Anne and I were booked as guests a few years back, and had the most fun we've ever had on a weekend in folk music (Sidmouth notwithstanding). We can't make it this year, but we've just made a decision that, hell or high water, we'll make it across the Pond for next year's do, and increase the number of English accents even more.

Have just started a Getaway Program Thread.

Please check in over there if you're really & truly coming: since we are the folks who put on the program for ourselves, I have to know who "we" are. I'll try to put together a preliminary list, but some of it will be guesswork. I've had a lot of good suggestions for workshops so far, will keep you up to date on the other thread as best I can as the program starts to take shape.

(This is a wee bit later than I usually start the program but that's not going to be a problem.)

I'm sorry to report that I won't get there, despite my earlier intention. My wife is having breast cancer surgery right about that time, and I'm pretty sure the timing will make it impossible for me to be away from Indianapolis that weekend. With that uncertainty, I won't spend the money registering, so even if I'm free to travel then it will be too close to the time.

I hope to you y'all next year, though.

I'm out of ink at the moment and I need to print the registration! (Of course, there's the chance that I won't have any money left after buying the ink, but I'll have to risk it.) I could print it in magenta or cyan - I still have some of those colors left, but I think I might get on someone's you-know-what list.

I'm looking for a ride to and from the Getaway from DC. I'm visiting my brother in Northwest (Friendship Heights) Is this a possibility for anyone? I can metro to a meeting spot pretty easily. I'll be able to leave early Friday afternoon and don't have to be back in the DC area until Monday afternoon. Glad to help schlep stuff if I can be helpful to organizers (although I and my fiddle and sleeping bag take up some space and may not fit in with all of the organizer stuff.)

We'd be happy to help with set up, registration, whatever. We arrive on Wednesday before and leave Tuesday after. I'm gettin' excited! I've sent what will have to pass for a registration (the damned printer wouldn't print the form!) and expect to be dragging my trailer into the lot sometime after noon on the Friday. I've been looking forward to seeing you folks all year long. (Fortunately, I have already seen some of you recently already and so it is a double blessing!)

Having the trailer there will be a novelty for me. It will be the first time I will be able to sleep at the Getaway in heated comfort (heh heh heh). There is sleeping space available for others, (how many is dependent upon how friendly they are,) if they can put up with my sonorous snoring. PM me if you have any interest.

OK, with just over two weeks to go, it's time to get my act together. And first of all, lift:

Is there a kind soul on wheels out there that would provide a weary traveller with a lift from Baltimore BWI airport to the Getaway?

I land at 16:15 on Friday 15/Oct; by the time I have been cleared through passports, customs etc, I suspect it will be closer to 17:30.

Two pieces of luggage - a smallish case and my sleeping bag; or just one suitcase, if I can fit the sleeping bag in it.

So, any takers? Pretty please? With olives on top?

and the folk music area of the Library of Congress is not too far away. Do that in the afternoon.

I agree with every one of those suggestions. The hot ticket right now is the Museum of the American Indian (hate that name). But if you have never been in the Capitol before, I must tell you that you need to walk into the Rotunda and spend an hour or so. I have been to DC so many times, usually on lobbying stuff for the Union, that I get a bit jaded. But one simply cannot walk into that Rotunda and not get a chill.

Peter, it's a heck of a thing for you to have to give up an entire weekend of music and camraderie because of the time on the road. I had to leave on Sunday morning one year, and I really missed that day's music. We need Star Trek type transporters!

El Greko, I would be happy to pick you up at BWI if you don't want to wait for Gary. Let's see, 16:15 is 4:15 in time-I-can-understand, and 17:30 is 5:30. That's the middle of rush hour, of course, but one can make allowance for that -- I should be able to show up there at about 5 p.m. I have a station wagon, and could probably accommodate two people and their stuff (within reason), so anyone else who needs a ride from BWI about that time should PM me, and we'll work it out.

Looks like I'll be able to come this year again after all -- last year was my first time back after years away, and it was as if I'd never left! And I SOOO enjoyed having Alaska Mike and Tawmee camped out in my driveway for several days after-- we had a marvelous time in Annapolis crashing Seamus (sp?) Kennedy's gig there. I apologize for being such a sucky correspondent, Mike!

If somebody needs a ride up Friday, coming back Sunday evening, I'll be happy to oblige. I live in Lanham MD near the New Carrollton metro (which is also an AMTRAK station), and I drive a Corolla wagon that can hold vast quantities of things and people. My plans Friday are flexible, but we'll need to leave room in the car for several plants, both ways -- I'll be ducking out of the Getaway for a few hours Saturday afternoon to go to a Plant Exchange the other side of Baltimore, should be back for dinner -- anyone want anything in particular? I know I'll have several Gladwin Irises to swap...

What kind of liquor d'you want me to put in the Killer Fudge Sauce this year? Last year it was Cointreau in one batch, Frangelico in the other...

LYNN!!! Its great to know you will be back. Having not heard from you in so long, I thought maybe you had been devoured by mutant, flesh eating show mice.

Bring lots of Killer Fudge Sauce. I couldn't believe how tasty that stuff was last year. After the jar broke, we had to suck the last remnants off the shards, but we managed to do it without bleeding to death. I wasn't about to throw any of it away.

I will be bringing some Alaska smoked salmon once again. People seemed to enjoy it last year and I've got plenty of fish in the freezer. Only 2 weeks to go!! Whoopie!!!

Bother!! Woodchucks, I just invested in cheap airline tickets because the trip, followed by sleep deprivation, followed by more travel was a bad idea. Check out Independence Air out of Burlington Puleeze!!!!!! (I know it's still expensive, but so is gas and wear and tear and missing folk music and . . . . )
