Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches From: Will Fly Date: 29 May 12 - 07:05 AM Ladies and Gents... presenting... an Elgin 18s open face pocket watch from 1902: Face Movement I picked this up at an online auction house in Bath (Gardiner Houlgate) for £75 last week, and it arrived this morning. Like all these things, you see one photo - it's not like eBay - ask the auction house if it's working, bid and hope for the best! Anyways, it's working beautifully and keeping good time so far. It's in superb condition for a watch that's 110 years old - and what a weight! It's the first 18s watch I've acquired and it's a heavy bugger! |

Size 18. They were marked adjusted on the bridge, but I don't know how many positions- is yours marked? A cheaper, good pocket watch is the 916, not railroad acceptable but a good timepiece. Often an be had for under $100 in good condition, and the 16 size is easy to carry. |

Why not wind it and leave it for 48 hours - then check it. If it's running then that will give you an accuracy test and you can wind it again. If it's stopped, then reset it and check & wind it 24 hours later. |

The hard-core watch forum guts don't rate them - but they're hard-core watch freaks. My view would be: if it gives you $100-worth of timekeeping - in your eyes - it's done OK for you! :-) |

The name is "Stauer," but similar new watches appear on Ebay under various names. They are either 23 or 27 jewel. It is not one of the older good Russian (Zenit) etc., types. (Older Chinese? Those I don't know). I have commented on them before. |

Quality? Will it last 100 years? Dunno. Seems to run OK. Haven't checked long term accuracy, since I don't wear it constantly, and the automatic wind gives out. Large and clunky compared to an Omega, etc. Has anyone come across a study of these new cheapies? |

I have a brushed velvet one that I bought many years ago - many years as testified by the enlarged gap between the buttons and the buttonholes! - and a nice suede one. A good, matching chain is also nice. The size watches I have - mainly 16s - and the casings really demand a nice chunky link size. I'm scouring eBay at the moment - picked up a couple recently and have another in my sights at the moment. Sigh... will this madness never end... :-) |
