An architect of the fake elector plot is found on video at the Jan.6 insurrection riot. Ken Chesebro had earlier pleaded the 5th to the question "where were you on Jan.6th". He was supposedly hanging out with Alex Jones but I did not see Alex.

Bill Barr is still trying to save his own ass. Thats galling.

Part of his power is that he has an extraordinarily mobile face. Some people find his repertoire of smirks, shrugs, scowls, smiles, and clownish mugging (as in the photo) irresistible.

They love his cha-cha moves with lowered brows, and they love when he lowers his brows and smiles broadly while pointing at random suckers in the crowd to establish the cheap illusion of personal interest. They love how he applauds them applauding him.

Add to these his large size, idiosyncratic long tie, newly golden hair, super-modulated voice, frequent insults, scorn for logical argument, and mastery of verbal conning techniques, and you have a juggernaut of demogoguery, dear to millions.

Former president Donald Trump's bond set at $US200,000 ($AU310,000) in Georgia case on scheming to overturn election

I think $200k would just be pocket money for him.

"The bond agreement, outlined in a court filing signed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Mr Trump's defence attorneys, also bars Trump from intimidating co-defendants, witnesses or victims in the case — including on social media.

"He is also prohibited from communicating "in any way, directly or indirectly" about the facts of the case with any co-defendant or witness, except through attorneys."

Let's not quibble. I've been told often that Biden is both a "Marxist" and "demented. The guy's senile! He can't strong two sentences together!"

As for Jesus, a local columnist asked whether it was coincidental that Trump's first indictment came during Holy Week. Now I see that it's actually a thing:

https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-arraignment-jesus-christ-conspiracy-theory-670c45bd71b3466dcd6e8e188badcd1d

In 2016 heard two women independently liken Trump to God (yes, that was the word they used). Asked what she thought of Donald Trump just last week, an Iowa voter said, "Trump is everything! There's God." She raised a hand above her head. "And there's Trump." She gestured about two inches lower.

And, as they say, now this:

"In the CBS News/YouGov survey, Trump voters were asked to pick who they feel tells them the truth. Trump gathered 71 percent of the vote, friends and family gathered 63 percent, conservative media figures had 56 percent, and religious leaders gathered 42 percent. The poll was conducted between August 16-18 and interviewed 2,061 U.S. adult residents. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 points for the sample overall."

https://www.newsweek.com/trump-voters-trust-ex-president-more-their-family-friends-poll-1821138

It's concerning.

Yes, Steve, unfortunately there is. Once Willis started the work to indict Trump, the GOP legislature put a law into place to allow them to remove any prosecutors they don't like. And yes, the Iowa poll is a horror show at the beginning of the political season.

"Cornish voters voted for Brexit." I've heard that said. Well I'm a Cornish voter and I didn't vote for brexit. Not a brush I want to be tarred with, and I imagine that plenty of voters in Iowa would object to the characterisation of them presented here. Yes, Steve, every single person in Iowa expressed an opinion to the poll takers and every single one supported Trump. [not] Will you stop picking arguments where everyone understood what was said but you need to make it absurd?

Trump was told he can't break the law (including make threats over social media). Trump's bond set at $200,000 in Georgia case, warned about social media threats
A Fulton County judge has set former President Donald Trump's bond at $200,000 in District Attorney Fani Willis' election interference case.

Trump and the other 18 defendants in the case have been given until Friday at noon to appear at the Fulton County Jail for processing. The former president said Monday evening on his social media platform that he intends to surrender in Georgia on Thursday.

In addition to Trump, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee set bond Monday for attorneys John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro at $100,000, for Ray Smith III at $50,000, and for Scott Hall at $10,000. . . . All the defendants' bond agreements include a provision that they "shall perform no act to intimidate any person known to him or her to be a codefendant or witness in this case or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice."

That story also states that 42% of caucus goers polled have indicated support. Those are GOP caucus goers, and a percentage were polled and there is always a margin of error. In case you were thinking of blowing that up into the whole state of Iowa population again.

In unqualified and unelaborated phrases such as "Iowa voters think" or "Mudcatters prefer," it should be inferred that *some*, not *all*, of the indicated group are meant.

Article 3 of the 14th Amendment renders Trump ineligible to run for any office. A state AG would have to declare Trump can not be on his state's ballot and when Trump sued it would go to the Supreme Court.
The language is unambiguous and only leaves the enforcement in question. Much of the Constitution is written with a broad brush but not the 14th Amendment.

Trump's defense wants to make his speech and actions political but they are not political in State or Constitutional law.

I'm back from my 36th anniversary dinner. My wife is shooting for 50 but I probably won't remember who Trump was on my 50th anniversary.

A majority of Iowa voters weren't polled. Only a fraction of GOP voters. That is a small subset of Iowa voters, and I have a couple of friends up there who would be quick to tell you that no one asked them what they thought.

The gang of 18 have been surrendering and posting bail in Georgia this week, with Trump heading in on Thursday. There is a GOP "debate" this evening that I don't intend to watch, and I won't watch Trump's interview either.

The discussion that is picking up momentum is the way in which the Fourteenth Amendment may be applied to the upcoming election. It doesn't say "after due process" anyone who has sworn to uphold the Constitution who participates in an insurrection such as January 6 is ineligible to hold office. But how to exclude them? It may come down to states attorneys general simply not allowing their names on ballots. Trouble is, there are some who will play tit for tat and try to do the same to Biden with no cause. So - tread carefully, and hope he negotiates his freedom by promising never to run for office again.

Trump has swapped horses mid-stream. He just replaced his original Georgia lawyer with someone who has experience challenging Georgia's RICO law. Trump replaces top Georgia lawyer ahead of surrender
A Trump source indicated that this was not about Findling’s performance, while another familiar with Sadow called him the “best criminal defense attorney in Georgia.” Trump’s other Georgia attorney, Jennifer Little, is expected to stay on the legal team and work with Sadow.

“I have been retained to represent President Trump in the Fulton County, Georgia case. The president should never have been indicted. He is innocent of all the charges brought against him,” Sadow said in a statement. “We look forward to the case being dismissed or, if necessary, an unbiased, open minded jury finding the president not guilty. Prosecutions intended to advance or serve the ambitions and careers of political opponents of the president have no place in our justice system.”

In 2021, Sadow criticized RICO charges as a way for prosecutors to introduce evidence that would otherwise not be admissible during an interview about the potential charges Trump faced in Georgia.

He can criticise the RICO law all he wants, but chances are he can't do anything about it.
Days before Trump revamped his legal team, Findling and his partner Marissa Goldberg, along with Little, met with Willis to hash out a $200,000 bond for Trump. The bond and other pre-negotiated conditions of Trump’s release will allow him to be quickly processed when he turns himself in at the Fulton County jail Thursday evening.

Aha! A primetime surrender.

That was a general conclusion on MSNBC also. As awful as she is, she's "normal."

Meanwhile, when considering the occupants of the Trump clown car, here's a look back at Giuliani's aspirations. There's a financial newsletter I subscribe to that comes up with interesting insights into politics and financial topics (usually intertwined). From last week: Giuliani Was in the Running to Be Trump’s Attorney General. His Authoritarian Rule as Mayor Suggests a Nightmare Outcome
American democracy is in a slow death gurgle from the repetition of Orwellian reverse-speak slogans: “Make America Great Again,” “Save America,” “Drain the Swamp,” and “America’s Mayor.”

Most Americans have forgotten that Rudy Giuliani was under serious consideration to be nominated by Donald Trump as his Attorney General. As “America’s Mayor,” Giuliani would have likely sailed through his Senate confirmation.

Allowing public relations and branding agents to create the brand of “America’s Mayor” as the country reeled in shock after 9/11, launched the power-hungry Giuliani that today is facing a 13-count indictment that includes charges of racketeering and conspiracy.

The new media buzz is how did America’s Mayor get caught up in this mess. The hard truth is that Giuliani was always a wannabe authoritarian dressed up by handlers as an American hero.

Your system is weird. You have elections on fixed dates every four years. You spend nearly half of that four years fighting the next election. The fighting seems to consist of bunches of maniacs who shouldn't be anywhere near politics trying to outdo each other in proving to the country that they can out-lunatic all the others.

We have maximum terms of five years, though the PM can call an election whenever he or she wants, subject to that limit. We have just four or five weeks of intense campaigning. No-one's pretending that our politicos don't keep an eye and a half on the next election years ahead, but I have a feeling that your style of campaigning would go down like a lead balloon with our electorate. I haven't got a superiority complex about it, however, as we seem to be able to throw up idiots to run us who are almost as bad as yours. Democracy, eh?

Trump fired his 'best lawyer' imo before his booking.
I can surmise/guess that the lawyer suggested that Trump plead out, which is to take a deal to avoid jail time but accept guilt.

Trump may want to claim as much victimization and martyrdom as possible. A strategy like that is asking for a life sentence at his age.

The 34-vehicle motorcade stopped at the jailhouse only 26 minutes since the process was highly expedited.

It seems to me that Putin has far more motivation to influence a Trump election than ever. Could he go from Facebook bots to some dire direct action? His desperation has probably never been higher with the Ukraine war, sanctions, economy, and a near coup. If ever there was a time for Putin to go all in, it is our next election depending upon the status of a Trump candidacy.

While Trump has defied the odds most of his life I am betting he may not get as far as selecting a running mate like someone of Jim Jordan's ilk.

A random selection of what the Daily Mash thinks about Mugshot Man:

"Joe Turner said: 'I’ve turned around in Asda and seen this guy staring at me like that because I got between him and the white muffins.'"

“He thinks he looks tough? He looks like the morning after the first time a woman told him his impotence is his own fault and a big deal, and he’s going around outraged telling the whole bowls club."

“That’s the expression of a man who’s once again watching next door’s cat shit on his bedding plants. Or a poster advising you to get your prostate checked."

In response to those of the UK persuasion who constantly opine about the incredible wastefulness of US political behavior:

One of my favorite news anchors of the 70s was Howard K. Smith, who not only reported the news in the era of 3 network prime time, but could talk intelligently about it. Every few years he indulged himself in telling us his fellow countrymen some of the benefits of the UK parliamentary system, particularly in time and cost of preparing and administering political campaigns and elections.

I am often tempted to start a thread in the name of Jeremy Bentham, the English philosopher, jurist, and social reformer regarded as the founder of modern utilitarianism. He was and remains ahead of his time.

His "Short Review of the Declaration" should be read more than once by every U.S. citizen who tears up at the words of Thomas Jefferson (of which I are one).

English Philosopher’s Dressed-Up Skeleton Goes on View in New Glass Display
When utilitarian thinker Jeremy Bentham died in 1832, he requested his preserved remains be displayed in “an appropriate box or case”

Don't give Trump ideas! He won't want to be buried beside a green at his New Jersey golf club.

So all 19 have turned themselves in, and one is still in jail (or was last I heard, I think there's a hearing today about that.) He didn't have the collateral or cash for bail, or it may be he had a previous charge that made this one more complicated to sort out?

Talking about mugshots, look at this Oz politician who has loudly and publicly quit the racist, hate-based One Nation political party. (BTW he didn't quit because it is racist and hate-based. He knew that before he joined them.) Look at his photo on that page.

Mark Latham quits One Nation, accuses party of 'defrauding NSW electoral funds'

The photo reminds me not only of Trump's not-happy mugshot but also of the Muppet character Animal.

Oooohhh, don't be so hard on Animal, Helen.

.... I'd better reread 1984 for revision. What I thought when I first saw the offending mugshot is left as an exercise for the reader.

Second thoughts (once I could bear to look at said ugly mug): That's the face of a toddler who knows he's done wrong, and has just been Told Off. *Now* I know what Sir Pterry meant by someone having "a face like a smacked bottom".

MaJoC, are you referring to the orange one for the toddler face or the Aussie pollie?

If it is Trump, he doesn't ever know he has done wrong so he wouldn't pull that face, not for that reason anyway.

It's more likely that he is desperately trying not to shoot his mouth off and dig a deeper hole for himself.
