Subject: RE: FSGW getaway workshop: song collectors From: Barry Finn Date: 08 Aug 03 - 01:40 PM Hi Nancy Jean, great idea for a workshop, love it. If you'd like I have some tape cassettes. One set from George Herbert ('THE' Master Rigger from Geelong), who sailed the Baltic & Cape Horn to Australia trade (don't knw what industry) pre & post WW1. I also have field recordings from Roger Abrahams (thanks to Abby Sale) that he used for his collection in "Deep the Water Shallow The Shore". Maybe you can enlist Liam's Brother in this. This shoul be a great one. Hope there's plenty of time or it all. Barry . |

Subject: RE: FSGW getaway workshop: song collectors From: Charlie Baum Date: 06 Oct 99 - 01:47 PM The workshop is scheduled (tentatively, at least) for "Lodge B" (near where all the Mudcatters are sleeping) on Sunday after lunch. There are electric outlets, I would assume, but no resident equipment is supplied--bring your own sound stuff, and there will a place to plug it in. --Charlie Baum

Subject: RE: FSGW getaway workshop: song collectors From: Nancy-Jean Date: 06 Oct 99 - 01:45 PM I am bringing a "box" which plays CDs and tapes. |
Subject: RE: FSGW getaway workshop: song collectors From: Sandy Paton Date: 06 Oct 99 - 01:07 PM Will there be any way to play CDs at the workshop? We've got a CD-R of our soon-to-be-released trad CD made up from items in our archives. If not, I'll bring a portable unit (boombox) along with all our other stuff. Sandy |
Subject: FSGW Getaway Workshop on Folksong Collectors From: Nancy-Jean Date: 06 Oct 99 - 11:51 AM This workshop will begin with a presentation on the Flanders Ballad Collection--Helen Hartness Flanders (on tape) explaining the historical context of her work, excerpts of field recordings and other amusing and personal memories from someone who knew her. What happens thereafter depends on who comes! So who are you? Sandy and Caroline and ....... It would be fun to hear about (and from) other well-known and lesser-known collectors. How is collecting done? How does one credit the source? What do you do with your collection? Hopefully we will hear both dialogue and song and everyone will have a chance to do a little collecting on the spot. Looking forward.... Nancy-Jean |
