Several months ago I gave my Amish watchmaker some parts. In those parts was a totally whipped Hamilton 940. This is what he gave me back as a gift for my grandson. I don't even want to think of the hours he must have put into this watch. The back has an engraved steam train. all original. The movement I gave him was completely trashed out, corroded, broken staff a mess. this is what he did as a gift for me

I am touched deeply

Dan - my Hamilton 978 is sticky - turns out the balance staff fitting is a little loose. My watchmender buddy is reluctant to mess with Hamiltons - can I send it to Mahlon via you for some TLC?

History of Omega Seamaster
http://www.omegamuseum.com/seamaster
The first models, 1948, were simple watches, self-winding but no frills. See illustration at Omega site .
The Model 300 was the first of the "professional" range of models.

The wikipedia article is inaccurate.

The Seamaster is modeled after watches produced for the British military in WW2.
I would like to find one of these.

Omega is still excellent. I had one of the chronometers that was taken to the moon, but I sold it.

For the past week I have been wearing an Omega Seamaster, which I picked up with another watch in the 1960s. Keeping time, but I should get it cleaned and resealed. Dunno its serial number or grade, I haven't seen its insides.

Apart from the 1790's chased gold and silver pocket watch I mentioned near the start of this thread, I was marvelling again today at the mid-1930s Omega stainless steel art deco model that is my everyday pocket watch and how it just keeps going on and on without losing even a few seconds per day.

You know me, Dan, my prices are too high for you.

I'll let you know when I get the new cases. The seller had a death in the family so he didn't get them in the mail until last week. I'll give it to you for "future considerations." Never know when I might need something.

My post got lost, just said no extra 18 cases.
I will have a 16 for 992B, that I am replacing. It has a name on the back, but otherwise a sound case.

And still they roll in... Bagged a UK Military watch with an Elgin movement which arrived today. The weird thing is, I can trace its history back to 2011. A guy named Ernie B from Albuquerque sold it to a guy named James from Battlefield, Mo - who sold it to a guy named Stuart in Scotland - who sold it to me! And here's the watch:

1942 British Military pocket watch with Elgin 954 Grade, Model 7 movement

Superb condition and runs like a dream.

Movement

Think Mahlon might be able to supply one? It's running fine, but I'd like to get that sorted.

Please don't credit me with watch repair knowledge. I was a complete failure at diagnosis and repair, so I give watches that need TLC to watchmakers.

936- Haven't looked it up, but watches from that company that have the number on the movement are priced higher than those that are without the number. In many cases, the movement has something extra that is lacking on the others.

Tha Ball movement looks good. A clean may be all that is needed. I don't have a 19j movement.

Silveroid swingout cases were recommended by some railroads because they were sturdy. The NAWCC site has something on that, I remember reading it some time ago. I have a couple of old RR watches in that casing, one of them with the Canadian Pacific shield and beaver on the movement. I have passed that one on to my older son.

I think this one Will .. my 936 is for Mahlon to do. They made several variations of the 936. I been trying to get all of them. This variation has the 936 listed on the movement so it is very interesting to me. I get it like new again.

That 936 looks to have some great potential, Dan - are you putting it together yourself? Brave man!

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches

Well, it's winding OK - just a little sticky on the running. I'll get my watchman to give it a clean and checkover. If he has trouble with it, then I'll gladly send it to Mahlon via you.

The case rear has some engraving on it - a little faint now but still nice - and I don't have any other watches with swing-out cases. So I'll have a ponder on a Silveroid...

And thanks again for all your advice and help. Greatly appreciated.

Will
send it to Mahlon, he will make it purr for you. I can tell him its from you ... my guess around 80-100 bucks tops as I can find the parts for you free if the Ps bartlett works. I can give him a case to case it for you, then I can send it back to you

its an 18, find out if the gears from a 18 Waltham PS Bartlett will fix. I have an absolutely beautiful movement I can give you if they work.

here is my latest, it is all there and I have a flawless dial for it. Now to put it together. all original

Just looked I don't have any Ball parts, however ask your watchmaker if the winding gear is a Waltham like off a riverside or Ps Bartlett. I will aslo ask Mahlon when I see him. If so we got one ... Now it took a good smack. I bet the balance staff is whipped .. should be no issue

I saw it I was going to bid but you go after it my brother .. now here is something ... the guy said he would sell it to me if it didn't go over 200   so you may want to hold off. If the one with the broken balance staff (I can fix it got lots of em) doesn't get his amt, he will sell it to me .. which means its yours. I got one in parts that just needs assembled .. gonna try that myself ... however I have a master looking over my shoulder when I do this winter. So you may want to watch that one

Straying again from pocket watches, my Swiss Bulova, RR certified in Canada, RR9362Q, keeps near-perfect time after 15 years. Should be cleaned.
They sold for $80 retail, one of the best quartz watches ever made and worth hunting for. The Canadian model has the 24 hour dial.

If that Omega is in good condition, $250 is a bargain. I have a Seamaster that I picked up in a household auction. Needs cleaning and re-sealing, not cheap. Probably the 21j, but 23j and 24j, I think, were added for advertizing clout.

Rolex, is a competitor with a more expensive watch, but I doubt that it is really all that much better.

more history, we shipped a lot of them to England in WWII. Monty's tank crew carried those Walthams. After the war they were all returned or recased for civilian use or just lost in history. Hard to find an all original one like yours. I am jealous

I have a crap load of parts for that also, if you ever have trouble just drop me a line. I got what ya need. Great find. Looking at my military book, you movement case, hands , dial the whole nine ... absolutely all original not one that was pieced together from spares like on ebay.

Subject: RE: BS: Old Pocket Watches

by the way , that was one hell of an accurate movement. Don't be fooled by the 17 J ... remember a watch is fully jeweled at 17. It is all about the movement. don't believe me, look up the Nawcc discussions on jewels and movements. Now the navigation 4992b has a hacking mechanism. See the sweep hand also ... They are 1000 bucks. Mahlon been wanted to put mine together for me. I want to tackle it myself (ambitious project to say the least at my skill level)

Wow you did good Will, those things are darn hard to find, most are pieced together, yours is all original. Now that one is not an aviator, it was typically used by artillery commanders in WWII. Standard issue 17J. They are just so hard to find. The on coming up for auction is the holy grail. That is a Army Air corps navigation 22J. I have one but I need to assemble it ... going to be a project ... dang I need to invest in some tools
