Can y'alls FSGWers start the permathread soon so the conversation can get focused more on the logistics and less on the drinking? This thread is (of course) a good one to link people to for the booze news, but if every question on directions renews the booze blooz it will be awful crabby PR! :~) And the spirited talk has pretty much all been said.

My family had one reunion at the Baptist church in Machias. Many of the relatives smoked and dropped their butts wherever they chose. We were not welcome after that.

If you're coming early/staying late, there are lots of Mudcatters in the Washington, DC area. That said, DCA, BWI, and IAD (Dulles) all serve the DC area, and which airport is closest/best depends on whom you're visiting.

Maybe I should add that I am the designated self-appointed worrier-and-fretter again for this year's Getaway. Last year when Charlie Baum introduced me in the Sunday concert he said that with me on the committee, none of the other members had to worry about a thing -- I did enough worrying for all of us.

This is going to get NO sympathy from anyone, and probably no agreement from anyone, but ... minimize drinking if you can is my opinion. (Easy for me to say -- I have a 1 drink maximum these days! Sigh....)

Anyway if you can't do without, EAT YOUR EMPTIES!!!! We will need to have zero tolerance for beer cans, brandy bottles etc in the trash receptacles.

It is awfully hard to find a good camp and IMO if they are really serious about no alcohol there's just a chance we might be personae non gratae in future if they notice it.

Airports: It's 37 miles to BWI airport (Baltimore) and 35.5 to DCA (Washington National). You'll probably get better prices to BWI, but it's pretty close to a toss-up for distance. However, on a Friday afternoon, the roads from BWI to the camp will make for a MUCH easier commute than from DCA, since you won't have to cross any bridges from Virginia.

Totally (Tee) off the subject - but I haven't seen it addressed yet: Where is the nearest major airport to West River Camp? I've been in the Bay area but it's a longish piece of water; besides it was years ago.

I know that's the last line of the chorus of a long Victorian ballad, but that's all I know.

My father was born into a family that had been White Ribbon for three generations; his great-grandfather took the pledge around 1845, and his grandmother was the head of the Women's Christian Temperance Union for the Province of Quebec. Talk about a thankless task!

On the Right side of Temp'rance, we now take our stand!
We won't chew tobacco, because we do think,
That people who use it are likely to drink!!

Away, away with rum, By Gum, with rum, By Gum, with rum, By Gum!
Away, away with rum, By Gum, the song of the Temperance Unioooon!

Well, I could squeak through without the whiskey, but I'd prefer not.

We'd need a better singer than myself to volunteer to lead the workshop, though I'd gladly contribute, and a go-ahead from The Powers-That-Be. Interested parties can PM me snail mail addresses for their tapes. I'd probably be able to cough up a few Country gems for those interested, like "Little Bennie", "The Drunken Driver", "She's More To be Pitied Than Scolded", "Goodbye To Booze" and the like as well. We'll toss this one around a bit....

Any Program Chairman-types lurking out there, perchance?

He he
This sort of in an indirect way brings back memories of the time when I was living in Holland.
I had to go to a 2 week crash course on Dutch. It was at a Nunnery somewhere in the countryside. Can't remember anymore.
Anyway, at the end of the lessons for the first day, everybody was dying for an alcoholic drink. The nun in charge of the kitchen, opened the fridge and gave us bottles of beer. We were a bit gobsmacked, but it brought big smiles to our faces.

Is our annual pilgrimage turning into "Decanter Buried Tales"?

If we designate one of the workshops "Faith IN Our Father's Living Still", will they leave us alone, assuming we're supposedly performing hymns? Or maybe ones called "Reports From The Bottlefront", or "In Flask Company" might prove decent covers.

....Maybe some other "workshop" names will come up, too, but I'll be there wet or dry, intoxicated by music and friendship and try to deal the best I can with the existing climate. (Hell, easy for a Maryland boy to say....)

....Meanwhile, I have an LP from 1972 by an official student choral group from the U. of Illinois that I found once in a library sale, "The American Music Group Vol.2-Temperance Music" containing music taken from various temperance magazines from 1878-1915. No booklet of words with it, mind you, but it contains 24 selections with titles like "Tell Mother I'll Vote Dry", "Lillie Of The Snow-Storm", "Wine Is A Mocker", "Bibles And Beer" and "The Dead March Of The Saloon", and I'll be willing to run off tapes for however many might want to lead or participate in a workshop on the subject. More than enough stuff to augment your existing supply of hymns, country weepers and Sally Army ditties with their attendant parodies, and plenty of ammunition for an hour's workshop. PM me if interested, and I'll run some off and send them out at no cost for any who would wish to exploit the situation rather than merely lament it.

Severn

...Hey! Maybe even a 12-Step Workshop--"Songs Of Bill (ab)Staines"?

Charmion, I hope it works out so you can come to the Getaway, though a trip to England does sound great.

And I agree with you that alcohol is the least important part of having a good time at the Getaway. The point is the music and the people, and if alcohol eases that, fine (as long as we're discreet...). But we are NOT encouraging folks to get drunk. I'm a bit concerned that some folks who previously have been happy with beer may end up guzzling the hard stuff simply because it's easier to carry around. As Ranger1 notes, creativity is all.

Now, having said that, I gotta make sure I have a couple of empty grape juice bottles to decant my wine into...

I find that alcohol is the least important part of having a good time at the Getaway, and I'll bet I'm not alone.

I may not be able to go this year. Edmund and I are talking about a trip to England, and if we do that I'll have to do a passel of overtime if I'm to make the Getaway as well. Edmund gets much more leave than I do, so he will be able to go -- unless work gets immovably in the way of course.

Well, I was pretty good at being sneaky in college. Since I had spent a lot of time in Europe with a legal drinking age of 18, I wasn't about to go back to being a teetotaler for another three years. It's amazing what one can do with a bit of creativity...

Sadly with or without alcohol we will not be getting to the Getaway again. Last year was a one off since I had just been made redundant. If I manage to get a new job I won't be able to take time off (as a teacher can only have school vacations). If Idon't get work then we won't be able to afford to come - oh well maybe when I retire in 2022!

we are sure HOPING to get back to an earlier date! Heat is nice, but Nov. is a bit awkward for some..(Rita & I are into crafts season heavily by that time.) Some of these camps have the best dates scheduled years in advance. (If we want to go back to Prince William Forest park, limit the attendance to about 135, and have no heat, and have to find cooks, I suppose we could ...*grin*)

It's a case of
comfort
time
price
booze
....choose any two.

Well, Giok, I hope you decide to make the scene -- we'd sure love to see you again. Yeah, it's nicer not to have to have to hide the bottles, but we all managed to deal with it for over 35 years before we went to Ramblewood, and even managed to have a pretty good time of it. I think other advantages of the new place will outweigh the need for discretion.

Susan, I believe West River Camp is handicapped-accessible. Any chance you and the Mr. can join us this time?

Problem is, in the Wash DC area, the places that DO allow a bar or 'open' privileges are way too expensive. There are so many rich corporations about that not many camps are willing to settle for the lower end market that we are in, and those which are tend to be State Parks and Boy Scout camps which have a NO alcohol rule....and yes, it is quite evident that the UK does have a bit more 'enlightened' attitude in general. Camp Ramblewood was as interesting exception....
