Grand jurors who will consider Trump charges to be selected Tuesday

The selection of two Fulton County grand juries will be made Tuesday, with one of the panels expected to decide whether to hand up an indictment for alleged criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election.

One set of jurors is likely to be asked to bring formal charges against former President Donald Trump and other well-known political and legal figures. In a letter to county officials almost two months ago, District Attorney Fani Willis indicated the indictment could be obtained at some point between July 31 and Aug. 18.

Willis began her investigation shortly after hearing the leaked Jan. 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump asked Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” the 11,780 votes he needed to defeat Joe Biden in Georgia. She later convened a special purpose grand jury which examined evidence and heard testimony over an almost eight-month period. Its final report, only part of which has been made public, recommended multiple people be indicted for alleged crimes.

Trump is busy trying to delay the hearing for Nauta (his attorneys are involved in all of this, despite Nauta having his own attorneys, so there is some kind of linkage there). Every delay they manage pushes a trial closer to the primary season. Let's see if Willis can trip him up.

Taking a detour back to the civil cases brought by E. Jean Carroll, Trump loses immunity shield in E Jean Carroll defamation lawsuit, he lost in the first case, and in the second, where he was "immune" by virtue of being president, he no longer has that protection.

The department previously maintained Mr Trump was legally immune as he was president when he made remarks in 2019.

But on Tuesday its lawyers said they no longer had "sufficient basis" to conclude Mr Trump had acted within the scope of his duties.

The decision boosts E Jean Carroll's defamation lawsuit against Mr Trump.

In May, Mr Trump was ordered to pay the former magazine columnist $5m (£3.9m) after being found liable for sexual abuse of her in 1996 at a New York department store.

Ms Carroll, 79, is currently seeking $10m from Mr Trump in a defamation lawsuit, which is due to go to trial in January.

The legal action cites his remarks as president about her in 2019 while responding to reporters' questions.

The lawsuit has been updated to reflect further comments he made about her during a CNN town hall the day after the court's verdict two months ago.

The justice department had previously taken the position that Mr Trump could be defended by government attorneys because he was serving in his capacity as president when he made the remarks.

But on Tuesday its lawyers said "there is no longer a sufficient basis to conclude that the former president was motivated by 'more than an insignificant' desire to serve the United States Government."

I know what you mean, I used to pull the sentences together into a regular grammatical paragraph when I pulled up quotes. They break them up so there are gaps between the sentences on phones and tablets. The look of a solid wall of text, as little as there is on a phone, is still hard to read. After a while you just give up and paste it the way they parse it.

Politico is reporting that because House majority leader McCarthy wouldn't endorse Trump, Trump is furious. So McCarthy promised to later this summer hold a vote to expunge Trump's two impeachments.

Even if he were to pull it off, that is a bell that can't be unrung - twice. It's like telling the jury to disregard some inappropriate or non-admissible testimony. It's out there.

Trump had until Thursday (7/20) to appear before the most recent Grand Jury (Washington, D.C.) and didn't; last time he was given that opportunity I seem to recall it was less than a week before a hearing was called to offer up the indictment settled upon by the Grand Jury. So maybe this week the D.C. folks will get out ahead of the Georgia folks, who have plans for the first couple of weeks in August.

Meanwhile the judge in the civil action by E. Jean Carroll has made it clear that Trump committed rape, even if the jury said sexual assault. Because Trump keeps trying to say he wasn't found guilty of rape.

By moving the Documents trial to May, that opens up the calendar for a December trail for one of these cases that has a lot less delicate content (dealing with classified documents means Trump's attorneys need clearance and one of them is slow-walking that already.) This could be the Atlanta trial or a Washington, D.C. trial.

The barriers are up around the courthouse in Georgia, and the MSNBC and other news networks are letting their big name folks have a few days off now because as soon as the penny drops for Trump, whether in Georgia or Washington, D.C., they'll be on for many hours a day on each other's programs discussing the fine points. I listen for enough time to get the gist of what is happening then wait till there's a comprehensive story in the NY Times or the WaPo or even in the Wall Street Journal (different perspectives, certainly). I'll save my longer viewing for when the trials actually happen.

Things are bubbling. One of the hosts on MSNBC checked her phone on camera when it pinged, alerting her to a post (about the grand jury members leaving the building) - realtime stuff on the air without someone speaking into a earbud in her ear. The speculation now is whether the Justice Department will break the news with a press release or if Trump will beat them to it by announcing his own bad news (that he always spins and uses for fundraising.)

For his PAC, this is probably good timing. They need another cause to use for raising money because apparently they're "nearly broke."
