Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: GUEST,Tote Oma Date: 25 Oct 23 - 11:06 AM I believe Svend Grundtvig's major work on Danish Ballads also contains references to German equivalents. Sadly my knowledge of Danish is pretty much non-existent, and I'm not accustomed to working with it on any level really. Does anybody know if there is an English or German language translation of Grundtvig's work available, in print or online? I can always employ Google translate if there is a digital version of it online in Danish, if somebody has a link for that either! Thanks! |

Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: GUEST,keberoxu Date: 25 Oct 23 - 05:18 PM ANd let us not forget an entry that made it all the way into classical music repertoire: Bürger's "Lenore" is reminiscent of an English-language ballad about a lover coming back from the dead. |
Subject: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: GUEST,Tote Oma Date: 25 Oct 23 - 11:02 AM Hallo, I'm interested to learn more about the German folk song tradition, specifically 'narrative songs' akin to the type of song/ballad which Francis James Child pursued for inclusion in his collection, The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. I'm not confining my interest to German language ballads which are versions of 'Child Ballads', just mentioning Child's collection as a frame of reference for the type of song I'm interested to seek out. I know Child referenced German equivalents of ballads which he included in his collection. I'm starting from there, seeking out English language resources. I have a basic but working knowledge of German and would welcome details of German language resources if anybody has some links. Particularly interested to hear recordings, if anybody knows of any good archival resources or commercial releases from past/contemporary performers who have recorded some those old German narrative songs. I have come across some archival recordings in my initial research, and just looking to expand on that. I'd be interested to learn about any other old singing traditions from Germany, or German speaking communities. For example, I have seen some material about the German language song tradition in Pennslyvania. * I have seen there are two other threads on Mudcat which provide information related to my query: German Folk Music: https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=37797 German Folk Songs: https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=52807 * Any comments/links/pointers would be most welcome and appreciated. vielen danke |
Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: GUEST,Tote Oma Date: 01 Nov 23 - 08:13 AM Thanks to everybody for their replies thus far. As I have continued my research I found this interesting website: https://deutscheslied.com/ An impressive archive of German folk song material. It seems this archive is the passion project of one person...a man of German heritage from/living in Canada. Most definitely an impressive effort. He also has a YouTube channel, where he posts recordings. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUPr7Nm-uBwiLbuyQVfE7xA/videos |
Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: GUEST,Tote Oma Date: 01 Nov 23 - 08:27 AM Thanks Joe for the link to the German Music Archive. I hadn't been aware of the organisation before your post. I have also found that there is a Deutsche Volksliedarchiv / German Folk Song Archive, which has it's base in Freiburg, as part of the university there. Their catalogue is searchable online. https://www.zpkm.uni-freiburg.de/collections/germanfolksongarchive _ Thanks to everybody else re. their posts about collections like 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn' and Erk's 'Deutsche Liederhort'. All very helpful, and much appreciated! T.O. |

Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Nov 23 - 04:12 AM Natürlich! Although I've often wondered if the phrase is "alles gute" or "alles Gute." -Joe- |
Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Nov 23 - 04:21 PM Thank you, MudGuard and Reinhard. I've wondered about that for years. |
Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: MudGuard Date: 02 Nov 23 - 12:44 PM "gut" (or it's plural form "gute") is an adjective, and is normally written with a normal "g" (as in "gute Frage" - good question). But in this case, the adjective is used like a noun (as in "good things"). And thus it is written with a capital "G", as all nouns in the german language start with a capital letter. |
Subject: RE: German Narrative Songs / Volkslieder From: Reinhard Date: 02 Nov 23 - 06:37 AM It's "alles Gute". See Alles Gute zur korrekten Schreibweise! |
