sich a t'ing? BTW, she found out, at class, that our uncle's pennywhistle, which she was given, is the real deal, all the way from Ireland, and is thrilled! Thanks, very much! kat |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Jan 02 - 01:56 AM I should have clarified: MMO seems to be mostly for classical and some popular. What they are wondering is if there is such a thing for trad music, specifically for the pennywhistle. Thanks! |

Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: katlaughing Date: 15 Jan 02 - 03:42 AM Paul, that is it exactly! Thank you so much. I've sent the link on to my sister. I know she will really appreciate it. That is a neat site! Thanks! kat |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: bet Date: 15 Jan 02 - 09:23 AM Any other ideas out there? As I understand it Teaach Yourself the Pennywhistle comes witha CD but includes the pennywhistle playing. He is looking for one the omits the pennywhistle, you add it. Thanks Paul. bet |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: Sorcha Date: 15 Jan 02 - 09:35 AM Not specifically for whistle, but there is Slowplayers and Virtual Session |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: GUEST,PaulM Date: 15 Jan 02 - 09:42 AM bet, The CD with Teach Yourself Pennywhistle is stereo. The whistle is on one channel and the backing on the other, so you can decide which part(s) you want to hear. Paul |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: GUEST,Coyote Breath Date: 15 Jan 02 - 11:20 AM It can get pretty hectic trying this but on occasion I am so moved by something Celtic I am listening to I grab whatever pennywhistle is in the right key (or its harmonic equivalent) and start playing along. It can be pretty humbling at times but once in a while I get in the groove and I think I have learned something from all this, especially breathing properly and 'bending' notes. I will not yet play PW in public but do take it on backpack trips in the desert (which are always solo) and entertain the coyotes in the evening. Seems like this could be a good way to learn should the other excellent methods mentioned above not work out. CB |

Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: Dave Bryant Date: 15 Jan 02 - 12:19 PM There are plenty of Folk Music MIDI files on the net. All you need is a simple MIDI editor (I've got a great old 16-bit one called MIDI SESSION) and you can revoice them to any combination you like, minus the part you want to play yourself (although you might want to leave it in at lower volume). You can also change the speed and even the key to suit. With suitable software (I recommend WAVMAKER III) you can render MIDI files into (RAW)WAV files and with a CDR create an audio CD. Linda and I are using exactly that technique for Music Hall backing tracks as neither of us is a pianist. |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: wysiwyg Date: 15 Jan 02 - 12:23 PM When I want to learn a complicated melody I whistle it along (mouth) with the recording nice and loud and as I get more confident of the notes I just turn the recording down until I can turn it off entirely. The Old Time Music Archive's fiddle tunes work well for this. Can't those be penny-whistled too? The MIDI's can be grabbed off it as well. THIS THREAD has a link to the Archive, and some discussion that might be applied to whistle. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Help: Music Minus One for Pennywhistle?? From: bet Date: 15 Jan 02 - 03:00 PM Thanks Dave and Susan. I'll share this info. I'm working on getting a midi set up right now Dave. If you knew me, that's a BIG deal. Maybe this will give me more incentive to get it working. Tonight I'm headed out to buy the interfacing. I hope the guy in the store know what I want. Anyway, Thanks! bet |
