Big Mick recently sort of encouraged me come to this year's Getaway (after I told him how much I enjoy his Follow Me Up To Carlow/The Swallowtail on the Mudcat Blue Place Special) ;-D
and it looks like it fits my schedule. Having volunteered to be "bumped" on a recent flight, I now have a free ticket that I can use to get to DC or thereabouts (anywhere Alaska or American Airlines fly). So I'm seriously considering it. I'd love to get to meet you 'catters from remote places!

I just started reading this thread, so now I'll go catch up. What I need to find is more stuff about where to stay, carpooling or public transportation, and what the heck goes on (officially, at least) ;-) at the Gathering.

Charlie Baum posts the registration forms later in the Summer...(this camp has plenty of room, so no one need panic about getting in....but those who have a distance to travel should consider plane reservations based on the dates, times & ideas already posted. We can usually scare up rides from local airports...and BWI, as noted, is by FAR the closest.

Hope to see all those who are thinking about it!

Hi Genie, glad you can make it!

Hopefully your free airline ticket will allow you to fly into BWI (Baltimore-Washington Intl.), which is definitely the closest airport to the camp. As we get closer to the event, let folks know what time you'll be arriving, and someone will be able to pick you up. If it has to be some other airport, we can probably still help, especially if your arrival time is fairly early.

Accommodations at the Getaway are in group cabins, unheated but with real mattresses and indoor plumbing. You'll need to bring a sleeping bag or some other bedding (though if that's a problem we can usually arrange a loan) and warm clothes, as it gets fairly nippy in mid- to late October. The event and the camp are described pretty well here, and as for the spirit of the thing, see Ferrara's post of 09 Mar., 12:46 a.m. (she's a night person...) in this thread.

I've been coming to the Getaway for the last 30 years or so, and ALWAYS have a grand time. My kids have been coming since they were very small, and now that they're grown up they still try to make it whenever they can. In recent years we've had more and more Mudcatters join us, and they've made it even better!

Looking forward to meeting you!

Nancy

Someday!

Thanks, Nancy! I'll check to see if Baltimore's an option.
Shouldn't be a problem to bring bedding.

Thanks for the link. Ferrara, you're not the only night owl, y'know. ;-)   It'll be great to meet youse guys!

(See? I'm already talking like it's a done deal.) LOL

(Only thing is -- I hate to be a downer -- my dear sis is in critical condition. It has been touch and go for months now. I very well may need to use my free ticket to go be with her in Santa Rosa, if and when she's up to having visitors. Naturally, I hope she will pull through, and I hope I will be able to make the gathering this year. If for any reason I can't, I hope y'all have a great music gathering.
I'm getting the hang of this "getting bumped" thingy with the airlines, so if I don't make this year, maybe I'll have another free ticket next year.)

Ooh - sounds like a good workshop!
You're gonna kick yourself if you have that surgery and 4 weeks later are singing like Jenny Lind! (And you're probably gonna want to sue the surgeon to get your nuts back.)

Beardedbruce, I'm not sure the first night is good for that. Singing usually happens in the TV room, and lots of people are somewhat 'scattered', catching up with folks, and unwinding. (I'm manic for the first couple of hours after I get out of the car.) Plus, I might get there late and all the ginger, PB cups, tiramasu and cheese cake will be gone!

Cheesecake and tiramisu don't travel well but I can supply any amount of bourbon balls.

I have a second interview next week and have to negotiate time off in October or pass up the job. And I used to be so responsible...and financially soluble. Oh well.

Friday nite is sorta "make it up as you go" night, depending on who arrives when...we will try to have that bulletin board in the dining hall for announcements...-or you can just stand up and yell to collect folks for special events..*grin*

Dani..Rita is out of town until about Tuesday...detailed planning of workshops will start then..(as you see, a few have been percolating behind the scenes all summer)...I was convinced it was all magic until Rita took it on a few years ago, and now I know better. LOTS of emails and phone calls and post on Mudcat go into it...but if we know exactly WHO is coming and their wishes, suggestions, offers...etc., it makes sorting it all out a bit easier. It's rough having so many talents and ideas available that we can't possibly do them all...*grin*...

Toss in suggestions on this thread for a few days, I guess...but I will wait until Rita is home and let HER tell you how to contact her directly...
(PMs to Bill D or Ferrara will obviously be one way)

The announcement you've all been waiting for:

Get away from it all, at the height of the autumn color season, and make music together with your neighbors and musicians from all over the world. (Last year, people came in from as far away as California and England.) Camp Ramblewood is a lovely spot with lots of inviting places to jam or sing, from first light to the wee hours. There is plenty of beautiful land for walking and hiking and for kids to run around in

To register, you'll need to download the Registration Form (in .pdf format; opens with the free Acrobat Reader). Print it out and send it in (along with payment) to the Registrar, Dennis Cook. A description of the Getaway in also available in .pdf format.

For four decades, FSGW has held its Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting.

The Getaway is:

  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the pond, or by the pool;

  • Group singing and jamming at its best;

  • Informal workshops on singing, dancing, crafts and storytelling led by FSGW members and friends;

  • Trying a craft--quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;

  • Great food;

  • A wonderful weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;

  • A chance to renew old friendships and make new ones;

  • A beautiful camp with modern facilities in scenic rolling hills adjacent to the Susquehanna River;

  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing--or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.

The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three wonderful meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning.

FOOD, HOUSING, FEES AND OTHER LOGISTICS

Where, and How Long

This year's Getaway is scheduled at the height of Fall colors. Camp Ramblewood spreads out over rolling hillsides bordering the Susquehanna River just below the Conowingo Dam, north of Havre de Grace, Maryland. Camp Ramblewood is about 8 miles north of Exits 89 (Havre de Grace) or 93 (Port Deposit) of I-95. It's only 90 minutes North of the I-495 Beltway, in a direction far less subject to traffic jams than Virginia. You may choose to stay over either one, two, or three nights, or you may come for the day if you are unable to get away for the whole weekend. There is also the possibility of coming for the day without meals. (You must register in advance if you wish to dine!)

The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning. One-night registration gives you all meals and snacks on either Saturday or Sunday and, if you wish, a bed on either adjacent night.

Facilities

The dining hall, several common rooms, the pub, the drama barn, the dance barn (with a hardwood sprung floor), and the outdoor pavilion offer all-weather spaces for music making and dancing. NO SMOKING is allowed in any of the camp buildings.

If you choose to go to bed, there are more than 50 rooms, mostly in modern cabins. They feature indoor flush plumbing and hot showers; comfortable beds with box-spring mattresses (bring your own linens and bedding). There are handicapped-accessible cabins with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms for those who need them; please indicate any special needs when you register. Cabins are not usually heated (bring warm clothes!), although we will be permitted to bring low-wattage space heaters, providing they don't overwhelm the camp's electrical system (check with the organizers for details). You may also bring electric blankets and the like, and there are electical outlets in every cabin. If you prefer to bring a tent or your own RV, you may do so, and camp on the grounds (no discounts, but you get guaranteed privacy!). For those who are early-to-bed types (or have small children), a few cabins will be designated as quiet areas, with no singing after 10 pm. Other cabins will host singing all night (and we do mean ALL night!). Mention what sort of noise level you'd prefer, and we'll try to accommodate you.

If you don't want to sing, there's a pond with boats (and stocked with fish), tennis courts, ball fields, and a trail through the woods to the banks of the Susquehanna. The immediate area offers antiques, history and horse farms. (See more of Camp Ramblewood at its website: www.ramblewood.com.)

While the cabins have no central heat, we are permitted to bring electric space heaters (as long as we don't overload the fuses for any individual cabin!) Smoking is prohibited in any and every camp building.

Handicapped Accesibility

Camp Ramblewood is on a hillside. For folks who cannot manage the hill, a limited number of vehicles will be permitted to drive about the camp. Please contact the organizer, Charlie Baum at 301-587-2286 or special (at-sign) fsgw.org if you have mobility problems and would like a Ramblewood handicapped access pass, allowing you to drive up and down the hill.

Many buildings are wheelchair accessible, though some are not. With advanced notice, we will try to avoid scheduling things you might want to attend in those inaccessibile spaces. There are handicapped accessible cabins (ramped, with special bathrooms), and arrangements can be made to help people who need help negotiate the slopes of the site, but please let us know your needs when you register, or call the Getaway chair for details.

Special Guests

Every year, we invite some special guests to spark the music-making. Friends from all over the world who know about the Getaway through The Mudcat Cafe also show up. Sandy and Caroline Paton return this year, and people like Kendall Morse and Mick Lane have told us to expect them.

Fees

Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the registration form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event — food, camp rental, etc. We try to keep them as low as possible, but the event needs to cover its costs—unfortunately we've had to raise fees a little this year to keep from losing money. If you're not yet a member of the FSGW, but you join now, you will pay the lower member rates for the Getaway. The fee structure allows full-time students to attend at the same fee-rate as teenagers, to encourage attendance by college-age folks.

The entire fee structure is on the registration form, which you can download (in .pdf format; it opens with the free Acrobat Reader). Print it out and send it in (along with payment) to the Registrar, Dennis Cook.

For Children, a Kid-Friendly Environment

Activities for kids will include interactive games and stories and an evening campfire complete with singing, stories and marshmallows. If any parent would like to provide materials for a do-it-yourself crafts table or a toy chest (contributions of out-grown toys) please call Rita Ferrara at 301-946-2161.

Scholarships Help Is Available

We especially encourage families to come, and if the fees seem too steep, some scholarship money is available for those who need help in affording the Getaway, thanks to the Linda Lieberman/David Olive Memorial Fund . If you need assistance, contact the Getaway chair, Charlie Baum at getaway (at-sign) fsgw.org or 301-587-2286.

On the other hand, if you can afford to contribute to the scholarship fund, you'll help to interest the next generation in folk music. Remember that we hold a silent auction at the Getaway to help replenish the Lieberman/Olive fund--you may wish to bring items to auction off to help others who can't afford the whole cost of the weekend.

Volunteers Are Needed to Help with Some Tasks

We'll also need some volunteers to help out with some chores:

  • We need a few volunteers to help set up the camp on Friday afternoon.

  • We need volunteers to welcome guests and register them and make ID buttons.

  • We need to make sure the dining hall is cleaned up after the Friday night potluck.

  • We need to coordinate and provide shuttle service between workshop locations up and down the hill.

  • We need help to make sure everything is in order when we check out.

Call Rita at 301-946-2161 or Charlie at 301-587-2286 if you'd like to help.

Rita would also like an assistant program chair--if you think you'd like to volunteer to help (this is something that's done in the weeks prior to the Getaway), give her a call at 301-946-2161.

Getaway Activities at a Glance

Friday —

  • Register any time after 3 pm.
  • Potluck dinner, with new foods added as each person arrives.
  • Song swap and music-making into the wee hours.

Saturday —

  • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day.
  •         Saturday night concert (sign up to tell a story, present a short skit, tune or song).
  •         Singing and jamming together all night, as late as you care to stay (or stay up, if you're sleeping at camp).

Sunday —

  • Informal music, dance, crafts and storytelling workshops all day
  •         Sunday night concert (sign up if you didn't participate on Saturday).
  •         More singing and jamming after the concert, into the wee hours.

Monday —

  •         Parting songs.
  •         Farewell breakfast in the dining hall.

We tried to keep this year's price rise as minimal as possible, consistent with a need to not lose money on the event. We've restructured the day rates, but people who come for most or all of the event will have only a minimal increase.

A further sorry, but the only way to get the prices currently is to go to the FSGW Calendar (http://ceimd.com/fsgw/calendar.php3) and scroll down to October, or to download the Registration Form. the FSGW page that lists prices is generated forma database, and the webmaster hasn't set it up to generate the prices any other way. (This sentence will hopefully be obsolete in a few days.)

My registration will be posted later today. I am SO looking forward to this chance to meet some of the N.America-based Catters! Alaska Mike, are you up for some song-swapping?

a) BEGGING LIFTS : I'll be landing (BWI) at 16:15 on Friday - so should be out of the airport by 17:30 I guess - and also need to be at BWI by 18:00 on Sunday for the return flight

b) CAN ANYONE LEND A 12-string for the weekend? Otherwise I will be bringing my Yamaha. Never tried bringing an instrument on long-haul before, I confess to some trepidation about it.

Other than that - roll on October!

Hey George, I can't wait to swap some songs with you. Its a shame that you have to leave Sunday night before its over, but we'll just have to make the best of the time we are there.

*TRAVEL UPDATE: I have found a Greyhound bus that delivers me to Aberdeen, Maryland at about 4:30 pm on October 15th. This is 12 miles or so from Ramblewood to the south. Does anyone know of a shuttle bus or kind soul who could help me cover the last 12 miles?

*MAJOR THANKS to Big Mick for helping me get from the Getaway to Michigan afterwards. And thanks to the many others who offered their help.

See you all in a couple months.

El Greco (and Alaska Mike)..I am usually AT the camp by that time, but we will keep the thread alive and confer with locals.....we almost always find rides, especially when they are convenient, like from BWI or Aberdeen!...Lits of folks will be puttering up that way during those times.

It looks as if I will be flying in as well. I will post the time when I have it. El Greko - landing 3:15 on Friday and leaving 6PM Sunday?

Kendall may be bringing his 12-string.

I don't think my better one-third would let me, with 9 guitars in the house already... She's unreasonable like that.

The reservation for myself and Kris for all three nights went out this morning. We had to wait to find out if Kris could get Monday and Friday off.

As Getaway Virgins, we'll need help deciding what to bring and what not to.

I assume a warm sleeping bag (not a problem for Vermonters) and a couple of instruments - one good and one not so good. Clothes - do we need anything beyond jeans and sweatshirts; or shorts and tee shirts if we get lucky on weather?

Does the camp have an alcohol policy - negative, positive, or laizzez-faire?

P.

Bring warm clothes. It gets mighty chilly at night. Warm bedding, no heat in the rooms. Don't worry about booze unless you plan to drive.
Instruments are left lying around at all hours so bring your best.

I am starting to get very excited about this one. It is shaping up to be an even more wonderful gathering than the usual spectacular.

Rita, I assume it was you that called. The answer is an emphatic YES that I will be there.

All the best,

Mick

we are fortunate that at this camp, we don't have to to be coy about alcohol as we did in former years. Be reasonable, but enjoy your favorite libation. (There were some amazing stories about beer runs told by the Shellbacks and their guides last year..*grin*).

(yeah, Mick, that was Rita..good to know you'll be back)

Yep, Bill, wouldn't miss it for the world. I will be in touch when I am back from Toronto.

BTW, I will be on "Acoustic Workshop" tonight with Heather. Hope some 'Catters will listen in.

All the best,

Mick

Okay, Bill 'er Rita, I know I keep askin' but is it too late to get accomodations. If so, what's close and are other folks staying there so maybe some designation drunk/designated driver stuff can be arranged?

Plus, do you need anyone to do a blues workshop fir kids 'er folks that ain't learnt the basics...

Bobert

well..registration has just begun,Bobert...you can look at the link in Charlie Baum's post above. The camp is way bigger than WE are likely to fill...no problem having a place. As to blues, I dunno...it's on the thread now...maybe some other blues folks like Joel or Max or Roger from Baltimore can tell you what the situation is..I know you'll get a chance to PLAY blues...it always happens..

Bobert - Max does a blues workshop and I have heard rumors of a jug band. I am trying to figure out how to get a ten pound jug past airport security.

Why should that be a problem? I know of a lady with two of them, she has no problem getting on the plane..

(Sorry, saw a cheap shot and couldn't resist.)

Peter.
