I think the werewolf song (or shapechanger, the species of beast is left to the imagination) was from Sue Mathieu. I understand that she may be recording some of her repertoire of ballads. That will be a CD worth looking for.

The food was definitely less than 2nd rate, but I didn't get such a negative feeling about the director. There were rules. He was obliged to tell us about them, so I didn't take it amiss.

As fir the food, I think Sgt. Billy Ballbuster was in charge of that, as well as being the rule guy... Bet he was the one who locked me outta the pool, too... Glad we're rumblin' on past Camp Tumbleweed next year...

Ahhhh, as fir my gardenin' buddy, Jeri, I'm sorry but I really wanted to spend some time with you... Seems I was always headed somewhere, plus had both a workshop and an mini-cocert to do and I kept seein' you thinkin' that Sunday night I'd finally be able to share some gardenin' stories, then I calll the P-Vine and she is sick as a dog, so I beat feet home to make her tea...

Sorry, Jeri... I really wanted to have some time wid ya... Sniff...

Sho nuff did...

I agree that the food was, shall we say, uninspired? I suspect that if the director and crew had made an effort to get us on his side we would have been more helpful to him and them. Ya gets what ya sends out.

Sorry I wasn't really in top form....felt like crap most of the w/e, had a HORRID headache Sat eve so went to bed about 7 PM or so. Also I was distracted by 'worries' that I should have been able to leave at home but couldn't.

Personally, I thought the food was lousy, the entire camp needs major maintenance, the director is a jerk, and some of you left really horrible messes in the dining hall.

Sorry, but I come from the Take only memories, leave only footprints school, and IMO, we left a LOT more than that. Just as well that the Getaway is planning to find a new venue, because after the mess I saw in the Dining Hall after meals and on Monday, they might not want us back.

Janie-

So is "Cranedriver" really Andrew McKay, the singersongwriter and concertina player from Swansea? I wasn't aware of his Mudcat name. And Sussex Carole is his fiancee, or are they already married?

Anyway, they were one of my favorite couples that sang last weekend.

Bill D-

Who is the bearded fellow in the blue-checkered shirt, near the front on the right inside aisle? He plays guitar and was part of our late night gang in the cabin earl-lye Sunday morning. He's almost as old as me.

Ebbie, here are the narrative and lyrics in English and horrible Portuguese. I can't write Portuguese well enough to do it justice. So here it is minus the proper accent marks and possibly misspelled:

Off the north coast of Brazil there's an extensive fishing trade. Each day men go out in log boats to catch a fish known as Curimao in nets they throw by hand. They aren't always successful in catching this huge fish; but are nearly as glad to bring in one a little smaller known as Lambai.

Curimao

Vamos chamar o vento
Vamos chamar o vento
Oo-oo-oo

Vento que da na vela
Vela que leva a o barco
Barco que leva o gente
Gente que leva o peixe
E peixe que da dineiro
Curimao

Chorus:
Curimao hey Curimao ou Lambai
Curimao hey Curimao ou Lambai
Hey Curimao hey Curimao ou Lambai
Hey Curimao hey Curimao ou Lambai
Curimao

Come let us call the wind
Come let us call the wind
Oo-oo-oo

Wind come and fill the mainsail
Mainsail make my boat go
Boat go and carry my brothers
Brothers fish the waters
And waters bring us good fortune!
Curimao

Chorus

This year, just about every time I thought I was talking to someone who was strictly FSGW and not at all Mudcat, I would then discover that I was talking to a Mudcatter without realizing it. I found out, for instance, that I have seen PaulineL at every Getaway I've attended, and just never connected the person with the screen name. There were quite a few people I saw, and some I spoke with, whose names I never learned and I have no way of knowing if they were just FSGW, just Mudcat, or if they were both. I see this as a good thing. I think it shows that the line of separation between FSGW people and Mudcatters is very insubstantial.

I am a bit dismayed to see quite a few names of Mudcatters (and/or Mudcat spouses) who were there, but whom I somehow missed getting a chance to meet.

You are right about the Foreign language songs. I knew Skarpi would be there so would hear Icelandic, and expected French and Spanish, and even those songs were from Brazil and Vera Cruz (with the typical quaver); also Italian, an older Slavik language, two different Hebrew rounds, Irish Gaelic (from two different singers; I was going to try one myself but the circle was large and fortunately I passed; two people would have spotted the fluffs), I think a German and I do not recall what else but I know there were more.
Also, who sang the heartstopping werewolf song near the start of the SpookyGrim? What was it? Wow.
And the woman who was not yet familiar with "On Ilkla Moor" was fun to watch; what a treat to see someone hear something good for the first time! I learned it as a simple children's song and the impromptu chorale was amazing.
I never would have thought string bass could sound so good. (Gutbucketeer? I can't say I have either 'Cat or other names down)
Another great moment was when someone at the Foreign Language circle sang a song South American fishermen use to call up the wind, and out of nowhere a brisk breeze sent the trees waving and the barn door slamming.

Um, excuse me, but I, too, mentioned the sterling qualities of an FSGW person -- Mia Boynton -- who doesn't even own a computer (let alone waste her time posting here), but obviously fills every spare minute with sturdy practising 'cause she's one fine musician.

It was I who led the song that had the background of "Here we come. There we go." That was for the workshop for "songs you learned from someone else."

The "foreign songs" workshop was fabulous! Skarpi did a couple of great songs - one in Icelandic and I think the other was Norwegian. If memory serves, Charlie Baum sang in a language I had never heard of. The variety of languages represented there was amazingly diverse.

Two out of a million dazzling moments: hearing Jeri's "WhenI Go", which she (amzing gal that she is) snatched off the radio and would not let escape until she owned it; and discovering from El Greko that the simplest sadnesses are sometimes the most overwhelming; I joined about thirty others in diving for the Kleenex by the time he finished his Christmas song for a departed mother. I swear this big, impressive hunk of a man has a heart of soft spun gold. Then there was the amazing performances from Wales which had me gobsmacked as well, and...the first five minutes was another miracle. I finally found this Hellangone back o'beyond after arriving at BWI hours late and feeling my way through the back-woods darkness on dwindling roads and marginal certainties. I was thrashed but excited to be there. I climbed down from my rental car and turned to see a figure looming up in the shadows. It was the man I had come so far to see more than any other single man, the Ole Skippuh himself.

I could not have started things on a better reception than that greeting in the shadows from ole Kendall his own self.

It went from new heights to newer heights thereafter.

I wish I could tell you-all how much it meant to me, but, in a rare and amazing Murphy Moment, I have to confess that words fail me. SNifff.

The folks who did the sound for the concerts also did a wonderful job. Those one-song-each shows can be nightmares of sound changes.
I don't know really who was FSGW and who was 'Cat though I know many are both. What an amazing deal we 'Catters have though that FSGW organizes this event and opens it to us! How do I volunteer to help from here?

Janie, you're right, I remember now. My memory is a bit weird at best, but I can remember things (sometimes) when somebody reminds me....

Jeri, Merle couldn't make it after all. (Sob). She and Carly both sang at my very first Getaway (1977, maybe?) and I was -- gobsmacked? -- by their beautiful singing.

'Twas maybe Crane Driver and Sussex Carol?

This just dawned on my when I went over my schedule: was Merle Roesler there? The Songwriters Showcase went straight into Scottish Songs without Merle's mini-concert, and I remember a button lying on the check-in table when I was leaving.

Skarpi surprised me as well. I thought he'd be good, but he was better than that. Truly a pro with a really great voice. Barry Finn, in full voice on a good day can stip paint at 50 paces if he has to. He did just fine at the Getaway - nobody needed paint stripped.

I have so many more bright moments to share but right now I want to mention Hunter and Peggy, FSGWers- I would have loved to talk longer with them. There wasn't time.

The Getaway does have several serious flaws. Cloning would take care of just about all of them.

(I recollect that KT was put in charge of the Cloning issue. I suspect she just didn't have enough time.)

I have barely slowed down this last few days, since we still have guests (Noreen & Stewart) and have not even finished unloading the van yet! I have downloaded pics, but have not edited and sorted them, so I will be posting many images that will jog memories ("oh, yeah! I remember her/him....who was that?" .I took a bunch of crowd shots at the concerts, too so I may have at least snaps of 'almost' everyone.

The line is beginning to blur between "Mudcatters" (which I guess means anyone who has posted once..*grin*), local folks who NEVER post,, (like Hunter, who has been at every gospel sing since time immemorial), non-local folks who never post, but who have been at Getaways longer than I have...(like Keith Baldwin, who started things off with "Hoboes & Trains" and added a song to MANY sings)....I will identify them as I post pics.

Since I have now attended 28 consecutive Getaways..(not nearly as many as Dick Greenhaus and SongBob and a few others), my mind blurs sometimes, and names escape me....but you all can help if I fail to put names to all the pics!

I am still sorting out my feelings of awe and camaraderie at some of what I saw and people I met....and since I was overwhelmed with setting up my wood display too, I was often not at all of the music I wanted to hear. (thank you ALL who made nice comments [and especially those who took something home..*happy smile*)

so....here are 4 pics of the audience Sat night....see how many you can pick out...many more to come

Spot-Lit moments- so many, so many-

Walking through the camp across the grass from building to building and having music accompany me from one spot to another, now over here, then over there, then over there, then over there… I felt my ears turning and pointing like those of a donkey as I walked.

The Harmonies Workshop- being blown away by so many voices. Mia's, Jeri's, Ron's, the lady who likes Ginny Hawker's songs and sings them so beautifully, Charley Baum's voice and benign presence,..

"Here We Go, There We Go"- who did that song? Loved it and its orchestration.

Skarpi- so totally different from what I expected, even though I was overjoyed at the prospect of meeting him. So amazingly good and satisfying, he made the world manageably smaller. (Did anyone besides me cry in response to his Elvis Presley song?)

Bobert- Quite apart from his persona, he has a wonderfully expressive voice and impeccable rhythm in his music. I have always said that the blues depresses me- but I was exhilarated and energized by his blues workshop. As the songs circled the group, each one's blues style and approach was so different I was immersed in it. As the Beaubear himself says, singing the blues is celebratory, an affirmation of the spirit. Thanks for showing me that.

Chance (Fortunato) and Susette- I love them. They sing the songs I grew up with and take them to another level. And Susette- have you heard her sing Carter Family??

TJ O'Malley- like Chance an impeccable pro. He does blues too. And he has nice legs too. (Don't take it too personally, TJ- in Juneau when a man goes 'round in shorts his legs beam their whiteness to all and sundry, displaying plucked chicken more than comfort.)

Barry Finn- I finally got to hear him sing and a treat it was. I do understand, Barry, that your voice is not yet at 100% but your 80% is eminently rich.

Ron Davies- his mellow viola makes me absolutely melt into puddles. And his voice- the man knows his music.

There are so many, so many…

It's easy enough to remember the names of Mudcatters who attended the Getaway because they post here and are constantly in our faces. (NTTAWWT) If I can't remember someone's name, I can usually remember somewhere they posted and look it up. Perhaps if we had a way to identify those and look up the names of those who don't ever read or post on Mucat it would help keep them separate in our minds. (And Ron Davies posts A LOT.)

Ferrara, the
Buzzantine Hymn workshop (George 'El Geeko' Papavgeris) and the Harmonies workshop (Charlie Baum & Mia Boynton) were my favorites. I'm a harmony freak though. Good to see Colleen Cleveland again, although I missed her mini-concert because I was Byzy.

William Penn was Anglo Irish, as are the Uilleann Pipes ( sorry my Celtic Brothers and Sisters... ) the pipes were (and are) so expensive that in the old days it took an anglo Irish patron to afford them, and so our lot made up a lot of the early pipers (Merrily Kissed the Quaker... a few Irish Tunes named after the Irish Quaker crowd as well!!! ) Well, and all we Quakers are preachers :) ( we have no clergy )
Much love and thanks to all, see you all soon, I hope and do go to Flickr and check out, so far 52 photos of the weekend!

Home, knackered and dazed, but so, so happy! From the pre-Getaway visit to Washington and that lovely evening at Chance and Suzette's to the post-Getaway session at Mudcat Central (big thanks, Max!) and our visits to the Amish country (thanks again Max) and to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia (thanks Bobert and yes, we did sing THAT song and do THAT dance with Vanessa at the top), the whole trip has had a magical quality, with the main ingredients being provided of course by the Getaway itself.

Some snapshots, in no order:

- That late night impromptu jam in front of the restaurant building.
- Janice's rendition of "Rubber Ducky".
- Bobert's mini-concert (why "mini"? Vanessa dna I would have preferred a "maxi")
- The faces of some of the Byzantine Babes when they realised that they were "getting it"...
- Barry Finn's singing
- InOBU's singing and playing of the pipes
- Noreen's song at the Saturday night concert
- Charlie Noble's singing at the sessions and in that cabin Saturday night
- The "Sixteen Stone" song...
- The Morse couple on stage
- Micca's adoration in song of that blasted puppy
- Amos in all his aspects and at all times
- Jim on his gutbucket
- Giok's singing and company
- Skarpi's Saturday night song
- Talking with Khatt and ColK
- Leadfingers playing jazz and ragtime whistle
- Teresa's energy and voice
- Maryrrf's singing
- Ebbie's infectious smile
- Charmion's singing and permanent smile
- CET's singing and THAT kilt (nice knees, Edmund!)
- KT's voice, charm and songs
- MMario's songs (never heard him before, was gobsmacked)
- Charlie Baum's singing, especially that Bulgarian song in duet
- Big Mick's and Jeri's faces after that Christmas song (it's why I write the buggers, after all!)
- But most of all Vanessa's face throughout that weekend

Shit, I know I have forgotten many, but I hope my addled brain will be forgiven its misfirings.

By the way, La Inglesa has now been renamed "Nessie" (her own preferred nickname) and will no doubt be adding her own impressions to this thread later.

Back to reality now... Or is it?

David Scheim on harp, Lucy Goldberg sings with him. (So do lots of us whenever we can get the chance. He can accompany almost anything.)

Darriel's girlfriend is Kat Clark. She was also setting up sound for the Saturday concert. First time she's ever done it, and Dennis said she did a fine job. Her mom, Sue Clark, is the lady who co-led the Sunday gospel with Lisa Null. And Sue and Kat Clark sang a duet in the Saturday concert.

Will be happy to fill in more info on the various FSGW people, that may be a good way to help us know each other better.

Susan Hills is the tall dark haired lady who plays clarinet in the jams, especially the Country & Western.

Mary Jo and Richard Molineaux were the couple in the matching sunburst clothing. They are the folks who inspired the waltz jam, because they love the Getaway but can't stand to go through an entire weekend without doing at least a little dancing.

My problem is that though I know, enjoy and appreciate - I have trouble putting names with the *FACES* I know - missed several FSGW people I've seen previous years - enjoyed songs from several others I recognize but haven't yet pinned a name to the faces; and then of course many people I think of primarily as FSGW because I don't interact with them much on the mudcat or they joined AFTER I met them at Getaway. Or Darielle Day- whom I met through Mudcat but was a "FSGW Baby" and who I also connect with through Ren-faire- his girlfriend - whose name I never did catch. It's a bit easier with mudcats but even there - heck - I mistook Amos for Chance Shiver (Chance and Suzette - two more who I think of as FSGW - though you get that mudcat connection again)

There is a knitting sub-culture that runs under some of the music as well *grin*

Dave (?) with the harp and Judy (?) (I told you I was horrible with names) whom I enjoy singly and together whenever I get to hear them.

Mary, there have been mentions of Judy Cook and Ron Davies, (who sometimes post here but are 95% FSGW and 5% Mudcat, they post very, very seldom ... even less often than you do these days) and several posts about Mia Boynton, for starters. I think I have noticed others but my memory is so slippery that I can't name them. ... and Sue Mathieu, who co-led Grim, Bloodthirsty, etc.

The thing is that lots of people in FSGW who started as non-Mudcatters have learned about it via the Getaway and so are now registered on Mudcat. Dual citizenship? This year I do feel, in fact, that I'm hearing a lot more about the people who aren't on Mudcat or are very little known there.

I would like to hear (read) more stories about workshops that I missed. For instance Bobert was pretty happy after his concert and told me a bit about it, but I would like to hear other folks' descriptions of it.

And I would especially like to hear more about the Harmonies workshop, and what it was like to learn a Byzantine hymn. BTW Sue Mathieu also sings Byzantine hymns! She sings in a Russian Orthodox church and it's a fine thing to hear her do liturgical music.

This was a fun Getaway for us, 'though George and I were only day-tripping on Saturday and missed out on the late night singing. However, reading this thread, one would get the impression that for the most part, the only folks worth mentioning are fellow Mudcatters. As a Curmudgeon-In-Training, I'd like to ask all of you swapping memories and admiring each other's performances to think back, and mention ONE non-Mudcat person that you got to know or whose musical talents impressed you. For instance, one of the stand-out moments of the Saturday night concert for me was TJ and Julie O'Malley's exquisite slack key guitar duet. Surely there were some FSGW folks (in addition to Janice Cole's Rubber Ducky) who made this Getaway fun and interesting for you...

Also not on the list are Bat Goddess, curmudgeon and Sorcha (who had a really gorgeous cloak).

Mick, you done good with your Mudcat list but somehow missed Naemanson and Barry Finn, Cummagon, Bat Goddess, Ken Schatz and maybe a few dozen more!

My only regret is I missed the cloning workshop and therefore wasn't able to attend some of the other workshops that were happening simultaneously. I do like to sing Southern Appalachian as well as nautical songs, not to mention drinking songs and parodies of all above. And I actually slept 3 to 4 hours Sunday morning and probably missed some of the best unscheduled music. Unfortunately my right arm cramps up now if I try to jam along with others on my banjo for more than a couple of tunes; it's a byproduct of 10 years of abuse playing with a contradance band. Still, I do admire others who continued to flame on in amazing fashion.

I was really delighted to get to know a few fine singers a whole lot better. That includes Barry Finn and his wife Justine who van-pooled with me, Andrew McKay from Swansea who is both a fine nautical songwriter and singer, Skarpi as a singer and guitarist, George Papavgeris who exceeded in my opinion the glowing reports on Mudcat (I've ordered ALL his CD's) as a good person as well as a fine singer and songwriter, some of the Shellbacks and I'm not even sure if I ever figured out the entire membership represented, and Ken Schatz who I shared the Shanties Workshop with.

It was wonderful to have some more time with Brett and Wakana, but I bet they're looking forward to getting home to Guam after their months of travel.

For me the ideal workshop is a dozen or so people who get to sing several rounds of songs and really interact with one another. The larger workshops unfortunately restrict one to leading one song, but on the positive side you get to sing along with a much greater variety of singers. This is not a critique of how Getaway workshops functioned, but more of a personal preference if it were possible or if I had a choice.

And the party continues this Friday at the Press Room and Saturday at Sinsull's with Micca, Catsfiddle and maybe a Shellback or two.

Thanks again to the FSGW for hosting this wonderful weekend. You're all invited to Maine to sing and dine on lobster any time you wish!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

A Few photos

There are a few photos here that I've been able to edit. I've got more but no more time. Micca and the champagne flutes are represented and I'll try to get a close up of a couple later. There are also a couple of picture of Mick in the boudoir with Koko... no comment on those.... see what you think.

dagnabit - a nice long post just vanished into the ether!

yes - I do several of Mike's songs - sang 'Back in the clydesdale' a couple of times that I remember - and did 'first Kill' at least once over the weekend. [I take liberties with the words of 'Back in the Clydsedales - but there weren't no yuppies in 1585 - and heck, I had to invent a whole new history for Budwieser, but when you have a good song, what's a few historical facts!] [besides - he changed the lyrics after I got my copy] [I do a few more of his as well - always steal borrow from the best!]

Celtaddict - I didn't say the ladies (as in people of the female persuasion) ignored me - I said the "ladies" - as in those who organized Koko and Mick's nuptials - let me off lightly....

Wedding pictures were there - I just never had a chance to fire up the computater and show them to anyone. I think I slept more then I ever have at a getaway - counting the afternoon nap I took I think I got a total of 16 hours from friday through to monday. Can't believe I missed that much!

There were more Mudcatters but right now I can only think of two:

Lorraine
Judy Cook
Gorgeous Gary
Linda Goodman (or is she in Mick's list?)

Okay, so I can't count.

Speaking of which (Mudcatters), I have to agree with Dani that this year we were ONE group in almost every way. It was all people. Music people.

There are so many people and so many musical interests that you can expect various groups to go off by themselves, that has always happened. But there was also a very solid core of musicians who stayed in the center of things, so to speak. The singing in the dining room and TV rooms was dynamite all weekend, and people got to enjoy one another's unique contributions and come to appreciate one another's unique talents.

One thing that I noticed this year even more than usual, was the visual richness of the Getaway. It's always been fun and interesting to see the clothing and accessories that people choose to wear but I think most of you would agree that the variety this year (even without the Ladies of the Club's late-night variety act) was stunning.

Lorcan's Quaker Preacher clothing, including the cloak, was possibly the most dramatic, especially because of the incongruity of seeing him in it while playing the pipes. Geoff the Duck's clothing was the most startling IMO. I love it Geoff. Janice Cole used to bring feather boas and wear different ones all weekend to go with her torch songs (such as Rubber Ducky....). I miss them. There was a grand assortment of hats this year. And I'm hoping to put up a photo taken by Dave Diamond of the Molineaux wearing two of the brightest tie-died outfits I've ever seen.

The energy that people put into getting the work done was very much appreciated, especially the Silent Auction (Janie, Jacqui, Tinker, who else?) and the Friday night potluck cleanup. I went to bed early, later heard that many hands made light work of the potluck cleanup. But my image is of Janie at about 10:30 PM, so tired she looked dazed, carefully figuring out what to do with each bowl of leftover food, one at a time, and very slowly carrying them to their ultimate destination (fridge or circular file). I sent several people over there to help her but was too whacked out myself to assist in any more material way.

Sinsull, can you post the story of Micca and the champagne glasses, the way you told it to me? And if any of them remain unbroken, can someone post a photo?

Rita
