Here are some thoughts that have come up in response to various people's e-mails.

Volunteer duty: Sign-up sheet at the registration desk. You pick the times when you'll do kitchen work and/or other volunteer duty. All adults *must* do two 1-hour stints in the kitchen. The usual practice is to look at the schedule of events for the weekend; ponder how late you're likely to stay up singing each night; decide which events you can't bear to miss; and choose a slot from the ones that are left that will cause as little pain as possible in terms of missing stuff. Many people also look to sign up in a slot that already has someone they know. Depending on how busy things are in the kitchen, you may find yourselfs singing veggie-chopping shanties....

I'll get out a preliminary version of the program sometime in September, maybe more than one, so people can start thinking about which workshops they want to participate in, what songs they want to do for each one, etc. The final program and schedule has to wait until enough registrations are in for me to know who's available to lead workshops and/or give concerts.

We have certain standard workshops that people would really miss if they didn't appear, such as a long C&W jam, sea songs, drinking songs, Sunday morning Gospel, Sacred Harp music, etc.

I think we'll try to have a Mudcatter concert, just 30 minutes or so, maybe more if enough people are interested. (Actually, since I wrote that I'm now thinking more in terms of two Mudcat concerts, one each morning for about an hour. There are an awful lot of us, including all the FSGW people.)

It would be listed as a concert, but really it would be a sing-around. The thing is, I'd like the non-performing Mudcatters to think about their repertoire. I bet everybody would find at least one piece that all their friends like to hear them play or sing, and they know it well enough to do it well no matter how nervous they are. For the folks who don't usually perform in front of strangers, maybe we can convince them on the grounds that (a) they're going to do a song they know really really well and (b) these aren't strangers, they're Mudcatters and (c) this isn't a performance, it's a way to get acquainted.

If you lead a workshop or mini-concert, expect a lot of coming and going. People are usually very quiet and respectful of whoever's performing, but they do tend to wander from workshop to workshop (it's hard to taste only one dish at a potluck, so to speak.) Don't feel there's something wrong or that it's a negative response to your concert or workshop. It's normal.

I think of these bits of wisdom as I e-mail specific individuals, but I need to post some of them to the Getaway thread for everybody who's coming. - R

This does look wonderful.

I get to organize the workshops and mini-concerts this year. I want to set up a session of "Music from the Mudcat Cafe." It can be anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half, with each person/ group doing one, two or three songs. (Or it could be a song circle that's open to any of the Mudcatters who attend. Non-mudcatters can join in the choruses.)

How about e-mailing me if (a) you're too shy and definitely don't want to be included or (b) you'd really like to be in this session if it doesn't conflict with anything you care about or (c) wild horses couldn't keep you away.

An all-Mudcat session would introduce some of the Mudcatters to the other attendees and vice versa; make people more aware of the contribution the Mudcat is making to the fun this year; and give us 'Catters a chance to hear each other sing.

If you're coming, even if you don't want to lead a workshop or anything, how about sending me your e-mail address. Also, anyone who has a special interest such as union songs or Irish music or Civil War stuff etc, just mention it & tell me if you'd feel most comfortable singing along, or maybe leading a workshop. RE: rooming--If people request, we could try to put mudcatters in the same cabins or cabin areas. If there is anyone in particular you'd like to room with, note it on your registration form. We pretty well know who the mudcatters are anyway. But it won't matter too much--you'll probably be in the dining hall or one of the lodges jamming or singing or schmoozing, and only retire to your cabin when you're too tired to be sociable.

Barry--I'd guess the drive from Boston is 8 to 9 hours, depending on how fast you drive and how often you stop. That time includes time for refueling and pit stops, but not meals. And of course, any part of that time spent driving at rush hour(s) can add up to an extra hour or two. And from Bston to DC, you've got cities a-plenty with potential rush hours. The last one--from DC South to Prince William, can be a real doozy on a Friday afternoon, but if you've got three people in your vehicle, you can get on the HOV (High-Occupancy-Vehicle) express lanes and zip past most of the traffic jams.

There are several routings you could use from Boston to DC; some are slightly longer but avoid the bugger cities of Bos-NY-Wash.

Also another driving hint for those driving in from New England, New York , or New Jersey: When I-95 hits the I-495 Beltway around DC, you can go EITHER WAY around DC: clockwise or widdershins--it's equidistant!

I'll be there this year. If the rest of the family's coming we'll fly if not I'll coming over the road singing "I can drive my rig all night, there ain't been a cop in sight, 3 nights with you all it's gonna be my heart's delight" (sounds like I took it from '6 days On the Road'). Anyone know the ETA from Boston to DC. Last time I drove that way I made it to Nashville in one long spurt but that was near 20 yrs ago & I'm not that youg anymore, maybe I'll just fly reguardless

Joe, I hope you'll be learning some of those shanties, I'll be looking to be backing you up one thing or another.

nawww...no one would DARE put all Mudcatters together..*grin*...no one would get any sleep!..

but..I suspect certain arrangements can be made..(people used to ask for bunks together, and it generally worked out)

'most' cabins are a three room deal, with a small room in the center that has 2 beds, and large rooms on each end with 4 beds in each room. there are also some other strange buildings with different arrangements, but too hard to explain here...cabins are also varying distances from 'home' (i.e., dining hall)..so those who wish quiet generally are further out..do bring your flashlights!

It will take a few more days before I have final information available for post on the www.fsgw.org site. I've got to prepare the hardcopy version first (for the FSGW newsletter, which goes to the printer later this week). As soon as that's done, I'll prepare a version for the web site. So expect materials in a week or so, G-d willing and the creek don't rise and the electric don't fail.

Cabin space will be plentiful. Not to worry.

As of now, the rates for the entire weekend (Friday afternoon through Monday morning) are $95/$85 for adults and $50/$40 for children 4 through 11 years old. (The second figure is for members of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, and if you want the member discount, along with all the other advantages of membership, there will be a link on the registration to a membership form as well.) The rates for Friday through Sunday evening (as late as you care to jam) are $90/$80 for adults and $45/$35 for children 4 to 11. All children 3 and younger are free.

Rates include use of the park, cabin bed space, and food by Debby McClatchy, caterer extraordinaire: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and midnight snack for Saturday and Sunday. The all-weekend rate also includes Sunday overnight cabin space and breakfast on Monday. Friday dinner will be a potluck.

There will also be a rate for "daytrippers" (includes lunch and dinner ONLY) at $35/$30/day for adults and $20/$15 for children 4-11. And even cheaper rates for those who don't want to eat with us.

For those wishing to bring an RV, if you just park it in the parking lot, the costs are the same as for campers with bedspace. If you need plug ins, there's an RV Camper village one mile away, at the entrance to the gravel road that leads to the camp. You'll have to check with them for additional costs.

For those who wish more luxurious accommodations, rooms will be available at a nearby budget motel (5 miles away) for $48/night/room.

Hope you're all willing to work: we ask everyone to put in a couple of hours doing things, primarily in the kitchen: food stowage, preparation, chopping, cooking, serving, clean-up, etc. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room where a lot of the music/jamming goes on, so you won't feel isolated even while you're working. In fact, the group singing in the kitchen is some of the best music. (Anyone have a vegetable chopping shanty?)

So--I'm off to do the hardcopy thing; I'll post in this thread when the web-version is up and running.

Hey, why don't all of you who are sitting on the fence about this try to get airline tickets right now at the cheap rates? (I believe the sale is only for cities served by Southwest Airlines.) If for some reason we can't get into the Getaway, we can have our own Mudcat gathering - but I suspect we should be able to get into the Getaway.
Looks like the closest airport to the Getaway that Southwest serves is Baltimore. Click here to get to the Southwest reservations page to see what cities the airline serves. You may be able to get a matching fare at other airlines, like I did with United. The fare is $198 round-trip, plus tax, anywhere served by Southwest, for flights between August 16 and December 6 - tickets have to be purchased by July 28. such a deal!

Hey, when are the details and application for the Getaway going to be ready? I just bought my airline tickets because the fares are so cheap, what with airlines matching prices from Southwest Airlines. I got a round-trip from Sacramento to Baltimore for $218.10. I hope the Powers That Be at the Getaway will have pity on me and make sure I get a reservation. I don't know how long these airline sale prices will last. I'm arriving in Baltimore Thursday, October 7. Anybody who wants to ride with me from Baltimore is welcome. We can figure out lodging somewhere between Baltimore and Virginia - 'tain't far.

Moonchild will definitely be in attendance this year and Dumfries is actually quite a bit closer than Edgewater MD by way of Tallahassee. Had to miss last year due to my grandmother's passing and felt I had missed something special. But, as a believer that all things happen for a reason ... Bill D. and Ferrara: Please forgive me for not getting in touch which I was in the D.C. area ... received traumatic scare just after I arrived in D.C. which resulted in an even more traumatic breast cancer scare, so I returned home early. All is okay, but it was like having mortality slap me in the face and knowing life would never again be as it was. Dunno, Mick. I think you may win on this one. Alison seems to be inordinately impressed by singers of songs. I know lots of songs, but if they aren't campfire songs, I know only the first verse and end up getting out my reading glasses to peer at the fine print in the hated Blue Bible (Rise Up Singing). My Steve Martin lookalike good looks and stunning vocal ability and charming personality (and remarkable humility) may not be enough. I can't remember the lyrics without a book, and I can't play an instrument.

Bill D & Ferrara--we've got the same site some of us were at for Carly's party this May!

Susan-Marie--we've got several nurses who usually come. We've also got Alice Bailes (not sure if she still uses that last name), who is quite involved in the local folk music community, who sometimes comes to the Getaway, and who IS a midwife. Of course, since notice hasn't gone out yet to FSGW members, no one has yet responded, so I can't say with any certainty she's planning on coming.

Lloyd--there might be room to park an RV at our Camp, but it won't be in a place with electricity. Or you can have a cabin space, with electricity. Or check out the Travel Trailer Village at Prince William Forest National Park (an old name, and I don't know what the facility is like, but you might find information is you linked there through the Prince William Forest Park website: www.nps.gov/prwi
The Travel Trailer Village is about 1 mile from the festivities. It's out near the state highway, just at the turn-off onto the gravel road that leads into the park and dead-ends one mile down at our camp.

Actually, from that website, I quote:

Travel Trailer Village is a private, concessionaire operated full-service recreational vehicle campground located on the north side of the park. Information and reservations can be obtained by calling 703/221-2474.

hmmm..there is a parking lot..(several camp sites...some bigger than others...not sure which one we'll have...hope it is the same one we had for the Spring gathering....but not much way to do electricity..they just aren't set up for it)..we do have to park carefully and effieciently, as these camps are used a lot for kids camping, where a lot of them come by bus.

Susan-Marie, there are always plenty of kids, but it is a forest and you have to be sure someone is keeping an eye on the little ones. We have at least one mom who usually brings craft supplies and ideas, bless her heart. Also if there are enough kids coming, we'll set up a kids' music workshop or two. There are interactive games led by one father, aided by several teen-agers who are veterans of it all, and he holds different sessions for the various age groups.

Everyone, you would do well to bring a warm sleeping bag. I'm also planning on bringing a heating pad or electric blanket if I can (there's electricity in most or all of the cabins.)

Can anyone bring up last fall's threads, including the very nice post-Getaway thread that Roger et al posted? I can't do a forum search any more, sorry.

I'm going to be the program chair again this year (for my sins) and would love to set up a half-hour or longer Mudcat mini-concert, with each of the out-of-town Mudcat attendees doing a couple of songs. Also, anyone with ideas for a workshop can contact me, especially if you're volunteering to lead it. I can't guarantee we'll have room for everything, but I want to start planning now.

Also, we have Saturday and Sunday night sign-up concerts, (one song and one appearance per person) as well as the daytime workshops and the late-night singing. We try to reserve the Saturday concert for out-of-town people who will have to head for home before the concert starts on Sunday.

There are usually two, three or four sets of workshops, mini-concerts and sing-arounds going during the day. Some favorites are the 2-hour Gospel sing-around on Sunday, drinking songs, sea songs, country & western jam, and a variety of other topical workshops as well as the eternal parking-lot picking which is often done in the center of the various cabin areas, with the fall foliage all around. There's a pond, a stream and small waterfall (It's the "Camp Pleasant" site again, right, Charlie?), lots of trails.
