Subject: RE: Great Big Sea Lyrics. Got any? From: Bill D Date: 07 Jul 97 - 04:32 PM I just read the "www.Greatbigsea.com " web page. They state specifically that they either (1) write their own songs or (2) change traditional songs to a hard-driving Celtic-rock format! This really makes what they do beyond the scope of this forum, in my not-too-humble opinion! And, with most of their stuff under copyright, they probably don't WANT the lyrics posted! |
Subject: Lyr Add: A GREAT BIG SEA HOVE IN LONG BEACH From: Cliff McGann Date: 11 Jul 97 - 03:36 PM Actually I would say that half of Great Big Sea's songs are taken from the traditional Newfoundland canon of folksong. The arrangements definitely have a more modern take on them but I think fiddle, accordion, bodhrán and acoustic guitar accompanied traditional songs from one of North America's richest area's of folksong should be considered on this list. Some of the traditional tunes they do from their album Up are A Great Big Sea Hove in Long Beach, Lukey's Boat, The Jolly Butcher, The Ryan's and the and Pittmans. Here is Great Big Sea Hove in Long Beach, which is on their first CD. A great big sea hove in Long Beach Right fol-lor a tiddle-iddle I doh A great big sea hove in Long Beach And granny Snooks she lost her speech To me right fol diddle I dee A great big sea hove in the harbour Right fol-lor a tiddle-iddle I doh A great big sea hove in the harbour And hove me up to Keough's parlour To me right fol diddle I dee Oh, dear mother, I wants a sack Right fol-lor a tiddle-iddle I doh Oh, dear mother, I wants a sack With beads and buttons all down the back To me right fol diddle I dee Me foot is broke me frock is tore, Right fol-lor a tiddle-iddle I doh Me foot is broke me frock is tore, But Georgie Snooks I do adore To me right fol diddle I dee Oh fish is low and flour is high Right fol-lor a tiddle-iddle I doh Oh fish is low and flour is high So Georgie Snooks he can't have I To me right fol diddle I dee |
Subject: Lyr Add: FAST AS I CAN (Great Big Sea) From: bndgould@ auracom.com Date: 14 Jul 97 - 03:37 PM FAST AS I CAN {Up} From the first hello you gave to me I've done nothing else but smile And I know you're in a hurry Aah, but it's gonna take a while So, forgive me if we go slow But, theirs something I think you should know CHORUS: I'm going fast as I can Please don't make me rush This feeling comin' on way to fast I'll tell you all of the things That you'll never forget But, I'm not ready to say I love you yet I'm not ready to say I love you yet! So, don't push me into deep I've always been the fool - who rushes in I know you got to take the pieces one by one For you've got everything So, forgive me if we take time But, there's something that's been on my mind (Repeat chorus) I love you Ooh, they'll been times when I'm mistaken And they'll be times when were going to fight Aah, but you needn't doubt- we can work it out And in time we'll get it right! Subject: Lyr Add: A GREAT BIG SEA HOVE IN LONG BEACH From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 16 Jul 97 - 03:05 AM I don't have any Great Big Sea except for a Newfoundland version of The Seven Joys of Mary they did on a Christmas CD I have (not a depressing one.), although of course I have listened to their CD's in pubs. However, if you name any traditional Newfoundland song I would be please to send you the lyrics if I have them, as I have a grand Newfoundland songbook from 1955. Eventually I intend to post them all on the database, but in the meantime if there is something you have in mind, ask and I will look. The name of the band incidentally comes from the traditional Newfoundland song "A Great Big Sea Hove In Long Beach" -- Long Beach Nfld., of course:) A GREAT BIG SEA HOVE IN LONG BEACH A great big sea hove in Long Beach Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do A great big sea hove in Long Beach And Granny Snooks she lost her speech To me right fol didy fol dee. A great big sea hove in the harbour Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do A great big sea hove in the harbour And hove right up in Keough's Parlour, To me right fol didy fol dee. Oh dear mother I wants a sack. Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do Oh dear mother, I wants a sack With beads and buttons down the back To me right fol didy fol dee. Me boot is broke, me frock is tore, Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do Me boot is broke, me frock is tore But Georgie Snooks I do adore, To me right fol didy fol dee. Oh fish is low and flour is high, Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do Fish is low and flour is high. So Georgie Snooks he can't have I To me right fol didy fol dee. But he will have me in the fall, Right fol-or-al Ta-deedle, I do If he don't I'll hoist my sail And say good-bye to old Cannaille To me right fol didy fol dee. |

Subject: RE: Great Big Sea Lyrics. Got any? From: RS Date: 27 Jul 97 - 10:35 PM To: Marg Laffin (1) Although it's not been officially posted, several threads (elsewhere) have suggested that requests for new songs be put onto an entirely new thread, so they don't get lost within a thread with an altogether different title. (2) There have recently been two threads with this very query about Mari Mac - you can find them both by using the "Forum Search Prototype" with "Mari Mac" in the "Subject" box. Subject: Lyr Add: MARI-MAC (from Great Big Sea) From: GUEST,Pheana Date: 23 Dec 03 - 03:24 PM Guest, ursa, was close, but the official words are: There's a neat little lass and her name in Mari-Mac Make no mistake she's the girl I'm gonna track Lots of other fella's try to get her on her back But I'm thinking that they'll have to get up early Mary-Mac's mother's making Mari-Mac marry me My mother's making me marry Mari-Mac Well I'm gonna marry Mary for when Mary's taking care of me Well I'll be feeling merry when I marry Mari-Mac Now Mary and her mother are an aweful lot together In fact you hardly see the one without the other People often wonder if it's Mary or her mother Or both of them together I'm courting Well up among the heather in the hills of Benafee Will I had a bonny lass sitting on my knee A bumble bee stung me right above me knee Up among the heather in the hills of Benafee Well I said - wee bonny lassie where you gonna spend the day? She said among the heather in the hills of Benafee Where all the boys and girls are making out so free Up among the heather in the hills of Benafee Wedding's on a wednesday, everything's arranged Soon her name will change to mind unless her mind has changed With making the arrangements I'm feeling much deranged Marriage is an aweful undertaking Sure to be a grand affair, grander then a fair Gonna be a fork and plate for everyone whose there And I'll be a bugger if I don't gat my share If I don't I'll be very much mistaken Hope that helps, took me a long while to get my tongue around this song! (Unlike Clinton Hammond, GBS is my favorite band. I have it all :) |

Subject: RE: Great Big Sea Lyrics. Got any? From: JWB Date: 23 Dec 03 - 05:22 PM I've got bits and pieces of Mary Mac in my head from an old Clancys recording. I recall the beginning of that last verse being: It's going to be a grand affair, grander than a fair. There's going to be a coach and pair for every pair that's there. But then again, this could just be the mutterings of an old man in a Prozac fog. Merry and Happy, Jerry |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: songs by Great Big Sea From: GUEST Date: 02 Oct 15 - 01:54 PM Tommy Makem is credited as the author of Mary Mack. I recently heard the song "Up Among the Heather", sung by Jimmie MacGregor, as well as Alan Haynes, both Scottish performers from a slightly earlier era than Tommy (not by much), and that song has a strong resemblance to Mary Mack. I love both songs. Anybody know which came first and by how much? |
