Well, back from a lovely week in the mountains and have been hard at wrok (and also at work) on the Getaway program.

Mudcatters, your input will make a big difference. If you've been here before, you know that our program is very inclusive. Workshops are mostly participatory, "We have met our leaders & performers and they are us."

So. The first thing I need is to have a clear idea of who is coming, what kind of music they like, and what special interests they have. I will be e-mailing the people who attended last year, and have put a request for workshop ideas in the FSGW newsletter; but would also like your input on this thread if possible.

If you are definitely coming, would you please either PM me or, preferably, post to this thread. Include the kind of music you like to play and/or sing, the kind of jams and open sings you most enjoy, and if you have an idea for a workshop you'd like to attend or lead.

If you've been to other Getaways, mention the workshops you'd like to see repeated, and workshops you wish we'd had in the past.

If you have a special interest you'd like to share, mention that too. It's especially helpful when people have several interests and are willing to fit in wherever I need them!

We just switched to a new internet server so I have to move last year's Getaway program info to the FSGW web site ASAP. Once that's done I'll post the address here so you can get an idea of the kind of things we do

The program always includes some themed sing-alongs and jams, some country/western music, sea songs, and ballads. There are a few mini-concerts, some sing-arounds and some specialty or "concert" workshops where the leaders perform a few pieces and then open the floor to participation. Last year we had specialty workshops on fiddling styles, mountain music, Irish traditional styles among others.

Well this is just a "teaser" to get us started, there will be a lot more program information coming for the next few weeks.

Here's a reprise of something I wrote at the start of the earlier Getaway thread. It sort of summarizes the "feel" of the program.

the Getaway is about participation and mutual enjoyment. It's home grown all the way. We usually have about a dozen special guests but they are still guests like everyone else, maybe leading a workshop or giving a short concert during the day but then joining in as "audience" or "contributor" in other people's workshops and joining in the late night singing.

There is a daytime program of four or five tracks of organized workshops and sing-arounds during the day and there is jamming going on much of the time as well.

The program consists of workshops, themed sing-arounds and jams (blues, C&W, pub sing, sea songs or whatever) and a few half hour concerts. The only difference between a workshop and a sing-around is that the workshop is intended to showcase attendees with special knowledge in the type of music being featured. The leaders get a chance to do several songs apiece during the hour, besides inviting the audience to participate. For example, last year we had "Mountain Songs and Ballads" and "Irish Unaccompanied Singing" workshops among others.

We started the concerts because so many people want a chance to hear, say, Kendall, or Big Mick Lane, or Bob Zentz, or Ed Trickett, etc. Different people are featured each year including, most years, one or two relatively unknown musicians and/or non-professionals.

There are sign-up concerts Saturday and Sunday, late-night music after that. Next year we think we'll set aside a cabin near the dining hall for an extra late-night music venue.

Also if there's a chance you'd like to lead a workshop, I need to know if you will only be here for part of the weekend.

I'm about 80% but can't do the entire weekend. Maybe just Come up Saturday and leave Sunday afternoon. Maybe more but no promises. I'd be more than happy to do a Blues Slide workshop with an emphasis on prewar blues if anyone would like to mess with that stuff. If not, being a first timer, I'll just go witht the flow, be it jus' hangin', 'er doing a short performance, 'er whatever...

Ferrara, Kris (not "Chris." Be afraid.) and I are 2/3 of Woodchucks' Revenge. Our website is here. It's still very much under construction, but the "CDs and Tapes" clicky will give you the playlists for our two CDs and an idea of what we do.

I like cowboy songs and murder ballads and flatpicking, even though I'm not very good at it. Kris likes the more ragtimey fiddle music best.

We don't really specialize much. That's one of the problems we have when we go to get gigs. A promoter asks "What kind of music do you do?" and we answer "Songs we like." Oh well. We'd be available wherever there was any use for us.

yes, it will be my first Getaway. Here's some info, please PM me if you want to know more:

I am a singer/songwriter, so I play mostly my own stuff, which has the underrunning theme of "singing the praises of ordinary people", with 30% wristslashers, 30% tearjerkers, 20% historical and 20% lighthearted (and a few "funnies"). I accompany myself on 12- and 6-string guitars according to the song, and have developed a rather unusual fingerpicking style - so they tell me, to me it's normal - emphasizing bass string riffs.

But I also like to join in and do harmonies - both on guitar and vocal - in just about any style. I am a compulsive harmoniser/hummer.

I like to listen to anything except opera and Chinese music (I will skip any related workshops at the Getaway therefore ;-)). I am attracted by the unusual (a strong riff, a fusion of styles, a song about some piece of history unknown to me), but especially attracted to strong lyrics from unusual angles.

I tend to concentrate on English traditional folk, singing unaccompanied, but like listening to almost any music with an emphasis on the general folk idiom.

Something I'd like to see is a 'Song Challenge!' sing around and/or workshop - maybe a selection of three or four 'challenge!' type topics - which could be handed out the night before the workshop and then results sung ?

I second JAB's suggestion for a repeat of the Jug Band workshop/sing around! I hope Lisa Null is planning another vocal clinic (and I hope I can get to go to all of it for once!) I assume there will be a gospel/hymn sing. A workshop on duets might be nice?

While I haven't yet sent in my registration, I'm definitely intending to be there.

I play guitar and banjo, and my "bag" is singing folk-type songs, almost exclusively story songs. I do very little instrumental-only playing, and I'm not too interested in playing as part of a group; that is, I'm a solo act folk singer, with guitar, banjo, or unaccompanied.

The reference to a "Song challenge" above puts me in mind of a game format I've had in mind for years. It starts out as a sing-around song circle. The first singer sings anything he/she likes. The next singer has to sing a song which uses a theme picked up from the first song. Thus, Jesse James could be followed by a song about bank robbers, or murder, or whatever. The third singer has to sing one based on a theme from the second singer's song. No repeats of previously done songs allowed unless it's a substantially different version. If a singer at his turn can't come up with an appropriate song, he's retired from circulation. Sort of like a spelling bee. One might run into some rather creative rationalizations for how the offered song is related to the previous one; that could make for a lot of fun. This could go on for quite a while if the singers assembled have large repertoires. Last singer left wins.

So tempting to set up a workshop on "Incompetent Banjo" ... but I guess I'll refrain so's to speak.

Good ideas, keep 'em coming. We can't use them all alas because time doesn't permit, but it ALL helps me get a feel for the kind of stuff this year's guests would enjoy.

I absolutely have to get a bit of my own work done for the next few days but as early as possible, will post a list of proposed workshops including the ones we've come up with so far in local discussions amongst FSGW members.

I'll be there, of course. Ballads, gospel, shipwrecks, mining disasters. Also, I learned a lot of new stuff last spring in England. Actually, I should say I'm learning a lot of new stuff I heard for the first time in England. I'm doing a workshop for NOMAD called England Revisited where I'm doing nothing but songs from England that I never heard before this trip. Maybe Jacqui and I could do an English Song workshop.

Some year I'll get to the Jug Band workshop.

Can't wait. It'll be nice to meet some new mudcatters.

Rita, you forgot me (sniff, sniff).

Songs for depraved adults sounds good. (Rita, Middie doesn't usually get too awful depraved, if you know what I mean.)

Old or new singable songs with lots of harmony, and trying to find the elusive "missing notes" with voice or fiddle; trying to figure out guitar chords fairly quietly and watching people's hands; the odd fiddle tune.

I had an idea about the songwriting workshop, if there will be one. T the ideas for songs could be really mundane ones such as words (verbs, nouns, adverbs, adjectives). "Reflection" or "scream" leaves more room for being devious than a strict and detailed topic.

Fingerpicking for Dummies might be good. The 'for Dummies' books are used by experts in whatever field, so the title isn't really accurate. They could be subtitled 'Simple things you might not have known even if you're a genious'. Something along the lines of how to design an appropriated accompaniment for a song.


'Trees in Story and Song': good way to work the stump songs in, but there's also oak, ash, thorn, maple, apple, leaves and Wood(y Guthrie...maybe that's pushing it).

Let me point out there's an elephant in the living room...
A Fielding workshop. He made a lot of friends at the Getaway, influenced people, and there may be a few stories we haven't heard yet. Sandy should have first refusal for leading it. I'll volunteer for whatever, and I'll also nominate Mick because his computer's messed up and he can't refuse (not that he would). Maybe others knew him well and would be good leaders, too.

I have a particular interest in story songs. They include English and Scottish ballads and many, many others, both traditional and some not so traditional. Some of the songs I like and sing are not technically stories, but have a sort of narrative feel about them anyway. If there were a session/demonstration/workshop on story songs (as the definition is widened above), you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be there!

Right now it's looking pretty good for me being there (it's just a matter of figuring out my getting there...).
I'm best at play-party songs and singing games- many of them are the kind the young folks did when dancing was forbidden. "Oh, no, ma'am, we're not dancing, we're just playing a l'il ol' game!"
Lots of fun and flirtation. Technically they're considered kids games now, but who's gonna tell if it's just overgrown kids?

Anybody else want to help direct ( not lead, since I have no idea where it will go!) such a workshop?

Late night, perhaps- One thing many on the thread commented on was the fact that ideas often cam when the person was tired or distracted.

I haven't forgotten to pick up my records- next Monday is the first day off I can make it over.

Bruce I like the idea of "C&F of Muses" but it's too early to say for sure, it sounds very good to me though. Mmario? Would you like to co-lead this?

As I said, this weekend I'm mostly tending to other stuff (TWO trips to take Darriel's belongings to his new apartment at Towson U, etc...). I am WAY behind on e-mailing all the folks I haven't heard from who came to last year's Getaway. (Probably won't e-mail any of the Shellbacks unless I know they are coming....). If I've heard from you here, I won't send you an e-mail, OK?

As Bill says, "little by little, the bird builds its nest." We'll get it built. I have really liked having the Mudcatters' suggestions, last year and this year. It helps assure me I'm on the right track, and last year a lot of neat workshops were first suggested on the Mudcat Getaway threads.

And, what about a progressive song circle, such as starting with murder and other crime songs, moving on to prison, pining-inside-or-outside-the-bars songs, then ending with getting-out-of-jail songs? It would bring an interesting mix of people together.

I have reserved the weekend - and plan to be there.

I haven't run a workshop at the Getaway in a while - but it sounds like there might be plenty of folks with new ideas and I am happy enough joining in with other folks.

Has anyone considered a workshop for LOUD singers, loud songs, and loud choruses? Maybe it's a little crazy, but it might encourage some people to sing out. All this stuff about sharps and flats harmonies is all very well for those who can do that sort of stuff, but speaking as ToneDeafDave, there is something to be said for volume.

Re: Fat chorus - Jonathon used to refer to some of the Boarding Party numbers as 'fattening'. I never knew whether it was a private term, but it referred to those songs with long, rolling, melodic choruses, like 'Shallow Brown', that make you want to stand close to the other singers and drown in the music.

One of these years, you may be able to pop up in your private jet, but until then, think about pencilling a Getaway in the schedule and doing a few house concerts on the way to give people a taste of whatever's on whatever CD you happen to be making at the time. I miss you at these things!

'Fat chorus' could mean a nice, long one, or one with a ton of harmony.
I like "ToneDeafDave hosts BellowFest 2004" sounds pretty good to me. Of course, well-fleshed harmonies tend to get a bit loud. In any case, everybody needs a good bellow now and then, and it sure helps me loosen up.

I'd go to a slide workshop, provided it wasn't scheduled opposite an obnoxious chorus workshop.

Clarification on Fingerpicking for Dummies: My problem (one of them) is combining picking patterns, figuring out what works for a song. Rick taught me a couple of basic patterns, I came up with a few on my own, but I don't understand how to vary them within a song, how to make it smooth, or how to work tunes in. It's looking like I'm not going to have the commitments at work that I thought I was going to have, so our registration should be in the mail today or tomorrow.

If it's not too late for suggestions, how about a crime and punishment session? I like the idea of a progressive crime session, but in most of the songs I know the criminal just dies (hanging, firing squad, guillotine) and never gets as far as jail.

Oh, dear, I knew there was a reason I hadn't registered for the Getaway yet! I had a nagging feeling there was a conflict, and sure enough, I finally got together with the other members of the small group we've formed, and yes, we have a concert. That weekend. With a practice the day before.
I have to say I'm really looking forward to the concert- it's our first launch as a group- concertina, harp, recorders, accordion- ancient Irish airs, English country dance tunes, and other sweet melodies. But once again I'm going to miss the Getaway!

Program progress note: Carly Gewirz -- bless her heart -- is now acting more or less as Program Co-Chair and doing a wonderful job. We're still in early planning stages but have some wonderful special guests this year, more info as we go along.

Carly has been involved with folk music since college, has been a member of FSGW for at least the 25 years that I've been involved with it, and has been to almost every Getaway in that time. She knows many more people than I do, has been a Getaway chair and president of FSGW and held other offices, too numerous to mention, and has great suggestions on the program. And unlike me, she's organized. It's a real pleasure to have her working on the program.

Many, many thanks to Carly for the hours she is putting into this.

I'd be interested in an instrumental harmony jam, tunes slow enough to play with, etc. I'd be willing to bring enough (by ear) to get the ball rolling, and might be able to get notes as well. Dancing didn't seem to be a big hit last year, but those of us who played had a blast.

I'd also be willing to help with a Civil War songs workshop, bring lots of music and words, etc. if someone else is able to do any accompaniment.

Rita, Bill suggested that I might be able to ride with you folks. Would it be at all helpful if I came over a few hours early and helped oranize stuff? I do a lot of coalating and filing and finding for my dear spouse, and could probably get out to Wheaton by noon or so.

Rita, thank you for those kind words. This will be my 34th Getaway, I think, so obviously it is an important part of my life. Helping out is the least I can do.

I'm pulling together some craft activities for the weekend. Is there anyone who would like to learn to spin wool? I can come up with some dropspindles that people can take home afterwards, and enough fleece to drown in, if there is interest.I know, there are so many good music workshops....but since I am helping with the schedule, and I don't want to miss music either, I'm hoping we can put the instruction time in some little used spot early on, and then people can practice as they please all weekend.

What about a workshop on folk songs we sang as children. The Froggy Went a'Courtin' threads made me think of it.

And, songs about gardening, the earth, nature, etc. Many of these would probably be "in the tradition" but there are also many traditional songs that would fit.

Susan, yarn for the auction is a great idea! I sympathize with the wool problem; my husband is allergic to wool! I do much of my own spinning in other fibers: silk, cotton, etc. I generally start people off with wool because it is easy to get spectacular results fast, and other fibers are generally more expensive. But I will bring some cotton along for those who have problems with wool.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: I am sure I am not the only mom, dad, wife, husband in the bunch who experiences the Getaway weekend as a soul-and-sanity restoring weekend. Just music, fellowship, and good food we didn't have to cook or clean up. The FSGW folks are living saints to have designed this wonderful event.
It is a lot of work for a lot of you, and comes across as a labor of love.

I was feeling smug because I already put El Greko's name on my mini concert list back in late August, having a sneaky idea that it would be well worth it. But after I read all those requests, I thought I'd go back and review my correspondence with him about it. Haha, there was no correspondence because I forgot to talk to El Greko about it. Oh well. He is now signed up for a mini concert.

And, we're going to have "What I Learned from Rick Fielding." Lovely idea, Jeri.

We had to limit the number of mini concerts or there would be no participatory stuff, but it was SO hard to do! We could easily have had twice as many. If we missed you and you'd like to be considered for a mini next year, talk to the program chair as soon as you know you're coming.

since Camp Ramblewood (once cleverly called "Camp Escher") is on a hill, all you need to do for your exercise program is choose workshops that require moving from one building to another....

If your goal is to avoid exercise, pick one spot for morning and one for afternoon, and dont move....you will have fun either way. For those who have never been there, I will post some 'general' pictures of what former years looked like...maybe later today.

Rita, I think one always has to address 'punishment' when they talk about 'crime'. Otherwise, it just looks like bad guys get away with all sorts of things. Plus, there are a few songs about punisment that don't talk about the crime. All those 'gallows tree' songs where people are wondering what they're going to get when the guy's dead. A huge percentage of All Songs Ever Written will fit this workshops... murder, theft, rape, poaching, incest, adultery, beheadings, hangings, naked pages with big swords, damning people's eyes, eels (or marrowbones), throwing people off the ship or leaving them on and sinking it, transporting people someplace horrible such as Australia...
...maybe you should have a workshop for "Songs that Don't Fit in Crime & Punishment." There ought to be a couple.

Sinsull, the list posted in this thread by Rita on 9/27 at 9:56 p.m. is as close as we can come to an "agenda" at this point. We're still waiting for responses from some of the people we have contacted, and when we get those, we'll have to sit down and figure things out more closely. But that list should give you a general idea, keeping in mind all the caveats Rita mentioned.

Whatever the exact program, it's bound to be a blast! We haven't had a bad Getaway yet, and this is the 40th one!

Hmm, I guess I'd better get my registration in! I was waiting till I found out if I could stay over till Monday morning, but it looks like that's not to be. One of these years...

Anyhow, folks, your patience will be rewarded before long!

Proofread them, please! I know there are errors.

The timing of the workshops was very tight this year. There are a number of leaders with time constraints, which limited us. We try to set up different styles of workshops for various musical tastes in each time slot. But we know most of us have wide ranging musical interests so of course there are conflicts.

Workshop leaders, make sure we haven't scheduled you in two places at the same time. Make sure your name is spelled right. Make sure the workshop we have you doing is the right one!

And, please let us know if you have a conflict, or are very unhappy about missing whatever is scheduled against you. We may be able to move you, although it is a very tight schedule. Or, we may be able to find another co-leader to assist or replace you so you can see at least part of the conflicting workshop.

We have been asked to set up workshops on "The Songs Kids Really Sing" and on "Nature, Plants, Trees, Gardens" etc.

The problem with "Nature" is that it had to be scheduled against some real blockbuster workshops. We moved it about four times but in a nice, full schedule there are always conflicts. Would anyone like to lead this, where we have it scheduled?

The problem with "Kids" is that we just didn't know who to ask. Who is fluent in this kind of song? The kids concerned are about 9 to 12 years old and have made it clear they don't want "nice" songs about little duckies, they want parodies and irreverent stuff if possible.

GETAWAY CRAFT & CD MARKETPLACE

The space between the dining hall and the TV room is our Marketplace. For example, Folk Legacy and Camsco Music set up tables there when they can get to the Getaway. And Bill and I set up a table of our woodworking. Etc Etc Etc.

Feel free to bring your own CD's or crafts for sale. Except for FL and Camsco it's mostly on the honor system, since no one wants to sit and take money when they could be off making music.

This year we're asking people if they would make a donation, earmarked either for the Getaway Fund or the Scholarship Fund, based on 3 to 5 percent of their craft and CD sales. It's purely voluntary though!

We have a Silent Auction in the marketplace area to benefit the Getaway Scholarship Fund. (Minimum bid increase is $1.00) Be generous in your bids -- it benefits us all since it lets some of our favorite people come to the Getaway in years when they couldn't afford it otherwise.

This year, there will be a Make-Your-Own-Earrings area, with materials, findings, & instructions. It will be available all weekend and the small fee will benefit the Scholarship fund.

Any other ideas & suggestions?

Well, Mike, you said it isn't critical, so I don't feel your request puts any pressure on us. And it didn't sound like whining/whinging, just an honest comment on what you would prefer.

But, you know, I have been rushing to get this posted for more than one reason: First, people are very eager to see it; and second, we now have until Tuesday to get people's feedback and see if we can tweak it into being a bit better for everyone. ... And then give people a quick chance to look at the tweaked version, and see what we inadvertently made much worse....

If I can move all the songs in the White House back for half an hour, for instance, so that Kids doesn't totally overlap Kendal & Jacqui's wedding celebration, we can have a fantastic leader for kids songs (Gorgeous Gary, who never stopped being a kid, thank heaven....).

One great thing about the Web is this kind of feedback loop is now possible.

You may an e-mail annoucement as well as the notice on this thread. We want to reach the non-mudcatters for their feedback too, so will e-mail all the registered people and the ones we know have been lollygagging and aren't registered yet but we know they are coming. :-)

The Committee may not be able to meet before Sunday, but we may do a few things via phone and e-mail.

LOL When you warned us that it might be chilly at the Getaway, I was wondering if it might get down to freezing. In the Misty (not Frozen) North, our high temperatures for the last month have been in the upper 40s. The "high 60s" to us is SUMMERTIME.

AlaskaMike, being nearly 600 air miles from Southeast Alaska, at the Getaway, will probably be in t-shirt and shorts.

It's all in perspective.

Ebbie...there have been a very few times in the past when the temp got down in the mid-30s, but mid-Oct is hard to predict here....we have had "durn chilly" one night, and sat in the sun in shirt-sleeves next day. 66°C would equal 151°F. It's a good temperature for nice, hot soup, but not live people. If you're cooking someone, you'd want an internal temperature of 165°F, 14° higher. Most food should be cooked to an internal temp of at least 145°F. Of course, the exterior temperature is usually higher, so 151° would be more of a very slow roasting temperature.

I have just thrown the bones, made my JuJu, and the results are in.

Friday will be warm, 65° with small chance of a shower 46° at night, so the Micca will have to wear some pjs. Saturday will somewhat cloudy but dry, brisk at 58° mid afternoon and 40°. Nothing good beer or cider won't stand up to. Sunday much the same and dry. All in all the JuJu forcast a cool and robust getaway.

Susan A-R and I are leading an instrumental harmony/jam session on Monday at 5 in the gym. We have selected a few tunes to start with: Lord Inchiquin, High Road to Linton, Red Red Rose, Red Haired Boy, Swallowtail Jig, and John Ryan's Polka. I'll bring hard copies on Friday. Most of these tunes are in the Fiddler's Fakebook, if you want to get a head start. Of course, all instrumentalists are invited to come and lead a tune or play along.

We hated to do it. But there's a possible, straightforward solution that we didn't see. How's this: If you can get all the key people to agree on it, we'll move Hank Williams to 10:00, move the Rick Fielding workshop to 11:00, and those who want to can get to Elizabeth's concert. I would have done it before, but didn't know if you, Kendall, and Mary would be up for a workshop at 10 a.m.

How about it, Sinsull and Mick? And Kendall? Can I start Hank Williams at 10? (Mick could still sleep in if he likes...)

All you city folks just don't act right, trying to take advantage of naieve folks like meself. Mick, I'm hurt. The workshop is a very serious thing, about a friend we all miss dearly. We want to remember Rick and the things he taught us with all the reverence called for, and that's what I'll be thinking of when I get up on Saturday morning. Many of you will now be feeling that Mick's comments were unnecessarily hurtful. Mick, on the other hand, has likely understood me completely and is probably not going to sleep at all.

Hopefully, there will be songs, and there will be stories. There will be a few tears, but a lot of smiles and some belly laughs. My concept of the Rick workshop is that it should be a loose-structured one with people sharing whatever they'd like to relating to Rick. I hope, in the way good Getaway workshops often go and the way any gathering involving Fielding always went, this one will be heavy participation, and I'll do my best to encourage that.

Mick, SINSULL's Hank workshop is at 10, we're at 11. Please save me a cot if you get there first.

I am STILL working out what tune to play for Kendall! I've got new strings on the fiddle, although I might bring two of them, and the exploding bow has been fixed. Just have to put strings on the guitar. If I don't show up Friday night, something happened to my car. It's making funny noises that the mechanics say are 'normal'.

Here's a suggestions (A strong suggestion) to workshop leaders.

Whether you are leading a straight sing-around or taking a more unstructured approach, at the very start of your workshop look around, see who's already there, and ask how many of them would like to sing during the workshop.

Then you may want to say that if they haven't gotten to sing by about 5 or 10 minites from the end, please raise their hands & remind you. It's awfully frustrating for people to arrive early and never get to lead a song because the circle filled up with latecomers and never got to them.

Maybe we should have a Divorce Party so lots of us can be feted. There's plenty of good songs. I'd volunteer to lead one next year, but I know better.

Pauline, it's scheduled right after lunch on Saturday in the TV room and is definately open to everyone. Rita did her best to be sure the conflicts could work out for everyone. SINSULL and I are planning and with help will attempt to lead what could prove a large and perhaps unruly crowd ( the groom seems to have friends of a questionable nature) ...
As Kendall and Jacqui C are getting married the day before Getaway we thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge it in song and good humor. In all inclusivity, when we reallized there were multiple newly weds around we wanted to be sure we got a change to give a few kind words to the young'uns as well.... Hope to see you there.

I was VERY disappointed to see with the schedule change that I couldn't catch part of yours or you part of mine. But just the way it goes sometimes. I want to hear that Steven Stills song you mentioned in the last gardening thread, but there is plenty of singing and sharing aside from the workshops. So many great offerings and opportunities are packed into this weekend that I always have to miss something important to me, or leave something in the middle to go catch the end of something else. Life should always be so full of these kind of choices, eh?

There's one guy who comes who's a fungus expert. One year, I remember he had traipsed all over the woods and brought back al different types of fungus: edible, inedible, beautiful, ugly, toadstools, mushrooms and cloud's ears, and he'd tell people about them.

The scheduled workshops and mini-concerts are great, but so are all the un-planned things that happen.

And, a bit of news, I hate to write it, but Sandy Paton has a bad chest cold/infection. He's been on antibiotics but it's still pretty fierce. It ain't at all adviseable for him to take such a long trip while he's this sick, not to mention sleeping in unheated quarters. So, the Patons won't be coming to the Getaway.

Well, I'm sure that while all of us will miss them a lot, we'd rather have Sandy take good care of his health than otherwise. He and Caroline send their love to all.

Have made a couple of appropriate minor adjustments to the program but all sessions but one are still in the same place. Will re-post the schedules sometime tonight or early tomorrow.
