You can talk about Lassie and old Rin-Tin-Tin
And Snoopy the beagle, young Charlie's best friend,
Or King of the Mounties, or Benji, quite small,
But Gluon the Duckdog's the best of them all.

Not really a particle, not quite a wave,
We never know how Gluon's apt to behave.
For life's complicated, it's not really simple,
When governed by Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle.

Some say he's made up, just a MOAB invention,
A duckdog who lives in the seventh dimension,
And flies here to there faster than Mighty Mouse,
And sleeps in a teserract-shaped duckdog house.

He navigates wormholes to new galaxies
Where live huge duckdog-eating Thingamazees.
Worse than Bandersnatches, much worse than a Snark,
But he frightens them off with an ear shattering "Quark!"

So here's to our Gluon, oh duckdog supreme,
More than an idea, much more than a meme.
The best darned duckdog in the whole multiverse.
Yes, as duckdogs go, we could have done worse.
--Beedub, way back in the ancient days of 2015

I actually feel sort of sorry for the GO.

There is a theory that when gluons gang up and pair up they are respondsible for gravity.
Individually they are nice but a pack f them can be inconcievably viscious.

I have received a strange email from gnu. He said that his mum died September 27 and that he was in the hospital in bad shape. No other information.

I responded and asked him what was going on.

I haven't heard from him, though I sent a note.

MOM will clear a space in the guest room and make him comfortable if he comes to visit.

With detective's hat on I've located enough information to send a card.

Failing that,

During the hacking months ago The PM section was also involved so that a named member would post messages of a person in a downward emotional spiral and then erase/edit and post different messages.

'They' by the same member name also delivered message boxes that would say "Mudcat has files for you to download"
It would crudely disable computers if clicked upon.

I know much more but no one here believed me.

The best defense was to totally ignore the attack, which I did by not taking the bait.

There was a 4 chan or Russian quality to the hack and was more sophisticated than the 'member name' who actually bragged about his hacking prowess.

I have hacking prowess. I once split five cords of seasoned hickory, oak and ironwood in one (1) hour using only my spit, hands, and pocketknife. AND I have witnesses to prove it, provided they aren't all dead yet.

Gnu the inscrutable seems to be feeling better. MOM feels great, now that she has been able to open a window at night and put a blanket over the sheets on the bed. You don't want to know what she's getting up to for Halloween decorations - scares the neighborhood kids shitless. Mostly we see families cross the street to go past the house so they don't trigger the motion detectors.

Two doors down there is a halloween decoration we can smell from here.
The house on the corner has a tall fence so they suspended 13 ghosts in a tree that has a skeleton bride and groom underneath along with 22 skeleton guests suspended on folding chairs. A full reception banquet with 20 lbs. of putrified shrimp (the smell) and some huge lobsters for show. 2 skeleton security gate keepers with clipboards both have their skull up their ass. Wedding march music started up last night and has continued all day today. The one thing they are saving for a surprise seems to be the preacher?

I'm thinking of getting a pumpkin next week.

The tornado(s) did a lot of damage in north and east Dallas. If anyone has ever flown into Love Field, you've been in the area. That's about 45 miles east of me.

Once all of the sturm und drang passed, the weather cleared up and it's a fabulous day out for all of those people clearing up tree branches, downed power lines, and exploded buildings.

The real dangers of a tornado to homes is lack of a quick dispersion of high pressure inside a home compared to the low pressure inside a tornado.
Without a pressure release valve, homes explode. Secondly the wind can shift homes on their foundation that causes loss of structural integrity.

A safe room only addresses protection from debris, not keeping one's home intact if hit.

Although there is little to be done in a sudden class 5 tornado, I imagine 2 solutions where no cellar is availlable.

1. Build homes with a cental 10 foot square reinforced wind chimney that connects every floor with 5 foot square wind egress channels that connects to the central chimney.

2. Steel anchor cables attached to bedrock or other underground anchors drape the home to wall and roof netting to hold the home stay put and avoid foundation shift.

This a low cost radical idea that comes from my imagination so feel free to ignore it.

Hi, Mom!

Here's the factoid for the day:

Have you ever noticed that the numbers on calculator keypads and telephone keypads are arranged differently? Have you ever wondered why?

Well, back in the days when touch-tone dialing was being introduced, AT&T's engineers realized that proficient users of office calculators could enter a phone number so fast that the generated tones would "step on each other" resulting in incomplete calls. So, they decided to move the 1,2,3 row from the bottom of the keypad to the top and the 7,8,9 row from the top to the bottom to slow office machine hot-dogs down to manageable speeds.

Nuclear waste? Simple: get fusion power plants running and use the fission waste to power them. Rocketing the stuff into the sun would also work, until a rocket blew up on the launch pad or on the way up and out. Or encase it in concrete and stack it in the middle of a desert such as Washington, DC and let those who visit it deal with the consequences of their stupidity (who knows, we may need the stuff later).

Subject: RE: MOAB - Mother of All BS [annex]

I think nuclear waste will prove to be a valuable resource in the near future.

When accidental exposure to nuclear waste creates a horde of giant houseflies, we'll need to intentionally expose some spiders to create giant spiders to eat the giant flies. Then, if the giant spiders become a problem, we'll just expose some birds to control them. Then, we'll probably need to expose some cats to eat all the giant birds. And then some dogs to eat the giant cats....

Eventually, all the animals on earth will have eaten each other and, by the time intelligent life evolves again, the remaining nuclear waste will have decayed into harmless sludge.

His wife, our massage therapist, would worry -- as would his three kids. Pocatello is short firefighters and EMTs -- the other day there were three calls in 15 minu4tes and there would have been no one to respond to a fourth. Same thing in the police. Perhaps because the city pays 14% under the state's average? Because the firefighters' union has endorsed a pro-Union fella for City Council?

Hi, Mom!

We finally got some rain and our shiitake logs expressed their pleasure by putting forth an abundance of delicious mushrooms.

In their honor, I have composed this ditty, to the tune of "We're In the Money".

🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵

We got shiitake, we got shiitake,
We got delicious fungi growin' outta logs,
We got shiitake, that ain't bull hockey,
We just might turn ourselves into shiitake hogs.

You can hear those 'shrooms a sizzlin' in the fryin' pan
Mix 'em in an omelet or a stir fry, man oh man!

We got shiitake, we got shiitake,
We'll even give a few leftovers to the dogs!

From: Max - PM
Date: 11 May 06 - 10:43 PM

I've got to tell you, I'm sick and tired of some of the crap that I've seen lately.

Martin Gibson: you have to pack up and go. Your knowledge and contributions are valuable, and it's a shame that your sociopathy prevents us from hosting you or taking you seriously anymore.

Shambles: I just don't care anymore. You press your point, time after time, until you press too far and then complain about the check. You do this purposefully to prove a point, but in the end, you are a distraction from the real point of this site. You too, should bid farewell.

Joe: Do I need to separate you two?

Americans: We're losing to the Limey's. I attempt to lure American Folk artists, historians, archivists and enthusiasts to the Mudcat, and am repeatedly rejected because the Mudcat is now viewed as an UK Folk Forum. I don't blame the UK'ers, nor wish them to change anything they are doing, however, I'd like a nice balance so not to alienate either.

Members/Users: We've never had a worse year as far as contributions. I am footing the bill for over 50% of the expenses year-to-date. We have maybe a dozen folks that contribute on any sort of consistent basis. I'd like to refuse any further contribution from these folks, because I feel they carry a burden that they need not if I did my job right. I would like to see a whole new set of folks step up to the plate and get us through a month or more. Remember, it does not need to come out of your pocket. We have an international community of like-people here. Items that one may have and not need or want no longer can find a happy home in our auction. You can host a sing and put a tip bucket out. There are a million things you can think of to support this site and it's purpose.   Nude calendars, recipes, blackmail…

Max: You need to keep this site running smoothly. These downtimes and outages are unacceptable for a real Website. We want reliability and we want you to fix the duplication and miss-ordered threads. Most importantly, you need a better backup system to ensure we won't lose any of this valuable resource.

Jeff: I want the related threads to be in a drop down box. For that matter, I'd like the thread posting summary in a drop down as well.

Everyone: She ain't what she used to be. We'll never get it back. This site should be about our eclectic interest in old-time traditional music from all over the world. Our local communities don't have a lot to offer us as far as merchandise and community, so we go to the Mudcat. We should welcome the newbies. We should covet the information we have now and strive to collect more. We should use this place to meet each other, organize and/or promote events. Please, don't forget the good of such a place.

To those of you who aren't around so much anymore: Give us another shot, please.

Snug as a bug in Hotel Doral
Trump snubs the world while he loses morale
Sooner or later he is going to hell
When all of the bug bites begin to swell

They swell and itch from his head to his toes
The bites grew together from his throat to his nose
All his insults now sound like they're snot
He thought he was great but now he's not

One of the bug bites became highly infected
His yes men were there but no longer protected
All the King's men and all the King's horses
Would not protect him, not even armed forces

The moral of the story is not that its gory
Its the tiniest germ that can bring down a boring
Meglomaniac self interested whore King.
We may be but germs but WE write our story

It is currently 14F with a windchill of -9F. Snow covers the ground, an alabaster blanket. There are tracks in snow -- of crosscountry skiers, a lone snowshoer, coyotes, and the pack of wolves that lives on the golf course. I have called and called, hoping Gluon would answer and change this weather, but in vain.    As Johnny "Lunger" Keats wrote, "The owl for all his feather [is] a-cold." I am reminded, looking out the bay window, of Ralph W. Emerson's "The Snowstorm"

Announced by all the trumpets of the sky,
Arrives the snow, and, driving o’er the fields,
Seems nowhere to alight: the whited air
Hides hills and woods, the river and the heaven,
And veils the farm-house at the garden’s end.
The sled and traveller stopped, the courier’s feet
Delayed, all friends shut out, the housemates sit
Around the radiant fireplace, enclosed
In a tumultuous privacy of Storm.

Or, tho' 'tis but October (tho' near November) John "Leafy" Whittier's poem "Snowbound" (which I shan't bore you with beyond the first stanza as it seems to go on forever):

The sun that brief December day
Rose cheerless over hills of gray,
And, darkly circled, gave at noon
A sadder light than waning moon.
Slow tracing down the thickening sky
Its mute and ominous prophecy,
A portent seeming less than threat,
It sank from sight before it set.
A chill no coat, however stout,
Of homespun stuff could quite shut out,
A hard, dull bitterness of cold,
That checked, mid-vein, the circling race
Of life-blood in the sharpened face,
The coming of the snow-storm told.
The wind blew east; we heard the roar
Of Ocean on his wintry shore,
And felt the strong pulse throbbing there
Beat with low rhythm our inland air.

Come, brave Gluon! Hurry and take these four-letter words from hence!

That was odd. But the system, one germ at a time, will take down the Orange one. :-)

Over the last couple of weeks I've chatted online and via email with Gnu. He has quite a story to tell, but it's his, not mine, so maybe he'll drop in one day and share some of it. It has been like pulling teeth to understand the timeline, but it makes sense now. He's sounding better all of the time.

New freezer arriving tomorrow morning. I wish there wasn't so much thawed carnage to go with it (though the carne is all rescued and stuffed into the side-by-side of the regular fridge.)
