Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Pauline L Date: 30 Oct 05 - 01:59 AM Please identify yourself. I don't remember your name and I lost my directory. I promised to send you something. Sunday afternoon we went to the porch of the White House (Not GW Bush's White House) to jam. We were Andrew Mackay (?), Sorcha, and the Mystery Woman, who played a wooden flute. MW was from England, and her name might have been Carol. I promised to send MW a copy of one of my CDs of Chris Norman playing his wooden flute beautifully. PM me with your mailing address, and I'll get it to you ASAP. Violin/fiddle and flute sound so good together, and I've wanted to play my fiddle with a flute player for a long time. Thank you for making it happen. |

We both really enjoyed that session playing with you and Sorcha - thank you both so much. PM will follow with contact details Many thanks x |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: jimmyt Date: 30 Oct 05 - 03:12 PM Hello all, I just got back from vacation which I left on 3 days after getaway. It was great go read this entire thread about what was a terrific event. I thought it was just a hoot. I guess there might have been some food issues, but heck, who went for the food or sleeping accomodations? I went for music and fellowship and got my share of both! Congrats to all who planned this. I miss all my new found friends and can't wait to come again. Just wait til you all hear Allan C, Jimmyt, and Ron Davies do some Do-wop in the near future! Maybe we can get Jerry Rasmussen to fill in the harmonies, but I am SURE that KT can make the cut here! We will not be as hard on you as Bobert was in his audition for the Pedestrians KT! And judging from the people mentioned above, we can sure use a cute leadman, er girl! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: KT Date: 30 Oct 05 - 04:31 PM Do-wop!! You're on, Jimmyt!!! Heck,we'll have the whole camp do-wopping next year! There's an abundance of fabulous singers at the Getaway. Let's bring 'em all in!! Even Mr. Blues, himself!! Hope you had a great vacation. Welcome home! KT |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Amos Date: 31 Oct 05 - 09:46 AM Mebbe that's what doo-wop really is --- blues for white chicks. Ya think?? I am sure we can keep a doowop session going for a few hours. I recall Camp Runamuck at JenEllen's -- we had one ran that long and ended up with "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" done DooWop-cum-Motown style. Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Col K Date: 31 Oct 05 - 12:04 PM Finally home after another great trip over the pond. Memories, the music, the friendship, the weather !!!!, the food?. All of these combine together to create a wonderful moment in a year of music. The strength of the Getaway is in the people, from all over the world who come together to make music and to share that music with us all. Thanks from me must go to several people who made my trip so special. Tinker for putting me up twice, Max for a night at Mudcat Central, Sinsull for a week in Maine, Ranger1 for her showing me around, Jerry Rasmussen and Ruth for a nught with them. Also thanks to Terry (Leadfingers) for some transport around. My final thanks must go to the wonderful people of the FSGW for organizing the Getaway. How would we all get together and meet so many wonderful people without the FSGW. I hope that I will be able to get there again sometime in the future poss next year who knows. Many thanks to you all Col |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 31 Oct 05 - 05:57 PM Do-wop singing is an old tradition at the Getaway. I managed to miss this year's session, but I'm not surprised it happened. Many years ago, when the Getaway was at Prince William Forest Park, we always had an unofficial session we called "The B-Lodge Boogie," after the building in which it was held. Jonathan Eberhart and Tom McHenry both knew a LOT of do-wop songs, and Dwayne Thorpe (and where was HE this year??) made a lot of contributions. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Nowadays my son Ken Schatz is the best do-wop singer I know. Learned it from my old 45s... Maybe we oughta put do-wop on the program for next year...? Nancy |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Noreen Date: 31 Oct 05 - 06:38 PM Yes please, Nancy! Any session with Ken in would be wonderful, whatever he was singing :0) |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Allan C. Date: 31 Oct 05 - 07:14 PM Doo-wop is among the few American original folk music styles. I'm thrilled to know there are so many people who are enthusiastic about this musical style. Every time I hear doo-wop I picture a Philadelphia alley with four or five guys warming their hands around a flaming 55 gallon trash barrel and raising their voices in improvised song and harmony. I heard a great song just a couple of days ago describing one such bunch. It recounted how at house parties there were times when nobody could get into the bathroom because the group had fallen in love with the echo and were singing their hearts out in there. I can hardly wait to sing some doo-wop with some of you folks! |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ebbie Date: 31 Oct 05 - 07:56 PM A few months back PBS had a doo wop special. Reminded me of how much I enjoy it. I don't require the choreographed moves though! |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: jimmyt Date: 31 Oct 05 - 08:13 PM I have been performing Do-wop for about 10 years now and it is delightfully mindless entertainment! It is not exactly thought-provoking but if you dig harmony it is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on! I look forward to laying down the bassline next year at Getaway. We need a south Philly guy with a leather jacket and a rat tail comp who can pop off the falsetto part and we will be all set! |

Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ron Davies Date: 31 Oct 05 - 11:41 PM Doo-wop is just THE GREATEST! I bet we could have the whole dining hall belting out a few hours of it any night. On Sunday night I volunteered to lead "Goodnight, Sweetheart" (the Spaniels) but I was told it was too suggestive--- People would just leave and go to bed, and that would be the end of the singing. |
Subject: RE: 2005 Getaway Reflections Here... From: Ron Davies Date: 31 Oct 05 - 11:43 PM KT-- Do you really think we're going to turn you down on any song you want to sing? (Only Bobert would do that). |
