Hi ,
   There was a soldier ,Dave Gray or Grey can't remember which spelling Royal Signals in Germany he was a folk club organiser and singer. Did a charity concert with Harvey Andrews during the 70s. He was a Staff Sergeant AKA The Squire. He did indeed tragically die aged 33 whilst in Germany. The above songs are the sort of subjects he sang about and they did make an LP, that could be him.

I am at the moment playing a forces folk LP from Germany,1975. Dave Gray has two beautiful songs on the LP, Song For Sara, and The Ladies Go Dancing At Whitsun. I am having the LP converted to CD.

Although I remember Dave Gray I'm afraid I have no idea what happened to him after the early 1970's.
Regarding Dave Royle I havent had any contact with him since the late 70's. but when I was in Chelmsford early last year for the funeral of Trevor Moore ( The Riggers and Truss+Bucket Band )I heard that Dave R was living " somewhere in Suffolk " but I have no contact details. Sorry I cant be of more help.

Another thought: I wonder if Dominic (see above) has any news of Dave. ? Or maybe if anyone knows how I might contact Dave Royle, to ask him about Dave Gray...?

I've asked Helen Watson (the wonderful blues etc singer), who used to do gigs at the Castle in Brentwood, and around the Hornchurch area too, but she couldn't help, alas.

Hi, and thanks, all. I'm Paul Callick (Weald Road), btw, and I posted the Q here about Dave. I still play music (now, trad Irish) but have never heard from or about Dave since the 1970s, when we were doing gigs together. I still dream about some of his songs. I did email lanfranc but no reply.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Dave used to sing and write some terrific little songs, in the folk clubs around Upminster and Brentwood, Essex. A drole, slightly gloomy young guy with fizzy hair and a 12 string guitar. Does anyone know if he's still knocking around or playing at all?
