I know of this as a Sweedish song
Who can sail without wind
Who can row without oars
Who can say farewell to a friend
without shedding a tear

I can sail without wind
I can row without oars
I can not say farewell to a friend
Without shedding a tear
There are Sweedish lyrics, but I don't think I'd better even try, as my memory of 'em is about twenty years old, and Sweedish was never my language.

Even I thought it was a from Sweden, but in my old songbook I find it was a song from The Aaland islands. The laungage in The Aaland islands is Swedish but the islands not depend to Sweden.

This Lyr Add shall be dedicated to my youngest cousin, Solvei Pipaluk Sandberg Nielsen, who passed away less than an hour ago, at the age of 5... she'd suffered from leuchemia for more than a year now... may she rest in peace...

VEM KAN SEGLA
Text: unknown/trad.(?)
Tune: Finnish-Swedish folktune

Vem kan segla föruten vind?
Vem kan ro utan åror?
Vem kan skiljas från vännen sin
förutan att fälla tårar?

Jeg kan segla förutan vind,
jag kan ro utan åror.
Men ej skiljas från vännen min
förutan at fälla tårer.

TRANSLATION (Who can sail):
Who can sail without a wind?
Who can row with no oars?
Who can part from friends of theirs,
without to shed any tears?

I can sail without a wind,
I can row with no oars.
But I can't part from friends of mine,
without to shed any tears.

Hope that your little cousin has found her way to the light, Freso (Solvei = sun(ny) way)!

'Vem kan segla' is probably the most well-known folksong of Åland (Ahvenanmaa in Finnish), which is an autonomous province in the south-western archipelago of Finland, consisting of about 6500 islands of which some 65 are presently inhabited.

Without oars who can row?
Who can leave a friend behind
Without the tears that flow?

I can sail without the wind,
Without oars I can row,
But I cannot leave a friend behind
Without the tears that flow.

I went to a wedding in Stockholm about 3 years ago and thought I would learn a Swedish song for the occassion. The Groom was a Chilean refugee the Bride Russian and I think we counted 23 different nationalities at the wedding.

I was delighted that all the Scandanavians knew the one Swedish song I had learned and we sang the first verse in Swedish, English, Spanish, Russian, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish and some others I can't remember then sang the second verse in each of our laguages also. For a song with only two short verses it lasted about 30 minutes and was avery moving, unforgettable event.

And here's the Danish version, then:

Hvem kan ro uden årer
Hvem kan skilles fra vennen sin
Uden at fælde tårer.

Jeg kan sejle foruden vind
Jeg kan ro uden årer
Men ej skilles fra vennen min
uden at fælde tårer.

From: Joe Offer

I didn't find it in any scout songbooks, but it's in a book called Tent and Trail Songs from the American Camping Association, originally published in 1962 by the Cooperative Recreation Service - so I figure it's one of many international songs that came into use in the US by way of the Cooperative Recreation Service. It's also in a Cooperative Recreation Service book called East-West Songs, which apparently is the original U.S. source of this song.

Here's their version. It's only slightly different from the others, but posting the exact lyrics makes it less cumbersome to explain the MIDI.

-Joe Offer-

Who Can Sail
(Swedish Folk Song)

Who can sail away with no wind?
Who can row without oars?
And who can separate from dear friends
With never a single tear.

I can sail away with no wind;
I can row without oars,
But I can't separate from dear friends
With never a single tear.

Vem kan segla förutan vind, vem kan ro utan åror,
vem kan skiljas från vännen sin utan att fälla tårar?

from Louise Dannielson, Stockholm -published in East-West Songs, Cooperative Recreation Service 1960

The tune is very much like the ABC tune that OldPossum posted above.

Subject: ADD Version: Who Can Sail/Vem kan segla
From: Joe Offer
Date: 11 May 08 - 11:38 PM

My Dutch-South African friend sang the Cooperative Recreation Service translation Friday night. She's known it all her life, and I don't think she recalled where she learned it.

Another person at the song circle came up with translation, which appears to be the same song as one verse posted above:

Who can sail when there is no wind,
With no oars to be rowing?
Who can sail far away from friends
    With no tears a-flowing?

I can sail when there is not wind,
With no oars to be rowing.
But I can't sail far away from friends,
    With no tears a-flowing!

All this started me looking, and I found lots of recordings and translations. There's a nice YouTube recording here (click).
There's a somewhat different version on the Smithsonian/Folkways/Monitor album Best-Loved Songs of Sweden, by Saga Sjöberg and Kai Soderman. I don't see a date on the album notes, which say that "Vem Kan Segla" is a folksong from Norrland, which is the northern half of Sweden.

There are four versions and a MIDI at ingeb.org:

Vem kan segla förutan vind?
Vem kan ro utan åror?
Vem kan skiljas från vännen sin
Utan att fälla tårar?

Jag kan segla förutan vind,
Jag kan ro utan åror.
Men ej skiljas från vännen min
Utan att fälla tårar.

tr. Frank

tr. Frank
Who can sail without the wind,
Who can row without an oar,
Who can leave behind a friend,
Without just one tear to pour?

I can sail without the wind,
I can row without an oar,
But I cannot leave a friend,
Without just one tear to pour.

i was cleaning my room and found a piece of paper all folded up and wrote on the outside was 'sail away' and inside is a song similar to the ones here, but theres 2 added verses... i have no idea where i got this from but i wrote it down when i was like 8

who can sail away with no wind?
who can row without an oar?
and who can separate from a friend
without a single tear?

who can fly to the top of a hill?
who can reach the sky?
and who can separate from a friend
without a tear in his eye?

i can sail with no wind.
i can row without oars.
but i cant separate from a friend
without a tear in my eye.

i can fly to the top of the hill
i can reach the sky
but i can t separate from a friend
without a tear in my eye
but i cant separate from a friend
without a tear in my eye

i was in girl scouts so that could be where i got it, but i honestly have no idea..

wow so many different versions... I heard somebody else sing it and thought it was beautiful... haunting, almost eerie... anyway, they sang it like so.

Who can sail where the wind won't blow?
Oars are needed for rowing
Who can part with your heart aglow,
Part when your tears are flowing?

They didn't have a second verse or anything. I heard someone sing it in French the other day, too. That's what got me looking. they called it "Sans verses des larmes" or something like that.

Who can sail when the wind won't blow?
Oars are needed for rowing,
Who can part with one's heart aglow,
Part when your tears are flowing?

I can sail when the wind won't blow,
Need no oars for my rowing,
I can't part with my heart aglow,

Who can sail away with no wind?
Who can row with out oars?
And who can separate from a friend, with out a single tear?

Who can fly to the top of the hill?
Who can reach the sky?
And who can separate from a friend with out a tear in his eye?

Finnish version. 'Vän' is translated as 'kulta', which is explicitly romantic, closer to 'sweetheart' or 'darling' than 'friend'. Then again, the Swedish 'vän' can be read as more romantic than English 'friend'. Also, this version refers to the 'sweetheart' going with someone else, not just 'separating'. Btw., I've seen a much longer Swedish lyrics to this, more like eight verses, no two.

Ken voi seilata tyynessä,
kenpä airoitta soutaa?
Keltä voi ilman kyyneltä
kulta nyt toiselle joutaa?

Vaikka seilaisin tyynessä,
voisin airoitta soutaa.
Eipä vois ilman kyyneltä
kultani toiselle joutaa.

Literal back-translation from Finnish to English:

who can sail in still waters
who can row without oars
who can without a tear
give up their sweetheart to another

if I did sail in the still
I could row without oars

Full lyrics:

Who can sail without wind? Who can row without oars?
Who can separate from his friend without tears falling?
I can sail without wind. I can row without oars.
But I cannot separate myself, without having these tears falling.

Though some contest there's a second verse/the complete lyrics go:

Who can sail away with no wind? Who can row without oars?
Who can separate from a friend without a tear in my eye?
Who can fly to the top of the hill? who can reach the sky?
Who can seperate from a friend without a tear in his eye?

Asked to sing for a charity gig in support of the Middle-East refugees (calais crisis, etc) I was led to review* the English translation and this version was indeed very well received by both an Irish audience and choir in the last two days. I hope you'll like it as well.

*(I was happy with none of the above versions which seem to betray the original Swedish or be prosodically/musically awkward...)

Note that this song can be sung as a round (canon), in my youth in France, we used to enter after the firs line (right after 'wind') which gave the song a //3rd-type of harmony.
Recently a young Norwegian woman living in Galway taught us to enter after the 2nd line (just after oar) which gives a //5th-type harmony, much more dramatic in tone! Absolutely gorgeous.

Note that by entering after both the 1st and 2nd lines, the harmony is even richer. Enjoy!

It's really tough to work up a singable translation that really works. Here's the first translation I submitted for the Rise Again Songbook

Who can sail without the wind?
    Who can row without oars?
Who can part from a friend
    Without shedding tears?

I can sail without the wind,
    I can row without oars,
But I cannot part from a friend
    Without shedding tears.

Here's the final version we came up with as a group effort:
Who can sail without the wind?
    Who can row without oars?
Who can separate from a friend
    Without shedding tears?

I can sail without the wind,
    I can row without oars,
    But I can't leave a friend behind
    Without shedding tears.

I think the final product works pretty well.
