Hey, I got it in print in the FSGW Newsletter - November 3-5, 2006, at the West River Camp in Edgewater, Maryland.

I also saw this message in another thread, from a Truly Knowledgeable Source:

Seems like some people might be upset at having to choose. Getaway's too far for us during the school year, anyway, but...

It is still not on the FSGW website. Info other than dates, such as cost and registration information would be helpful.

Art - I would suspect it will run about the same as the last few years -

for the full shot, non-member;
all nights and meals
roughly 175 US. - give or take a couple bucks.

Registration usually starts about september - it might run a little later this year since the getaway is later. They still have a summer festival to get through - and their monthly stuff.

*sigh*...we tried. Getting ANY camp we can afford is always a problem...and decent camps are scheduled years in advance. Must be nice...for the camp.

(We could have it in Prince Georges County Forest, like we did when we were...ummm...younger...with NO heat, barely tolerable bathrooms and a couple of gang showers and a limit of about 150 registrants...and having to so kitchen work for 2 hours and plan all our own meals. Maybe in the next couple of years we'll get back to a date we want)

I don't snore so we can share a room - lower bunk here too. I could get into the top one but it's unlikely I will be able to get out.

Yo, Bill -- that was Prince WILLIAM Forest Park. I'd think you'd remember that -- or maybe your name is really George? :<)

And aside from all the other problems with PWFP, They wouldn't confirm reservations till only about 2-3 months beforehand. Makes it hard to plan. And the "bathrooms" were totally INtolerable, IMHO.

We'll keep trying for an October date at West River, and maybe eventually we'll get it.

MMario's right -- registration information will be along in the summer. The date's the important thing right now.

arrrrggghhhh...Nancy! *beating my elderly brain cell to shake the dust off it*...yes..Prince William! (I wondered why I has trouble making that phrase sound right!)

Most of the rooms are just bunks...usually 2 bunks....we are not sure how it will work. If we don't fill the place, we 'might' be able to use a lot of rooms, and allow more folks to have lowers...but I don't have the floor plans and of course, we have no head count yet..

Aw, rats! I have accumulated enough FF miles to pay for my airfare, and I had made a space for the gathering in October, thinking it would be roughly at the same time of year. Since it's in early Nov., and I've already got several bookings in San Diego for that trip, I won't be able to make it unless (doubtful) I can manage to reschedule those.   I'm really disappointed. I was so looking forward to finally going to the Gathering.

I guess you guys are gonna have to have an extra good time to make up for that.

Genie

BTW, what is the weather like in that neck of the woods in early November?

Is it really the same weekend as NOMAD? I surely hope not. Ruth and I (and perhaps the rest of the Gospel Messengers) are seriously considering coming down but if it's the same weekend as NOMAD we would have to reconsider.   NOMAD is very special to us, and I can almost see it out my living room window. It definitely is closer...

Anybody know for sure when NOMAD is? I'll have to check my literature..

I should have said two SETS of bunks in most rooms..(that I saw)...There are small cabins, and also rooms in a main, larger building. I can't remember if there were some dorm style rooms...no doubt Charley Baum will pop by one day soon and clarify a lot of it.

The weather in early Nov. can be anything from 75 F in the daytime to snow. (both are unlikely)..We have often had a warm spell after the first chilly snap, and not had any serious cold until Jan...but this is weather! We should not be surprised to have chilly nights...but we have had those in Oct., which is one reason thewre were so many votes for an all-weather, heated camp.

Getaway weekend has become a high point of my year - and the Welcome and work the FSGW folk put into this weekend are phenomanal. I almost signed up and became a member last year - then decided I almost prefferred to pay the higher fee - since I really can't participate the other 361 days a year - and don't want it to look like I'm just registering to get a price cut.

We do apologize to those for whom the conflict with NOMAD is a problem. We would love to have avoided such conflicts, but it just wasn't possible. Our choices were to stay at Ramblewood (and none of us wanted that) or go for the earliest date West River had available. So there it is. We're looking forward to seeing as many of you as can possibly make it!

I know it is way too early to line up help, but I definitely will volunteer to help again this year, and I'm sure many other 'Catters who can't help with the main work of organizing will also want to do what they can at the event itself. Be sure someone from FSGW starts a thread for volunteering when the time comes to start that kind of planning!

Guess I'll just have to catch you D.C. area folks some other time... sooner rather than later, hopefully.

NOMAD is the North American Music And Dance Festival, Dani. It's held in Connecticut... most recently in New Haven. It is usually a couple weeks one side of the Getaway. I've done a gospel workshop there for many years, and it's a wonderful festival. Hopefully next year they won't be on the same weekend so I can come down to the Getaway... maybe get the Gospel Messengers to come along, too. There's always a good contingent of D.C.ers that come to NOMAD, so we'll miss them, too..

Oops. No Getaway for me this year unless they get that cloning thing figured out between now and November. Like Jerry, I've sung at NOMAD every year for many (15? more?) years, traveling from D.C. for many of them, and now from Maine. It wouldn't be fall for me without participating in that wonderful Connecticut festival. One of my few opportunities every year to see (and hear) Jerry & Ruth & the Messengers, the Patons, the Beans, the 'chucks, bbc, and lots of other folks of whom I'm very fond.

I consider the Get-Away each year, but NOMAD is much closer for me &, as others have mentioned, I cherish the folks I only see once or twice a year. So, if there's a conflict, I need to choose NOMAD. Still, I'll miss those we lose to the Get-Away.

best,

Barbara

Actually, Leo. Jacqui and I discussed a "workshop" dealing with who can give the worst gift. You bring something horrible and thru a lottery system, you win a gift from another participant. What you don't want can always go into the silent auction - one man's treasure is another man's trash.
By the way, we do have a gift for you to be delivered at NEFFA. heh heh

Giok, you just made my day!

I'm trying to find out if there are any accomodations for married couples, (or just couples). I sleep naked and I get up to pee at least once every night, so dorm type bunking is not my cup of tea.

I could bring the motor home, if there is space to moor the damn thing, it's 33 feet long, or, is there a motel near by?

The first Getaway I attended was with Gordon Bok, and all I remember was the mold...

From: Charlie Baum

Sorry about the conflict with NOMAD.

The camp is laid out with 5 houses and 1 retreat center. Each of the 5 houses has eight bedrooms. The retreat center has 10 bedrooms. That's 50 rooms. Each and every room has two lower bunks and two upper bunks. That's 200 beds, 100 lower and 100 upper, EXCEPT that one room is a sextuple--three lower bunks and three uppers. So there are 202 beds-- 101 lower and 101 upper. The committee needs to figure out how to allocate the bedspaces, and how to solve the problem that lower bunks will be at a premium (for those too old to make it into top bunks). The committee also needs to figure out policies for issues of privacy for couples (or individuals) unwilling to share a bedroom with one other couple, especially if we have significantly more than 101 lodgers. (You can send feedback/your 2-cents-worth to me privately either by Max's private messages or special ATSIGN fsgw.org)

All houses have two bathrooms, one for men and one for women (unless the inmates decide to allocate them in other fashion). There's flat ground for mobile trailers (no hook-ups, though), and lots of motels nearby in places like Annapolis and Deale and Chesapeake Beach.

All spaces are heated, which should cut down on/eliminate the mold.

And Kendall, perhaps if you don't have that cup of tea, you will need to pee less in the middle of the night.

--Charlie Baum, FSGW, in a more or less official capacity, except for the snide remark to Kendall at the end, for which I apologize herewith, but I couldn't resist

The new date works better for me since I'll be coming back from a UK tour late October.

I don't really worry about the bunks since I doubt if I'll sleep more than 4 hours a night in mine anyway. And as long as the upper bunks are structurally sound I have no objections to sleeping aloft.

Looking forward to my 2nd Getaway!

Cheerily,

I will then head south, and would appreciate a bunk somewhere en route for the Thursday night.
I MUST have a bottom bunk, and I MUST be able to go pee in the night, sorry folks but we old guys got to go, and when you've got to go you've got to go.

Are there electrical outlets in the rooms? I don't think I will need extra O2 at sea level but may need some at night. I don't have to have electricty for it, but it would probably be less expensive for me and my insurance company to rent a concentrator for at night than use up bottles. We also might look into a nearby motel or rent-an-RV if it isn't too expensive. Anyway had any experience with that? Cost-wise, etc.? Bunks and sharing a room is a bit iffy for us; Rog is another *nudie* and I get up to pee!:-)

I actually got Rog to look at flights online the other night. Getting him away from work is like pulling hens' teeth, but he was put on notice several months ago and this is still looking good for us. (The carrot is we go up north afterwards to see his sister in PA, our dau. and grandtwins in CT, and the rest of his family in NH, as well as Night Owl on the Cape!)

If I remember correctly, there are electrical outlets in all bedrooms. I certainly remember them in the retreat center, and the other houses are new enough that building codes would certainly require them.

Each house and the retreat center, by the way, has a common room (perfect for music making, although we'll designate some quiet-at-night common rooms). There's also the "nature center" and the dining hall, though the dining hall isn't available during meal times or set-up and clean-up periods before and after food.

Kat's O2 concentrator shouldn't be any noisier or more disruptive than a snorer (remembering my Mom's system). Given all the folks who are admitting to sleeping in the nude in this thread alone, perhaps we just need to set up a naturist's cabin? At least "clothing optional" during the wee wee hours of the morning?

So Marion, how the heck do you book time off that far in advance? Are you overprepared for life again? Tsk tsk.

But look, hey, everybody, this date and venue change is AWESOME!!! Cause it removes two of the main obstacles that have kept me away since my only Getaway visit in 2002.

1. The date doesn't conflict with Ontario Council of Folk Festivals conference. Which I have once again sworn to attend (which will be a first). Gotta act locally.

2. You moved to somewhere with HEAT! You can't imagine how happy that makes this sissy Canadian outdoorsy guy. I like the outdoors outside and the indoors warm.

But could you please:
3. remove that Commando in Chief guy? I don't like going that near him. Oh well. I heard his Mouthpiece in Chief quit today and hopefully Rove is next...maybe even Rummy and Cheney...

Damn I think I'm going to make it! The Canadian dollar is way up too...might even offset the price of gas ^^^^^^^

There are second-tier rental places in some areas, with names like "Rent-a-Heap" and "Rent-a-Wreck", that provide perfectly serviceable cars for less money. They're not national chains though.

At the risk of sounding like a tv ad, I have great luck with Enterprise. They have good internet specials.

Thanks, folks. Have revised plans and will be looking into Rent-a-wreck. I have used them before out East. Just did a quick check on Orbitz, (Thanks Fortunato for the addy!) for motels. Looks as though the least expensive is about 13.6 miles away so that should be okay.

For anyone else wanting to research such things, the camp addy is 5100 Chalk Point Road, West River, MD 20778.

Thanks a bunch,

kat

I haven't specifically looked at prices in the DC/Baltimore area, but for car rentals I've usually found the best rates through Travelocity or through Southwest's web site (you can book cars even if you're not flying SW). And I typically wind up either with Alamo or Dollar.
