I am trying but there is truth to the term "Old Dogs, and New Tricks" Every time I learn a program they change computers on me, or download new and improved software. then I get issued several manuals of instruction to read, which I am assured are easy to read and will teach me everything I need to know. Bigger Bytes and Better Bytes (next time someone says Byte me I shall just ask where and how hard?) Well, just in case you can't figure out the drop-down menu, you can click here for the "About the Digital Tradition" page. The drop-down menus and the menu at the top of most pages may be easy to miss for some people, but once you get used to it, it makes things easier to find.

There are only two HTML things you need to learn to make you look like a whiz around here. First, and most important, is the line break, just a BR enclosed in two angle brackets, which looks likt this

<br>

The thing that really makes you look like a star is when you do the sacred blue clicky thing, which looks like this:

<a href=http://www.mudcat.org/>Click here</a>

I realize that some people use quotation marks within links, but they're not needed here and tend to cause more problems than they solve. You can actually copy this example, and save it in a collection of HTML tags - just replace the red part with the complete URL you want to link to, including the http:// stuff (best to copy it from the address bar of your browser, and paste it into the link). The blue part is your reference word, and can be anything you want. then, as in all HTML tags, you close it off with a slash and a repeat of the command, </a>, in this case.

It's still there, Bill, but it took me some time to find it: Upper right search window, lower entry, go for 'About the Digitrad', then click 'introduction' and you should have it.

I have been guilty of the same type of error. (they just don't show the way I type em mates.

I regret that I am guilty of gross ignorance,and do not know what a line break is on my keyboard, and as far as HTML is concerned; if it don't turn blue when I type it it won't turn blue when I hit Submit. Otherwise I would be happy to post lyrics that would show properly. (It's all done with ELECTRICKERY) Would some kind person direct this 21st century Luddite to master the art of electrickery? It is reference to how songs, lyrics/tunes, have been able to transgress the confines of "ill-literacy" and transcend generation after generation....it refers to the legacy of of fore-beres (sic)

I have no doubt that there is a tune within YOUR very soul that has been passed on from mother, father, grandma/pa....

THIS passing of "the oral tradition" is lost....as it becomes polluted, variated, enriched , along the way....dick and Susan ....in their inspiration of GENIUS recognized that the "WEB" was a means of gathering together pieces of the "ORAL TRADITION" that might easily be lost....

Because of the "Web" the musical knowledge of the past can be "digitized" into a "data-base" that permits a much broader sharing of tunes/lyrics.

Please!!!! Stick around....A song will come to your mind....and then Post It.....the words that were were taught are quickly slipping into oblivion.

The DT/MC has evolved into an amazing place.

It is much bigger, there is more "flash," than ever before.....and sometimes things get lost.

I "visit" a lot of "web-pages" within any given week. Many of them have credits. (Sometimes, one cannot get past the credits to the page itself).....However, in the DT past, there was a wonderful story of dick and Susan meeting with their notebooks of notes...and the DT being born out of it...

Perhaps the story is still here....and, I am blind to it.....If it is not...please try to re-establish it...(unless, of course, the creation has become a "Frankenstien's Monster"

It is the innocent simplicity of folk songsthat drew me here....and the innocent simplicty of the site which appealed to me...(this was a place I could "deposit" tunes/lyrics that "no one else but my family knew" it was an "archive" of folk-song historia.

Aw, JenEllen, was I stern? I didn't mean to be, although I can't quite remember which is who sometimes. As I recall, you might have been one of a number of people in the "Living Room" who were posting good songs without telling us the name of the song. The standard format for the database is to have the song title in ALL CAPS and the songwriter's name in (parentheses). The only HTML thing you need to know is to put the line break <br> after every line in lyrics, so the lines don't all get mashed together. If you goof up on HTML or something, post a message in the Help Forum (see links at top of this page), and a Joe or JoeClone® will jump in and fix it for you. Sorry if I sounded stern.

Look under Digitrad Links for About the Digitrad in the lower area of the blue search box for FAQs
The Digital Tradition is almost 12 years old now - no it wasn't on paper, Mario, other than the precursors in my notebooks and Dennis Cook's, but was on disks rather than the net, originally for CP/M machines.
Songs can be contributed by posting, e-mail, or snail mail and usually find their way into one of the semiannual releases of the Digital Tradition, eventually. We now have easy-to-remember e-mail addresses: [e-mail] and [e-mail]. If you are including a tune, send it to Dick since he is much better at the various tune formats than I am.

do a search on the forum for "DT" and it should explain a few things, but real quick....

it was started by DickG and Susan of DT and was paper for a while, then hosted by Xerox, then Max offerred them a home.

Dick updates it, hopefully twice a year (the oct 99 version is live on this site, but not available for download yet) and yes, there is a chance, subject to the powers-that-be that lyrics posted here will be added.

The question may be obvious but I really don't know. How was the DT put together - I thing it is pretty fantastic by the way, and who by? How is it updated and if for example I post some lyrics in response to a thread will these ever be added to the DT?
