The tune was in use in England and America as early as 1830 for a song called 'Buy a Broom' sung by Madame Vestris. It was sung in English with a German accent. It starts 'From Teutschland I came
with my light wares all laden.'
    I'm going to close this thread because it'd drawing a lot of Spam. If you'd like to discuss this song further, start a new thread and I'll link to this one.
