hmmm- a workshop on bodrhan songs? 'Brian the King' almost *demands* bodrhans - wouldn't mind trying it with a massed bodrhan choir. Get enough of them and maybe I could even stay on beat!

To our shy friend - I am almost pathologically afraid of new situations, entering new places, mneeting new people, etc. My first Getaway I almost turned the car around and drove away.and this was despite having met a number of people previously at Old Songs, and knowing them from the mudcat. So I can sympathise.

I missed a good section of Sunday nights concert because I had to go outside until the shaking stopped after my turn. (My stage fright tends to hit AFTER performance rather then before).

But the music is worth it. But that doesn't mean you have to perform if you don't want to - you can always request a tune or song when it's your turn. (This backfired on me once when I requested one from a much more seasoned performer - and when his turn came he requested one he knew I did.)

Bodhráns songs workshop , yes there are many songs that can be used
and I think that those who play bodhrán would like take part in that kind of workshop.
I would like to do that workshop.

Yes, I do, Rita- and it's a good one.

Last year most of the recording I did was sub standard, I didn't have an external mike so too much extraneous stuff was picked up. This year's is much better- (except for what appears to be an incipient case of asthma on my part! I'll have to have that checked out.)

Next year I want to see about acquiring a lightweight mike stand- every time I moved the mike, it made noise. Irritating as can be.

But there are a lot of really good recordings. My plan is to take the minidiscs to a tech shop and have them make master CDs from them- I suspect there will be 7 or so - only about 80 minutes goes onto each CD and I think I will have something like 500 minutes. Haven't finished the clean up process yet so new firm figures yet.

Before I do that, I will start a thread on the identities of singers and songs. That will give each person one last chance to say 'NO WAY'!!

After that I'll finish the process and burn a copy for everyone who wants one- or follow through on whatever better ideas people have. Maybe donate a copy to the Mudcat?

In any case, there are a ton of songs there that I want to learn. Y'all have BEAUTIFUL voices and you know many, many songs that I had never heard.

There were lots of special moments for me too. In Kathy's workshop for Helen, the big full choruses were wonderful. Jeri's song that she'd sung for Helen touched me- I want to hear it again please. Meeting Justine at dinner and discussing Dungeons and Dragons (almost introducing her to Barry because I hadn't figured it out). George Ward's workshoop (he's such a good singer) especially his song you can't build a barn without friends (I don't know the real title) Has he recorded that anywhere? Becoming buddies with Sandy LaPrell. Watching Ken and Barry sing and interact, listening to Mary Smith sing, enjoying Tom and Liz singing behind me during the sunday concert, and Scarpis singing the Elvis song with no accent, Mary Js's song in the Ballads session of the Ghost Ship,   George and Mary's whole set, Getting a hug from Mick, rubbing KarenK's back and Ebbie rubbing mine! Watching Rita Glow and Bill grin. Watching the youngsters show off their treasures that George had made or hidden for them, sitting by the pond with Pete and Will watching the ducks....There were times that I felt out of place or just too self conscious to be comfortable,I am grunpy with myself for not singing in the concert-maybe next year, but it was a wonderful Getaway. Thanks to all. Lorraine

I'm really amazed at how much good this weekend did me, and my friend Maria says the same thing. I work in a very corporate environment - have to for the time being mainly because my son needs the insurance coverage and I need to be in a big company. Sometimes I feel so drained, and it seems like the big impersonal corporation just overwhelms me. I come home and don't even feel like singing a song or picking up an instrument. But at the Getaway I found myself coming back to life - everything seemed so "real". The great thing about folk music is that it's plain and simple and very human. At work everything seems complicated and abstract. It was good to get a dose of humanity and simplicity. Now I feel like singing again.

Is anyone else having this experience? I'll be walking down the street, and see some of my new Getaway pals. Just yesterday I "saw" LEJ and Tannywheeler, and the day before I "saw" Jacqui and Janie. Of course it wasn't really them, but they sure looked like them and made me do a double take!!

I have a similar experience, but it happens when I look at people in a car next to me in traffic, or waiting in line somewhere, and I see a tired face, or a stressed-out face, just a plain-ol-face, and think, "I don't know you. I don't know a blessed thing about you. But who knows? You just MIGHT be the type that piles into a car once a year to sing your heart out with like-minded weirdo-folkie types. Who the hell knows?!! My God, you might do it every Tuesday night!"

And then I have to smile at them. And they smile back. And then, I think, maybe I DO know you ; )

Great thought, Dani. The thought kept recurring to me at the Getaway that we were seeing and being seen in our true colors. The people in the car next to you and the one next to them and the next one- who knows? We all need a place to rest.

I haven't 'seen' Mudcatters but I have had two distinct dreams about Camp Ramblewood. In last night's dream it was chilly!

Oh- I just remembered the first one- I'm outdoors by a red building -lying on the grass, would you believe - playing a CD of the Getaway. Up the roadway below the knoll where I was comes a straggly row of Getaway-ers, cheerful and noisy. Just as they passed, Janie looked up at me and smiled and waved. (Hi, Janie!)

Well, this year's been a little different since my first Getaway guest came in on the 12th and they'll be back tonight for a couple more nights. The grounding influences of everyday life seem to get pushed aside when Getaway comes home. Maybe I'll just have to open a home for wayfaring folkies.....

This year's "I wish I could take home" award goes to Geoff the Duck. Even without the banjo, the man is a treasure. Beautiful wife. Beautiful children; beautiful soul.

Resting now.

At the risk of prolonging an already excessive thread, I love the Getaway song contributions, especially Scarpi's. But I'll also treasure the contributions from the other wanderful people.

I come to share them salt sea shanties,
From the ships laid up or lost,
I come to sing them old forebitters,
Which were sung while tempest tossed;
I'm gonna sing and peel the paint
From the ceiling overhead,
I'm gonna sing and raise a chorus
From them deep sea sailors so long dead!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I have been uploading pictures, and Rita has been labeling them....we are only up to about 68? out of 130-140 so far, but it is a start.

go here and see thru Sat.afternoon sometime

More tomorrow, when I get some more sorting done and my aching back, which I strained in my shop, permits.

I like this Opera pic posting....I have 300 MEGS of space, I can do 10 at a time, and it is a simple interface and goes quickly.

You can post comments about individual pics 'if' you register, and you can join and have your own albums...(see bottom of page)

If you see errors or want something added and you don't wish to join/register, PM me or post here and I'll fix it.

Have fun!

Great shots, Bill. But man, does it make me realize how very much I missed. I'm not unhappy with anything I did go to at the Getaway- how could I be- they were meaty and satisfying - but I didn't so much as get to the white house - last year there was a great workshop on the back porch - and all those sunny outdoors pictures make me want to go right back and do it right this time. And the pub sing. And those pictures with the Beaubear and Amos singing and playing- where was I? I guess next time I'll just follow someone around and do what they do!

Kind of sad to think we probably won't see that camp again. (Ya can't win, huh, FSGWers? ha) But it is a pretty spot and the rolling green slopes are very evocative to me of my youthful days in Virginia.

First, the non-musical memories:
Meeting Micca and Khatt
Seeing Dani again (freed any lobsters lately?) and meeting her daughters
Hugs from Big Mick and Col K
Spending Saturday afternoon just talking with Wakana on a bench in the sun
Seeing the look on Kendall's face when Jacqui gave him those roses Hanging out with MMario
The good natured crew in our cabin (come visit us in Maine, Maria!)
Seeing Maddy go from NOT having a good time to having a great time
Helping Tinker and Dani's girls decorate Mick and Koko's boudoir
Being plied with chocolate and reading Bearded Bruce's sonnets

And for the music:
KT's mini concert
Theresa's mighty voice
The Saturday night session that morphed from Irish rebel songs to blues to gospel and then some
Larry Otway's song Richard Murray
The foreign language workshop
El Greko's beautiful songs
Geoff the Duck's Duelling Banjos
Roger from Baltimore's Armadillo song
And that's just what is immediately in the front of my brain

The most important part of the Getaway for me was the shared feeling of camaraderie that I felt, and the encouragement that gave me the courage to sing in public for the first time. I will be back next year.

I'm thinking of a great workshop theme for next year. What about a "Singers Workshop for Newbies". Several people mentioned that they were just bursting to sing a song, but they were too shy or got too nervous. What about a workshop designed to help those people "find their singing voices" and overcome their shyness. It might be easier to sing in front of a bunch of people you KNOW are shaking in their shoes waiting for their turn to sing. I got over that kind of stage fright a long time ago and I think with the Getaway being such a nurturing, friendly place, that perhaps it would enable some people to break through that barrier that keeps them from participating actively in song circles.

Oh, I like it, maryrrf! Noted.

At Augusta Vocal Week I saw a concert given by students in a class about building confidence. They sang their "solo" parts two by two, which I thought was neat (they were singing for about 400 people.) I figure each partner gave the other something to lean on, added strength to the sound, took a little of the heat, and besides that, you wouldn't want to let your partner down by collapsing and being unable to sing.

Thread creep, I guess, Nuff said until next summer when we start to plan.
