Hi, I'm trying to remember the lyrics to an old girl scout song I learned at camp that sounded something like atacatanuba, though I'm not sure of the spelling. I believe it was an Alaskan song about a baby in a boat. Thanks!

This request ain't gonna go far unless someone knows the song. In the event no one does, what else do you recall? Where did you sing it (geographic location)? Any other of the song's content or story line, etc.

It sounds like the song I learned about a seal hunt. Is it an innuit song? I posted something about it, for a Christmas play that was supposed to be set in an innuit village.

There was one I learned in Girl Scout Camp in Texas in about 1963 or 4. It involved hunting and rowing a kayak (with hand motions) and had a verse in English, with a chorus in non-English syllables. I am recalling it as 'osh-kosh-nunga' which actually may sound quite similar in song. Might this be the one?

This is Jenn--Art was a registered Girl Scout but he doesn't remember many songs.
In the Pacific Northwest in Girl Scouts we sang a "seal hunt" song similar to "Goin' on a Bear Hunt", except seals, you know, and the chorus was "Atcha Katcha Nuga, atcha katcha nuga, hey, neesa nay, neesa dona neesa day" and the verse (?!) was "Etcha katcha neesa wa-a-ter" twice. Can't remember any English words except the narrative about the seal hunt. I will ask my daughters if they remember any more than that. Does that bear any relationship to what you are looking for?
Once we get this one nailed down, I'm trying to remember all the words for the hiking chant that went "Tongo", "Jiminy by-by-oh"...

Jenn, we are surely thinking of the same; a verse to a markedly different melody and tempo I was recalling as sounding like 'etchee kola nishi wanna' and I am sure it is what you are recalling.
And I am registered as both a Girl Scout and a Boy Scout. The best assistant Girl Scout leader I ever had the pleasure to work with was a man whose daughters were in the troop; his wife was a scientist and he was a full-time dad. My BSA uniform has the patch identifying me as a Scoutmaster because there was no way I was going to answer to Scoutmistress.
Anyway, the osh-kosha-noonga part was sung briskly with paddling motions, and the 'etchee-kola-nishi-waa-naa' was sung more slowly to only two notes (A-A-A-A-A-A-A-F) and accompanied by different hand motions imitating the hunt, starting with shading the eyes and looking around; the English lines to the same [chant] were along the lines of 'this is how we hunt the beaver' and 'this is how we chase the beaver' (which reminds me that it was neither bear nor seal in the Texas version, though the chasing of a beaver is an intriguing mental image) though now I have a picture of an otter in mind as I try to think of the other verses.

Here's word from my sister, who has worked with Girl Scouts and scout songs since she was about seven:

I know the song they're talking about, but it's not one I ever knew
well. It seemed to turn up at about the time I was finishing up at
Girl Scout camp. I thought it sounded more like, "Ah na ka na no a
way," but, as I said, I really have no idea. But I do remember
gestures that had to do with paddling and shielding one's eyes while
looking out over the water for something. Seals, I guess. I'll sing
the melody for you when you're here, some night when I've had a good
drink or two.

We used to sing an Eskimo hunting song at various camps (Girl Scouts, Campfire etc.) in the 50's and 60's that went like this-this a phonetic spelling someone gave me years ago but I have never seen the song in print.

Isn't the oral tradition fun when trying to track down songs from
memory. Regional variations play havoc with trying to get words and melodies straight. I sang the Eskimo song in Scouts from TX to Minnesota to Oregon, each place had it a bit different.

I was looking for the same lyrics and ran across this website. Its funny how we "know" the song, but each of us remembers the words a bit differently. My momories, and they are phonetic:

Pepsi cola me sa waki. . .(then make a kind of grunting noise)unh

The "pepsi cola" part was done with your hand shading your eyes, looking for seals, or walrus', first with your right hand, then the left, then the right again, all in a sing-song voice. The grunting after the me sa waki part was you throwing a spear at whatever you were hunting!

The aki daki dooma part had your arms crossed in front of you, held at chest height, rocking them up and down, left right left right, then the hey diddle part you opened up your arms, then closed them, then opened, closed.

I never knew the whys and wherefores of this song. We just sang it and had a good time!!
