Sure Rick, sounds great (hmmm, wrong choice of metaphor), why not? I used to play the recorder, badly. Couldn't be worse sounding than that. What does one need?
yours, Peter

Actually Peter, if you're game, do you wanna try and make a couple and we'll learn together? Misery loves company and it can't be as hard as working for a living.

Rick

Thanks Rick, I suspected it was weird, and I should have known you would know. Pity it is so hard to play -- I loved the sound, wonder if it is as hard as a shakuhachi. When is one of these things going to be easy to play!
yours, Peter T.

Hi Peter. He's playing a Chalil, taught to him by an Israeli musician named Hillel in the late forties. He shows you how to make one in one of the Rainbow Quest videos. Very easy to make...exceptionately hard to play (there's no mouthpiece). They are used by both Palestinian and Israeli shepherds, and the repertoires of each are remarkably similar.

Songs on the Chalil that Pete has recorded several times are "She Moved Through The Fair", Rozinkes Mit Mandlen, Sally My Dear, and Schtille De Nacht.

He's a fine recorder player as well, having recorded with treble, baritone, tenor and alto.

I've learned a few of the Chalil tunes on Pennywhistle but they don't sound the same...not as subtle.

Rick

Thanks, Mark. It's not a recorder. It has a sound a bit like a Japanese flute (hollow, I mean). Not high like a pennywhistle, or sounding like panpipes. MAybe it is a bad question, if he uses a whole range.
yours, Peter T.

I've seen him play recorders and other end-blown flutes. Perhaps it was something like that.

Couldn't figure out how to label this. I have a couple of Pete Seeger albums where he plays some kind of rough flute (on songs like "Pretty Saro"). Can any one of the many Pete Seeger experts here tell me what kind of flute he plays? (quite nicely) -- I have never seen him in concert; nor are my album notes much help. Anyone?
yours, Peter T.
