They certainly were! And skarpi, and KT, and Ebbie, and wysiwyg and katlaughing and 'spaw and all the others whose names will occur to me as soon as I post this.

Wonderful that so many people were able to come though. The total was 141 people, about 20 more than last year.

Joe, thank you for the link about Colleen. I can't get the sound files to play, but I suspect Bill can show me the trick of it. I'm especially excited about hearing the version of Queen Jane.

I still love you...especially since you managed to pick up Micca whilst I was abed. I slept 12 hours last night and still feel exhausted. Why can't you people keep your damn coolds to yourselves? WHIIIINE.

Colleen Cleveland is a joy. I love her music. I love her enthusiasm. I loved sharing the stage with her and john Roberts.

Still too soon for me to get into details other than to say that this was a very special getaway and Jeri and Tami were sorely missed.

Anyone who's interested in what folks like Colleen, my late wife Vaughn and I have been doing here in upstate NY all these years, along with a bunch of other amazing public folklorists and tradition-bearers (including recently Mudcatter Dave Ruch - just out with a fine album, BTW), can do no better than to click the link to the "Meet the Masters" homepage. Varick Chittenden, the St. Lawrence valley man who has been the guiding spirit of TAUNY all these years, is the folklorist I want to be when I grow up. Alas, he's a bit younger than I. Ah well...

Wow, what a weekend. I had a great time getting acquainted or reacquainted with so many Mudcatters, not to mention the local FSGW people. There were some very memorable moments in the workshops and concerts, but I thought the highlights were the late night sessions where there was a more intimate feel.

I went down in the hopes of being able to introduce some of my own songs, but not being sure how welcome singer-songwriter material would be. It turned out that my songs were very well received, for which I'm very grateful, and that it was a real pleasure to perform them for such an informed and receptive audience. FWIW, the regional industries song that Janie mentioned can be heard here: I Will Bring You Home; and the cellist song Tinker mentioned is here: What He Could Give.

Charmion of Ottawa very kindly gave me a drive to and from the getaway, so I had good opportunity to get to know her and pick her (very expansive) mind about some points of history. Also, on the way back we spent a night with Mudcatter Peg and her partner, and I had lots of fun playing with her big dog.

Will post more as various specific memories want to announce themselves. Thanks very much to those of you who have posted pictures.

I can only say that Moose Turd Pie sounded better than we looked. It was good to get everybody together for Utah's "Singing Through the Hard Times" - the double CD set by the same name will, as Jacqui says, be out sometime early next year. It's to early to give all the details, but hopefully we'll be able to make some more definitive announcement soon. Since Kendall, Jacqui and I are the primary organizers, you can be assured that all details will be shared with Mudcat.

Geeta and I spent a lot of time running after Kiran, which was fun but exhausting! He loved the music, and during the Saturday night concert kept running outside to look at boats, cars and the moon, and then saying "More music!" and running back in. He did wake up early, though - about 4:30 - so I took him on a walk and found Elizabeth Laprelle, Darriel Day and Julia Friend still in the retreat center trading songs. (Lisa Null got up and joined us, too.)

One side effect of leading a lot of workshops AND running after Kiran was that I didn't feel like I had time to socialize as much as I would have liked. But it was still wonderful to see everyone, even if hastily.

I didn't take very many - too busy having fun and must thank Kendall and Claire for taking over the camera when I was busy.

The photos I took at the Blues Session were with Elena's camera so we will have to wait for those.

We got back yesterday after an appointment with Kendall's surgeon, who is very pleased with his progress. Right now I'm still processing the weekend in what is left of my brain and will post my comments once recovery is a little further on.

I really appreciate the captions, given that I'm terrible at learning names and I only knew about 20 people to begin with. Lyrics are not a problem for me but those names!

Dennis Cook did his usual fine job of doing sound for the evening concerts. It's a pleasure to work with someone like him who understands the music with regard to sound set-up, and is patient with their volunteer help.

Art, I was also early to bed, although more like 1 am than midnight.

I especially liked the late session with Dick Swain in the Retreat Center Saturday night, and I'm sure it got even better after I retired.

Update: I have video of almost all of the Sunday night concert. (I didn't catch the beginning of Micca's wonderful Ravens song, so I skipped recording it, but he and I seemed to agree that we should let him 'finish' the song before we introduce it to the world via videotape. I also didn't get in recording position quick enough to catch the beginning of Claire's song, but I got most of it.)

I'm editing the clips, as much as feasible, to separate songs/acts.

I also got a lot of the Doo Wop workshop and parts of Bobert's Blues Band.

I did not get set up in recording position Saturday night before the concert started, so, sad to say, I didn't get most of it. But next year I'll make sure I've cleared out a few dozen gb on my hard drive and also mastered the technique of saving stuff to DVD, so I should be able to video with greater abandon.   (All you people who pooh-pooh Macs should take a gander at the new iPods and MacBooks and their easy-peasy videoing capabilities. Neener - neener.)

I'll also share some stills from the videos.

Rita, no offense taken at your 'scolding'. The Getaway was very family friendly and, well, tame. That doesn't mean we didn't let our respective muses loose (and a loose muse is a heckuva lot more benign and inspirational than, say, a loose moose).   But should any non-Mudcatters be lurking (and you are most welcome, friends!), please be advised that the stories told in Song Challenges! and other folk songs should never be confused with historical documents. :)

Good photos, mostly -- sometimes a photo of an unaccompanied singer looks like someone yawning, just standing there with their mouth open -- but what can you do about that?

I ended up "backing up" to the main site -- were all those photos yours, Mr. Devil? If so, I wish you had gotten some good shots of my band's appearance at the Ft. McHenry Defender's Day celebrations. I looked through both of the 2007 sets of such photos, but nothing of our musical appearance. Sigh.

And Rita, a huge THANKS to you, and Charlie, and Bill D, and Dean, and everyone who works so hard to make this event such a wonderful experience. I don't know of a friendlier, more interesting group of people than the FSGW folks. And you couldn't find a more beautiful spot to hold forth.
I really enjoyed the Dick Rodgers tribute session. The stories, songs, and remembrances were both funny and touching. Not really knowing Dick well, I felt I came to know him through the conversation among his friends.
I also wanted to thank Kendall and Jacqui for their splendid performance of the Masefield poem, and the beautiful song that followed.
Barry Finn as well, for the gusto and heartfelt, well, volume of his sea chanties. Especially Friday night when his voice was crystal clear.
My appreciation to Annie and Julia for letting me accompany them in some old time fiddle tunes while the sun painted Chesapeake Bay in hues of pink and red.
To Micca for being the jolliest and brightest animated garden gnome I have ever met.
To Peter for being as honest and funny in person as he is in this forum.
To Mick for being so kind as to, when I requested he play John O'Dreams to help lull me off to bed and complimented him on his relaxing voice, play Roddy McCorley at full volume.
To Amos and Janie for being as good friends for three days a year as most that I have for 365.
To all of you and those I didn't mention but remember well, a sincere thanks, and may the Moon of Peace light your way until we meet again.

Yeah Janie I know you're right, thank you. The one thing I do regret is that there's no cute little happy-face icon (that I know of)to show that one is exaggerating for effect in using the expression "sordid details."

It's early yet, more pictures may well show up. Certainly more memories will surface once we are over the shock of not being at the Getaway.

Bearing in mind that almost the entire UK Folk Scene is Pub Based , the 'Dry' aspect of West River is NO problem , at least as far as I am concerned . At a 'home' weekend festival I am as happy as anyone to spend time (And Money) at a session in the Beer Tent . The fact that there was NO Beer Tent did not in the least detract from the enjoyment I had , making music with such a wonderful group of friends
   The Blues Bash in the Peace Cabin was an example of people getting high on Music and Companionship , NO need for ANY artificial Stimulants at all .

Well, I don't think there was anything offensive in my song, do you? In fact, I had planned on singing it next year at the Getaway.

And as for drinking, I don't recall anyone drinking in my presence. That doesn't mean they didn't have a fifth of Old Slapentickle stashed in their Rav 4. Oh no, I believe everyone conducted themselves in a manner both fitting and proper, considering the circumstances. As to the Blues Jamboree, everybody was actually DANCING and SINGING and LAUGHING, activities which I believe even Methodists condone, and one in which I will continue to indulge with enthusiasm until I physically can't.

No one hurt or insulted anyone, no one damaged anything, everyone had fun, no one that I saw was out of control or dangerous, and people were both courteous and kind to one another. Those are the important things in my mind. Many of us who had a ton of fun at the Peace Lodge until 5 am, were in the Gospel Sing at 10:30 am singing Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb, and back at the rowdy fun in Bobert's Blues Session at 3 pm.

As the happy stall-occupier in Mick's story said, "Hallelujah!"

Genie, there was a 're-cap' blues memorializing the event at the end of the blues jam.

As for some of the footage .... well I'm definately on the limited distribution side (hmmmm... )

Check this site Yes DVD and see if they have a location near you. It's a pretty painless process if you can burn it on a CD they will clean it up and I'll happily pay for a copy. And if you then destroy the original....

As for uplifting moments, I'd add Marion's song about the The cellist of Sarajevo it was a shining moment at the concert Saturday night. Girl, both your song writing and delivery have grown amazingly. It was good to see you again.

Well, on the more ordinary front, I must confess that have never so enjoyed such a rich array of traditional music, presented by such fine, friendly, God-fearing folks from every walk of life, and their orderly, considerate manners of presentation. Each song well sung, well-researched, with interesting hyshistorical footnotes, in good voice, and accompanied by considerable musical acumen. Folks, in the past the managers of whatever camp we were in have occasionally enjoyed visiting the post-Getaway threads. You might keep that in mind as you share your wilder experiences. And, that this is a Methodist camp. Much time was spent in finding it, some of us like it very much, and we want to continue to be welcome there.

In the past people sometimes read post-Getaway threads and decided it sounded ... well ... like a weekend of wild behavior and drunkenness. It's not!!! It's almost heaven, it's a family weekend, and I don't want people to think differently. And even if it's tempting late in the wee hours to be somewhat uninhibited and irreverent, not only would I prefer not to know the sordid details, I'd definitely prefer that the whole world not know them.

So sorry to hear Susette was in so much pain and that both of you had to miss so much of the Getaway, but I'm relieved the problem has passed.   (Now that's a pun worthy of my gracious host, Severn.) I do hope both of you are well and recovered from that ordeal now.
