(2) Fougasse: A flat bread, usually including strips of bacon or onions or olives... As a picture tells more than a long speech... picture1 and picture2... (3) Black pudding. (4) Vidala is Vidau's wife. The husband's family name was usually feminized to mention his wife. Note that the final "u" in Vidau" comes from the vocalization of the original, final "l", hence "Vidala". (5) Sonnailles: bells. The word is generally used to mean sheep or cow bells but it's also used to designate other ringing music instruments (6) Anticaille/Antiquaille: an old dance from that time (1400's-1500's). Rabelais mentions it.

Subject: Music: 1-28 Lei bergier tropa rustica From: Artful Codger Date: 19 Nov 12 - 11:01 AM The manuscript contains two versions of this song with similar texts but quite different tunes. The first tune has been recorded by Aurea, and a psaltery version is also floating around somewhere. 1. Lei bergièrs tropa rustica: Click to play MIDI (joeweb).2. Lei pastres de lei montanhas: Click to play MIDI (joeweb). For the second tune, the intended mode may have been Dorian; it would make more sense of the B# (flat-cancelling natural) in the melody line.[Back to song index by name, by number] |

Subject: Music: 1-27 Qui lo filh de dieu voudra veire From: Artful Codger Date: 18 Nov 12 - 06:28 PM This song appears to have four musical parts associated with it. The first is the melody of the song. At the end of that score is written the beginning of one of the other three parts, but while those parts fit together (after a fashion), they don't fit well with the song's melody. My belief is that they form an instrumental piece, perhaps played after the song or between verses of the song. Subject: Music: 1-25 Cantem tots la gloria dau filh From: Artful Codger Date: 17 Nov 12 - 10:49 AM The score accompanying this text is clearly a harmony part; I haven't found a corresponding melody part. We know from the index and the several page numberings that not all pages of this collection have survived. Not infrequently, the first part written down with a text was a harmony part, possibly because the melody was so well-known at the time that recording it was of lesser priority, or even deemed to be unnecessary (until later). In these cases, the melodies might appear on another part of the page or on a separate page entirely—wherever room remained. Here, the melody part was either lost or never written down. * The manuscript is hardly readable here, it's the best solution I found that fits both rhythm and sense though the verb "ravir" = to delight would be "ravissián" in the imperfect.
