Subject: History Needed -- Song
From: bluefrog

I am trying to find out information on the history of the song "Barges". If anybody has any info or knows of any sites that I can check out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I believe it may have been in the Girl Scout songbook. My wife remembers singing it in scouts back in the sixties.

My 12 year old daughter sang this song in music class in 3rd grade, but she shared no history of it. It does seem to be a children's song. The image of pirates boarding a barge on the "ocean blue" is rich, don't you think?

Ok so I have a scruffy beard and yah I I have a weight problem. But I still take issue the notion that the image of a pirate boarding a barge is "rich"

I also sang it in the 60's in Girl Scouts- maybe that's all there is to the history! And, I do confess, I teach it to 3d and 4th graders because it has such a great descending major scale pattern in in (" I would like to go with you...")

Ther's a cracking song by Ralph McTell called Barges but I don't suppose that's the one?

On the Mississippi River a group of barges filled with pigeons went aground and the entire tow was stuck fast blocking the river traffic. The Capt. was adept with a bullwhip and he'd crack his whip and get the birds to flying. That lightened the load and they easily backed off the sandbar. Of course, that was a pigeon-tow.

Barges filled withy Tic-Tac candy would be a tic-tac-tow.

Hammers would be a hammer-tow, but they'd need to be removed surgically!

(rim shot!)
