Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Neighmond Date: 08 Dec 12 - 03:41 AM Olddude, I got your case this afternoon-i'll photo it tomorrow. Cheers, Chaz |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 05 Dec 12 - 11:37 PM I own one battery watch, a columbia sportsman's watch. Only because I don't want to carry a 992B in the middle of a fly fishing stream. That is the only time it is used |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 05 Dec 12 - 10:18 PM The new mechanical automatic Longines ain't bad either. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 05 Dec 12 - 08:20 AM You read me wrong. I'm not selling my Longines because they're owned by Swatch. I'm selling because I no longer want battery-driven watches and much prefer mechanical, hand-wound movements. I've also been looking at older, non-quartz Longines... |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Dec 12 - 07:56 PM Longines still havetheir own plant, and their self-winding automatics are very good. Their L561, 25 jewel, is a fine watch. Down-grading a fine watch because the holding corporation also makes inexpensive watches is nonsense. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 04 Dec 12 - 03:37 PM I discovered some years ago that Swatch also own Longines - which, for some weird reason, seemed to debase my two Longines watches. As I've now given up on battery watches, they're both going for sale at the moment. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Dec 12 - 03:20 PM Adding a bit more to the above, the Omega 2500 series, Planet, has been tweaked to 27j, and lists at $4500 or better. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 04 Dec 12 - 03:06 PM The Hamilton name lives on in a pretty good watch. In 1966, Hamilton aquired Buren of Switzerland, and moved there in 1969. The Buren-Hamilton microroter was a small movement automatic. It was bought by Omega-Tissot in 1971. Omega-Tissot merged with ASUAG to form the Swatch group. Their better movements are made in their ETA factory in Switzerland. ETA is the largest maker of Swiss movements. Eta 2824-2 movement is a 25j automatic, the 7750 var. has stopwatch capabilities. The ETA 2892 is 21j (to 25j) with three grades, the top adjustable to 5 positions and temperature and, with specs of -4/+4 seconds/day, meets COSC specs of -4/+6 seconds/day, matching the best of the old pocket watches. Omega Seamaster, current model, is a 2892 (omega 1120); with addition of a coaxial escapement it becomes the Omega 2500 series. The top movements, in Omega, IWC and Breitling, match Rolex in quality, although purists will argue about this. Don't ask me to explain any of the above, which I found out by looking at several websites, and was caused by an adv. for Hamilton Jazz Maestro automatic chronometer, ETA 7750, in the NY Times for $1845. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Herga Kitty Date: 04 Dec 12 - 02:01 PM Will - Kendall's Elgin watch was fixed by Derek Burgess, who lives in Bournemouth Kinson) and has a shop in Poole Road, Branksome. Jacqui gave me the watch on one of her visits to the Herga folk club and we gave it back to Kendall when he and Jacqui both came to the Herga with MGAS and Richard on 9th May last year - the evening before Kendall's famous birthday surprise when Mike O'Connor sang "Carrying Nelson Home" to him on board HMS Victory in Portsmouth. Kendall may not remember it (though he will remember the Victory!), but Derek and I sang together at Herga on the 9th and they have met! Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 04 Dec 12 - 01:42 PM Checked, Dan! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 01:13 PM Will check your PM |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 04 Dec 12 - 12:38 PM Chaz make sure you don't need it for yout 944 ... wow that is a great watch I am jealous ... great trade |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST Date: 04 Dec 12 - 03:49 AM Yep I will dig it out at work this week Cheers! Chaz |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 03 Dec 12 - 07:18 PM Will, I can't say. I never did meet him. I gave the watch to Herga Kitty, she gave it to her Mate, Derek, he fixed it and she gave it back. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 03 Dec 12 - 06:05 PM No Dan - the only size 18 I have now is the Ball-Waltham RR Grade from 1920. All my others are size 16. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:57 PM Hey Will do you own a PS Bartlett Waltham size 18? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:56 PM neigh do you still want to sell the case for my 936? thank you :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:41 PM Kendall - Derek lives in Hamble, near Southampton. Any connection? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:28 PM Will, I wonder if that Derek is the same man who fixed my Elgin 12? Herga Kitty steered me toward him. He did a beautiful job and it keeps perfect time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:16 PM A 944 holy cow those are rare, incredible find |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Neighmond Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:11 PM A lady traded me a 944 Hamilton movement for a real nice single-sunk Hamilton Dial last week. Can't wait till that one is fixed! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 01:34 PM This is one of my favorite carry watches. A Hamilton 940 21 Jewel. Everything is wrong as far as case, and dial but it has more RR history then any 10 940's out there. It left Hamilton in 1902. When the dial went to hell the railroad guy put a steel dial on it. When the case went to hell he put a cheap case on it. Both were done in the late 20's. The original owner worked on the B+O Railroad (same as my dad did). It was RR used and carried for probably 60+ years. So I still carry it and it is dead nuts accurate because of Mahlon's serice. carry 940 |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 10:50 AM I will get it all fixed up fer ya when it come my brother |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 03 Dec 12 - 03:48 AM You're probably right, Dan - my friend Derek (who sold me the watch and who tried to repair it) said he had trouble with the balance - wouldn't stay tight. As I said before, he's really a Swiss wristwatch man and freely admits that he doesn't know a lot about American pocket watches. I bought his last three! Anyway, anything you can do - always greatly appreciated. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 03 Dec 12 - 12:21 AM got to thinking about your 978 Will. I would be money you broke a balance jewel. I got lots of them for Hamilton's. Mahlon will fix it right up. I just gave him probably 400 of them |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 02 Dec 12 - 07:25 PM Today I changed to my 18 Illinois RR watch, and it too is plumb on the money. A thing of beauty it is too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: kendall Date: 02 Dec 12 - 07:14 PM Dan! I never said that, did I? I must have been referring to my snub nose .38. My goal is to get ANY Hamilton! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 02 Dec 12 - 11:40 AM Will absolute beauty, that looks like one with the gold center wheel from the picture. The 992 was the most famous of the Hamilton's they were so accurate that they were made and cherished by Railroad men for 60 years. Wonderful watch |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 02 Dec 12 - 11:37 AM I asked Kendall once if the size 18 were hard to carry for him. Without missing a lick he said "I am use to carrying big things in my pants" I laughed for two days |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 02 Dec 12 - 11:07 AM I have every flavor of the 936 except the one that has the 936 in the center above the Hamilton. If anyone runs into that puppy please let me know. I am trying to get every variation of the old workhorse |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 02 Dec 12 - 11:07 AM Here's a Hamilton 992 from 1925 - just been bought it as a present... Face Movement Case outer Case inner 1 Case inner 2 |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,kendall Date: 01 Dec 12 - 03:11 PM Of all the watches I have, none is more accurate than the size 12 Elgin that Dan gave me. I've carried it for the last three days and it is spot on. Not close, right on. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 Dec 12 - 12:10 PM a swing out case is exactly what I was looking for as they were the most commonly used on the 936 thank you |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 01 Dec 12 - 12:03 PM Neigh I sure do my friend. Please pm me and I will buy it from you ... I cannot find a decent case on ebay ... tip out is perfect thank you Dan |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Neighmond Date: 01 Dec 12 - 01:42 AM Olddude, are you still wanting a case for a 936 Hamilton? If so, is a tipout case all right? I have one in yellow gold filled that is still fairly decent. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 30 Nov 12 - 07:22 PM Will your watchmaker should have one, that crown is the same for about 50 different watches |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 30 Nov 12 - 05:24 PM Just been checking on the 571 casing. The case is Style Number 3055 and is called the Streamliner - correct for the movement - but the winder on it is wrong. It should be straight sided and slightly arched to follow the shape of the two side pieces that hold the pendant bow. I'll keep a lookout for one. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 30 Nov 12 - 04:09 PM Thats a beauty will ... now one thing with the 571. they never put a stop on the stem. If ya pull up on the stem by accident, you break the entire movement so just watch that. They are great watches and will keep dead nuts RR time. Your is very good looking |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Greg F. Date: 30 Nov 12 - 02:32 PM Thanks, Q - looking more tempting all the time!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 30 Nov 12 - 02:19 PM My latest acquisition - bought from a pawnbroker's on eBay... A nice Elgin 571 "B.W. Raymond": Elgin 571 dated 1953 - face Elgin 571 dated 1953 - movement I don't think it's been treated very well - you can see the scratches around the balance cock and in other places, and the crown is loose in the stem - but it's keeping dead accurate time, and it was reasonably cheap! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Nov 12 - 01:42 PM My old Seamaster is a 1010 or 1020. Haven't had the back off. Some of these older models had a plain back with "Seamaster" and "Waterproof"; not the fancy horse. I would like to get a crystal, mine has a replacement acrylic with a few scratches. Replacement band, but I prefer leather anyway. These old ones are 17j. If you can get one cheap, grab it and get olddude to send it to his master watchmaker. Serviced ones sell for $600 and up. I would guess mine (bought years ago at house auction) hasn't been serviced for 30 years; I have been wearing it for two weeks, and it is running well, gained 1 minute in that time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Greg F. Date: 30 Nov 12 - 12:19 PM Very tempting, Dan... Thanks! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: olddude Date: 30 Nov 12 - 12:00 PM Greg this seamaster needs repaired but Mahlon will make it like new again http://www.ebay.com/itm/OMEGA-VINTAGE-SS-SEAMASTER-AUTOMATIC-1010-FOR-REPAIR-NO-RESERVE-/271110974591?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item3f1f792c7f |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: GUEST,olddude Date: 30 Nov 12 - 11:47 AM wind it up and carry it gnu, you are most welcome my brother Greg that is amazing watch, what an interesting history wow |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: gnu Date: 30 Nov 12 - 10:22 AM It's beeeEEEEEUUUtiful! I am gonna wear it with pride and remember what a great guy you are every time I show it off. Thanks, Dan. Thank you. g PS... I don't even know if I will wind it until I wear it to a formal occasion. It's just as pretty not wound! |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Greg F. Date: 30 Nov 12 - 09:22 AM Lincoln Watch |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 30 Nov 12 - 04:54 AM Wasn't there a note discovered in the back of one of the presidential watches when someone opened it to clean it? Or is that some weird figment of my imagination? |
Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Desert Dancer Date: 30 Nov 12 - 02:04 AM The sound people for Spielberg's movie "Lincoln" tracked down some old watches: In fact, Burtt spent hours at the White House recording sounds from three clocks and several mahogany doors that have survived since the Lincoln administration. As a result, every door slam or key turn heard in the movie comes not from the set, but directly from the source itself. Watch this: creating the sounds of 'Lincoln' from a silent era (article, with video) ~ Becky in Long Beach |
