Will-or-Ben, this has got to be the neatest and most surprising Getaway Reflections thread we've ever had. Almost certainly it's the first time a rap has been written just for a Getaway thread, and -- it's good stuff, too! Thanks.

There was some doo wop singing at the Getaway one night, but it was outdoors and people were smoking. Yuk! I couldn't stay. Next year we'll have our doo wop indoors and smoke free. I changed my mind about fiddle harmony with doo wop singing. I tried it tonight and it was not good. I can sing as part of a group but certainly not solo.

Pauline, I expect you are right. I don't suppose a bodhran would be a good doo-wop enhancer, either.
But I love it that there is some of everything, and especially that there may be some of everything in one after-hours session!

Jeri--that is just priceless (2 Nov 2005 3:40 PM)--and it basically fits the meter too. Maybe a group could work it up and sing it at a concert--the element of surprise would still be there for anybody who hasn't read this thread.

You have a real gift for this--didn't you do one about a plane with Cat Stevens being forced to land in Maine?

"Guest" (Ghost)--

Do-wop--"witless smarmy pap for the masses"--yeah but it's so much FUN when you do it yourself--is it possible that you can't?

And "smarmy" is a bit harsh. "Silly" is a lot closer. It's also fun to sing and not take what you're singing seriously--or do you have no sense of humor?

Bobert ol' pa, you got reason to be right proud of that youngin'. Thanks, Ben-Will, for creating for us!

Like Opera, I can appreciate the talent and creativity of rap--I just don't enjoy it.

Annie recorded most of the 'Raise the Roof' gospel session and sent me a copy which I got to sample last night. Gave me chills to hear all those wonderful voices raised in full chorus again--to hear the harmonies weave in and out, to picture again the face of whoever was leading a particular song.

The Getaway is pure magic!

Janie

Runaround Who?

Here's my story sad but true, about a plucker I once knew
He took his axe and he played around, with every other kind of sound
He played the blues he played some soul, he some tunes that are very old
But I tell you girls he'll steal your heart, he's just a round heeled musical tart.

A A Amos Jessup
A A Amos Jessup
A A Amos Jessup
With his baritone and his D35
He'll be the last one left alive.

Sorry Amos, just couldn't resist that one, *BG*

Okay I confess, I like Do-Wop. It's just plain fun with form and sound. A lot like this thread.

Well, Jock, I am just rocking back on my round ole heels. I gotta say. I have never been so honored in my whole wuthless life, and that's a fack. Thank you so much! Round-heeled musical tart indeed!! LOL!!!

Tinker, KT has "The Juneau Woman Blues" and I have promised her several other specific blues which might fit her framework of reference; she ain't grabbing at the opportunity yet, though. I promised to send her a demonstration CD of how they might be done.

I am behind on writing them, though, and I believe you are right -- the emphasis on lady's blues is perhaps the key thing to uncover the flaming world-class blues artist behind that deceptive, doe-eyed exterior of kind tranquility.

What do you suggest, as a piece de resistance?

A

PS Beaubear has promised if KT won't do the "Juneau Woman Blues", then he will; but I have reservations about hearing him make some of the assertions in the song....

Now Tami when have you ever heard me participate in a song that was anything less than appropriate.... After all the blues is an old and traditional genre. I wouldn't recommend anything that didn't meet that standard or that I wouldn't sing myself.
See it's perfectly safe.

Well, FOO! The message I posted earlier never made it - it must be hovering out in the Ethernet...

"Catter Jerry Rasmussen has written a wonderful song about the Death of Doo-wop and it's on the DT here:

Ten Pound Radio

I would like to renew my proposal for a Getaway workshop (which I of course forgot about while this year's Program Committee was meeting) called "Guilty Pleasures", in which all of use folkies who love rock'n'roll, doo-wop, etc. can sing our favorite non-folk songs in a safe, non-Purist-Snob environment, where I can sing "White Rabbit" or duet with Jeri on Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" without my husband or Bill Day scowling at me...

I know these kinds of songs get sung in the alcoholic haze of late-night songswaps, when you put your brain on auto-pilot and all the lyrics of all those songs you sang along with on the radio come back to you - but wouldn't it be deliciously fun to try to sing them in the Light of Day, in Defiance of the Folk Police who would Censor our Singing?

Come all ye bold folkies
and list' to my song
It's newish and mod
And not very long
You won't find it in Child
Or in Greig or in Peacock
'Twas collected in high school
And is now "Classic Rock"...

Being totally naive and not knowing what Doo-Wap is (WHAT! I hear you shriek), I searched our music collection and found a CD called Doo-Wap Volume 1 (Thanks Jerry R).

Next year perhaps Kendall, Giok, Andrew & Me could form a group called the Don't Waps!

Thatnks, Tinker fir the link...

Over at Tweedsblues we've had discussions about the links betweern rap and blues... That's kinda what got me curious about dopin' a song that contained elements of both... So when my rapper son, Will-to-me, Ben-to-everyone-else-in-the-world, came to visit this summer I was determined to see if we could pull it off and mix the two into a single song....

And it worked and folks in downtown Luray, who still ain't used to my foot-stomp hill country Mississippi blues got a lot to think about... But Will did a fine job and had has hands paintin' piccures and all I was tryin' to do was just hold a beat without really playin' nuthin' on the steel bodied resonator and the boy just went into it and then when he was done I used a little trickery to get it back into something 12 bar...

I think just havin' him do kinda a an impromptu improvisonal rap last nmight here in the Catbox was real cool of him since, hey, he is a youngin' and he thinks that we're all old, gray and drivin' Oldmosbiles...

Well, two outta three ain't half bad...

Bobert

Kendall, Kendall, Kendall...

What am I gonna do with you???

Yeah, a few years ago I woulda had to agreed wid ya then my son, Will-to-me, Ben-to-you, kinda pulled up my appreciation fir *some* of it...

I'll tell ya what, this summer when he and I performed our rap/blues stuff therer were a lot of folks who ahd never heard any rap they liked that came away with a new perspective... Depends on the artist...

Kinda like story tellin'... Some folks can tell 'um, others can't (but try)... You can tell 'um, Hey, I cna play some decent blues but I couldn't tell no stories... Justin Wilson could tell 'um... Hey, sometimes ya' just have to hear the story told by a story teller...

My son is a rap artist and ain't into talin' 'bout bitches 'er killin' cops...

Ithink if you go back and read what he put together in a very short time to say to us here in Mudville, I think as a stroy teller, ya might come back with just a little, maybe very little, respect fir what he is able to do on the wing...

All about stories...

Well Mary, something odd has happened to me this year, I seem to be having an attack of Getting Organized and have been keeping a file of workshop suggestions for next year's Getaway.

Now, if I can remember to get it to whoever does the program (who, me? work on the program again? no way, she says for maybe the fourth time...) maybe we can actually set up the Guilty Pleasures workshop, which I now remember you mentioned previously. (I can too remember things, as long as either [a] someone reminds me twice, or [b] it's at least 2 days too late to do anything about it.)

Also, Dick Greenhaus said he wants to do Songs from the Shower next year. He said it's the quintessential Getaway workshop.... Well, maybe. It's a darned good idea anyway, and we haven't done it for a long time.

Count me in! Shower singing is what EVERYONE does best.

When Elizabeth LaPrelle performed at the James Pharmacy here last year, she had the house spellbound, as you can imagine. But what REALLY brought the house down was the doo-wop duet she and her mom did as an encore. It was the icing on the cake!

And, I love the conversation around rap. As with any music/art form, there is garbage, and there is true genius. I remember being captivated by something on the radio that was both extremely smart, and at the same time pretty offensive. The smart part made me want to hear more, and understand more. You might imagine my children's faces when I described the piece to them. "MOM LIKES EMINEM!" Well, not exactly, but there's plenty that's worth exploring if you're willing to step outside your comfort zone and see into the lives of 'others'.

If you can't shift gears, you're destined to crash and burn. In music as in life.

Dani

I had hot water, and I took a shower. But there was no-one there to hear me sing, or to sing to me. I guess it was the weird hours, eh?

That's "Songs From the Shower," not "Songs in the Shower, Amos!

In about 1956, I was playing "oldies" for a friend's mother and we were singing duets. (The only one I specifically remember, because it was new to me, was "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie.") She said to me, "We think of these songs as classics, but I bet in 20 years or so, the rock and roll songs that you kids are dancing to will be considered classics." A wise lady.

I had hot water and I showered - but when you shower approx two hours after the others in your cabin went to sleep - you don't sing if ou want to live.
