Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Maryrrf Date: 27 Oct 06 - 08:59 AM Is anything besides food needed for the Friday potluck? I may not have time to prepare anything so whatever I bring may very well be storebought - if paper plates, cups, beverages, etc are needed I could bring some. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Charlie Baum Date: 27 Oct 06 - 09:11 AM Storebought should be fine for the Potluck--lots of us do that. Years ago, I attended a potluck evening dinner and everyone was to bring something their mother would have made. I went out and bought a box of Entenmann's doughnuts--because that's what my mother would have done. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: artbrooks Date: 27 Oct 06 - 09:14 AM How about chips and gen-u-wine New Mexico salsa? |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Nancy King Date: 27 Oct 06 - 11:00 AM We're assuming everyone will bring something (store-bought or otherwise) for the Friday night potluck -- right? What Carly is referring to is something easy to put out for the midnight snack on Saturday, which the camp will not be providing. I'm going to be picking up the paper goods tomorrow, and after I do that we'll know how much is left in the budget. We thought maybe someone with a Costco membership or somesuch could pick up a whole bunch of cookies or fruit or other nibbles (for 140...) which won't be a big deal to put out for the snack. Do let Carly know by PM if you can help with this. Yikes! Only a week to go... |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 27 Oct 06 - 04:24 PM If you'd like to help with Saturday or Sunday midnight snack, or with Friday potluck clean-up, the best thing to do is PM Carly. She is experienced at organizing this kind of thing and offerd to co-ordinate it. We used to have volunteer sign-up sheets and everyone helped for a couple of hours in the kitchen. Midnight snacks were one of the jobs. In recent years the camps have handled it, but this year it's up to us. It will take several people, since the same people shouldn't have to shop, set out food and do clean-up. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 27 Oct 06 - 06:30 PM IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MEALS Well it's always a challenge to get used to a new camp, and this year is no exception. This year the meal procedure is quite different from the buffet-style meals we've been having. The actual meal times will be on the final schedule grids, probably tomorrow. Here is the thing you need to keep in mind: The camp is allowing only 30 minutes for serving food at each meal. After that we can use the dining room for about another half hour, then have to leave and let the kitchen staff clean up. We'll have access to the dining hall at other times, including evenings and late-night, and have even scheduled some workshops there. But do either plan to be on time for meals, or have someone pick up something for you if you really have to be late. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: GUEST,Janie Date: 27 Oct 06 - 08:10 PM Will beverages (coffee, tea, water) be available throughout the day, or should I bring bottled water, a coffee pot and half-and-half with me? Janie the h2o and caffeine junkie |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Bill D Date: 27 Oct 06 - 08:24 PM Coffee, Tea...etc..WILL be available...We may have to make it beyond meal times, but they leave makings handy. There are actually coffee pots & microwaves in the cabins. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 28 Oct 06 - 03:03 PM We'll need to let them know whether we want coffee supplies in all of the cabins/lodges. We'll also have to make sure the coffee pots are refilled, turned off, etc. Some of you may also want to bring your favorite kind of coffee though. I dont' think there is hot water for tea in the cabins but I think there will be some in the dining hall and the retreat center. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 30 Oct 06 - 08:44 PM Well we have made some changes to the schedule grids, to accommodate all kinds of needs & problems including different meal times than at Ramblewood. I'll get them up tomorrow, or late tonight. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 30 Oct 06 - 11:53 PM Okay, here is the last-and-final version of the schedule grids (may it be so!) We had good reasons for making these changes and gave it many hours of thought. Still, it's a "given" that every change inconveniences and frustrates someone who was perfectly happy before the change! -- But with luck this will be better in lots of ways for most people. The Workshop List is now organized by days, and has extra information about each workshop.

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Lin in Kansas Date: 30 Oct 06 - 11:56 PM Oh boy-- I've been reading these threads with great envy for the last few years. Now I am going to be forced to do some serious pleading, begging, and penny-saving to convince John we really do HAVE to go next year! A workshop on squeezeboxes!!!! Doo Wop!!!! Old Timey!!!! Country!!!! What bounty! What fun! Can't wait to read the FSGW Debriefing afterwards. Hope your weather's lovely and everybody manages without any sleep (unnecessary, right?). I am absolutely pea-green with envy. (Lest I give the wrong impression, John would also like to be there. It's just that we can't miss Walnut Valley, and affording TWO festivals in the space of two months...well, it could be tricky! Cloning workshop, you said??) Lin |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Susan of DT Date: 31 Oct 06 - 07:52 AM Can food for the potluck be heated/cooked/microwaved there? Different sites have had different kitchen rules. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Bill D Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:01 PM Susan..there is a mini-kitchen..(like you'd find in a church) in the retreat center. So we can heat stuff and wash our own pots & pans. There are also microwaves...(even in the cabins). We can lay out stuff and eat in the dining hall, but we'll have to carry things back & forth if they need to be heated. (Only a very short walk)...Then we'll need to clean up after ourselves before we all quit for the night. So...if everyone takes responsibility for "dealing with what you bring", it should be fine. It's 'different', but workable. (The last 5 years we didn't have any place to wash dishes, and that was awkward.) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:15 PM This also means that if you bring lots of potluck, you can re-heat it for yourself or for the group at midnight snack time. Just remember it all has to be carried to the dining hall, and carried back later. We will need lots of help on that. In addition, we'd like to have volunteers to take charge of the potluck or midnight snack activities each night, so that we (Carly, Nancy, Charlie and I) can finally sit back and enjoy ourselves. :-) We have a volunteer to be in charge for Saturday, now need Friday and Sunday. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Janie Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:51 PM Come on Catter's, let us see some volunteers. THE FSGW folks work really hard to make this event, which we love so dearly, happen. Much of the work falls on a few people, and happens long before we begin to drive up on Friday night. It would be great if those who did the bulk of the work have a chance to relax and enjoy themselves. If lots of people volunteer, then no one has to work too hard. If you have not yet volunteered to help with something, pm Carly and get yourself signed up. They have already let us know they need help. Lets not make them run us down at the Getaway to say what they need help with. Jacqui, Sinsull, Tinker and I have volunteered to run the silent auction. If no one else steps up to take a lead volunteer roll for Friday pot luck or Sunday night snack, I will do so (but boy will I be muttering under my breath at those who take full advantage of the fun without contributing to helping it happen and run smoothly.) You don't want me muttering, do you? When Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy Janie BTW--men can also volunteer |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: MMario Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:55 PM dagnabit Janie - you weren't suppossed to tell anyone that! |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Bill D Date: 31 Oct 06 - 01:04 PM since a lot of good potential volunteers don't read this everyday, I wouldn't worry. It 'shouldn't' be difficult to recruit a couple folks during arrival, if we don't get 'em right here...It won't be a terribly complicated job....mostly just observing and nagging a bit and directing traffic. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: GUEST,Nancy King at work Date: 31 Oct 06 - 05:38 PM Well, since I haven't seen much -- or any -- adverse comment on the NEW FINAL schedule Rita posted, I have to assume it's PERFECT! :0) (At least I hope it doesn't mean everybody's been PM-ing their complaints to Rita....) There are several things about the schedule that are not quite what we would wish, but it's the best we could do, particularly in the face of several last-minute challenges. We probably wouldn't have scheduled so many workshops, but Mudcatters and others came up with so many good ideas we just had to include! Next year we'll try to aim for fewer workshops, some of them longer than 1 hour. I do want to send a special thank-you to Carly's husband, Dean Clamons, who set up the schedule grid in the computer in both Word and HTM versions -- and also changed all the times on the workshop list when we had to scrunch things into a tighter time frame. And then he re-did all of it when more changes were made, again, and again, and again... A very patient man, our friend Dean. Looking forward to seeing y'all this weekend! Nancy |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Ferrara Date: 02 Nov 06 - 03:12 PM Wow, Dean has created the most incredible set of online schedule grids. You may want to print them and bring them. First of all they're in color. Second (this won't help once you're at the Getaway) if you hold your cursor over a workshop, you will see at least the beginning of the blurb for that workshop. Don't try to use the links from grid to grid though, because we haven't figured it out quite yet.... We know it's late to get this glitzy feature this year, but now that Dean has figured it out, we'll have it available from now on (as long as we can cajole Dean into being on the committe, at least!) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2006 Program Information From: Jeri Date: 03 Nov 06 - 08:26 AM Yep, I know this message will eventually be edited out. I'm not going to be there, and I've avoided saying so because it would have been my eighth year in a row and it breaks my heart to not be there. I can't drive for 9 hour drive, get out of the car and party like I used to be able to do; the timing means missed work (and I HAVE to be there on Monday); the money - gas, tolls, missed work... mostly the length of the drive. Everybody have fun, and post your stories when it's over. I want to hear about the great workshops, concerts, and impromptu singing, as well as who won the 2006 bunk-diving competition and who was busted by the booze police or did anything else amusingly (no permanent damage) embarrassing.
