There's a web like a Spider's web
Made of silk and lighter fibers
Spun by the moon in my room at night.
It's a web made to catch a dream.
Hold it close to lie awake and
as if to tell me that dreamin's alright.

Mr Moon, Mr Moon, you're out too soon,
The sun is still in the sky.
Go back to your bed and cover up your head,
And wait til the day goes by.

In my council (River Bend, at that time) we always paired that song with one we called "From Out the Battered Elm Tree," and half the group would sing Mr. Moon while the other sang this:

From out the battered elm tree the owl's cry we hear;
And from the distant forest the cuckoo answers clear:
Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Cuckoo - oo - oo - oo - oo
Cuckoo, Cuckoo, Cuckoo - ooo ooo ooo ooo.

I'll have to check the book that they made to go with it. I recognized some from my own youth, like Tom Glaser's On Top of Spaghetti and Gee Ma, I Want to Go Home (a Girl Scout Camp version). Others were completely new to me. It was quite an experience. I'll post it in a day or two. There were 23 songs, all told.

The question was asked last year whether Girl Scouts still sing. I recently married a woman who has a daughter in Girl Scouts. Her troop was working on their Silver Award and planning to go around to the younger troops and give concerts of Girl Scout songs to pass it along. My stepdaughter realized that I have a computerized recording setup and got the idea to make CDs for all the troops. That way they would have a permanent copy to refer to.

So, we set up a recording session. Imagine working with a dozen 15-year-olds. What a blast! A couple of natural leaders presented themselves and they all worked together. I was really pleased to see them in action and grateful for the opportunity to be part of it.

In my small area of Maryland, the music is alive and well.

I can remember singing the "Spider's Wed" when I was a Girl Scout. It was back in the early 1970s at a resident camp called Camp Hilaka, someplace in Summit County, Ohio. I can remember one of the counselors telling us girls that the song Spider's Web" had its origins from from the heyday of the California missions.

I had learn these lyrics:

There's a web like a spider's web
made of silk and light and shadow
spun by the moon in my room at night
it's a web made to catch a dream
hold it tight till i awaken
as if to tell me, my dream is all right

down in the valley
there is a mission
by the old oak tree
down by mission
there is a fountain
where my love told me (chorus)

I'm thrilled to find this site in general and in particular the words I was missing to "Birthright"! But of the words I did remember, neither version here is exactly as I learned it:

Birthright

We who were born in country places,
Far from the city and shifting faces,
We have a birthright no man can sell,
And a secret joy no man can tell.

For we are kindred to lordly things,
Wild duck's flight and the white owl's wings
Two, pike and salmon, three, bull and horse,
Curlew's cry and the smell of gorse.

Bridle traces, swiftness of streams,
Magic of frost has shaped our dreams,
No baser vision the spirit thrills,
Than to walk by night on the naked hills.

We sang it as a round at GS Camp Narrin in Ortonville, Michigan in the 1960's. The area around the camp was farmland then, but suburbia had encroached by the time I was a GS leader in the 1990's.

Just wondering, do kids still sing songs in Girl Scouts and Cub scouts?   I know my granddaughters troops never did.   I think it just isn't considerer 'cool' to sing anymore. Sad.   I loved to sing when I was a kid.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spider's Web
Down in the valley,
There's a mission
By the old oak tree
By the mission,
There's a fountain
Where my love told me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silk and light and shadow
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
On the evening
I was leaving
My love dreamt of me
I was sleeping,
She was weeping
So she said to me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
I met a stranger,
His name was Danger
We rode side by side
Down in Santa Fe,
I killed a man they say
Danger told me, "Ride!"
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
And now if I return,
They will hang me
From the old oak tree
By the mission,
Near by the fountain
Where my love told me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silk and light and shadow
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch your dreams
Hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me that my dreamin's all right
As noted in thread 1143 and others, "Rose, Rose" has not been found in any of the older rhyme books. Rose, Rose
Speculation as to origin remains just that. All verses beyond the first seem to be add-ons or floaters.
Eight threads on Rose, plus scouting and other threads on children's songs.
Regarding the Rose song,
I have a song book with the latest date of 1947 in it, that has Rose:
Rose, rose, rose, rose, shall I ever see thee red?
Aye, marry, that thou wilt, If thou but stay.
It is true, that Elizabeth of York who was of the white rose (House of York's), and Henry VII (father of Henry VIII), of the red rose (House of Lancaster).
This might be a place for a link that I found in the bottom of a pile "to look at later."
Pack 86
These are Cub Scout songs rather than Girl Scout, but of course these days things are much more coed than when I was a kid.
A second link that I recorded in the same document, at More Cub Scouting Songs, did not come up when I tried it just now. It may be gone or just down temporarily.
The first site says it will print "over 100 pages" if you just hit the print button. I copied and pasted into a .doc, since I really did plan to go back through them in more detail. Content from the two sites, as I saved them, is about 103 pages of lyrics in my Word file.
May rather vague recollection is that the two sites were linked when I found them, so they may have merged both of them into the one "page."
I learned and actually turned around and taught this song at a Camp Fire Camp. I was a Campfire girl for 12 years, and a counselor for at least 12 years all at Campfire camp. I suspect, this is just one of those songs that get passed around and around from camp to camp. I personally would just like to know where it came from.
One of my favorites, which I'm sure you heard also, was:
Rose, rose, rose rose,
Will I ever see thee red
I will marry at thy will sire
At thy will.
I was taught that this came from the time of the War of the Roses in England and that the woman was of the White rose, and she loved a man of the Red rose. Interestingly Henry the VI and his wife were of the two different colors, and their marriage ended this war. Also interestingly, it is all natural minor, which would fit the time period, and Henry VIII (Henry the VI's son), is reported to have written Greensleeves. My dream would be to put together a book that goes into the histories of some of these camp songs of which I have now, mostly just in my head.
Guest CDYE,
The "shoes & stockings" one you want might be this one, from Switzerland, as I learned it from my Mom (long-time Girl Scout).
Weggis Song
From Lucerne to Weggis on
Hol di ri dia, Hol di ria
Shoes and stockings we have none
Hol di ri dia, Hol dia
Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-ria
Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-dia
Weggis starts the highest hill
Hol di ri dia, Hol di ria
Boys & girls climb with a will
Hol di ri dia, Hol dia
Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-ria
Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-di-re-dia, Hol-dia
My aunt's old hand written & typed songbook has "Shoes nor stockings need we don" as the second line. I'm sure it could also have been translated as you remember it. Aunt Martha's book also has this for the second verse: "On the lake we all shall go / See the pretty fish below" but I always liked keeping it with just the mountain climbing verses.
Can anyone help me with yet another GS song? I can't quite remember it all, but I think it goes(except for the la la's..):
BIRTHRIGHT
We who are born in country places
Far from the city and shifting faces
We have a birthright no man can sell
And a secret joy no man can tell.
For we are kindred to lordly things
The wild ducks flight and la la la
Pike and salmon, bull and horse
The curlew's cry and the smell of gorse.
Pride of la, swiftness of stream
The magic of frost has shaped our dreams
No baser vision the spirit fill
Than to walk by right on the naked hill.
I checked the database, but didn't find anything.
Heh heh,
Speaking of pretty songs, I am reminded of "Barges", but speaking of songs we sang wwaaayyy too often, try this:
Out of my tent flap looking in the night
I can see the boy scouts' flickering light
Silently go the boy scouts to the shore
And the girl scouts meet them at the door
Boy Scout, I would like to go with you
I would like to ride in your canoe
Boy Scouts, over mountains you may roam
In a pup tent always you're at home.
Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.
It's a short song, but we always sang it as a round...could go on forver that way.
We also sang The Happy Wanderer WAY too much.
I learned the song a little differently in that it was "Down in the valley There is a fountain by an old oak tree. Near the fountain, there is a mission, where my love told me..."
Jim Speirs of Canada has a lot of scouting songs on his website, btw.
there is a sorority at my school who has a song with a very similar chorus, only it's a kite, not a spider's web. just found that kind of amusing.
i was in girl scouts for eleven years and thought i knew most of the common songs (i've been putting together all the lyrics i know for over seventy songs for my sister) thanks for a new one!
^^SPIDER'S WEB
author unknown
Down in the valley,
There is a mission
Down by the old oak tree
Down by the mission,
There is a fountain
Where my love told me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
On the evening
I was leaving
My love dreamed of me
I was sleeping,
She was weeping
When she said to me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight ‘til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
I met a stranger,
His name was Danger
We rode side by side
Way down in Santa Fe,
I killed a man they say
Danger told me, "Ride!"
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight ‘til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
And now if I return,
They will hang me
High from the old oak tree
Down by the mission,
Down by the fountain
Where my love told me:
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight ‘til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
Well, I e-mailed my kid sister, who claims to be an expert on Girl Scout songs, and this was her reply:
Dear Joe,
I'll have to think about your recent request. I know that chorus and love it, but have always hated the verses - they're very sinister, black, macabre, something feeling. It's as if the singer wants to talk about having bad dreams, I guess. I've always made a point of not learning the verses, although I remember something about "...a stranger, his name was danger..." and "they took my life one day..." If I looked, I might be able to find them somewhere, but I don't want to, at least not now.
The chorus used to be sung at the beginning (and maybe the end too) of a public radio children's story show, before and when my kids were little. It has a lovely tune, and I've sung it to my family a great number of times.
I guess her older brother will have to bug her a bit more for the lyrics, but I thought her commentary might be of interest. I guess I do remember her singing it. I sang mostly beer commercial jingles at the time...
We did not sing that in my troop. A hint when looking for girl scout songs: the filename begins with gs, so a search for gs* yields 11 songs, 6 of which are scouts. There are others I learned in scouts, but those are specifically girl scout songs. Also a search for scouts gets 25 hits (boy, girl, and military)
I remember hearing this song while sitting around the campfire in Girl Scouts....I really liked it....but I can't remember the name or all the words....please help!
This is what I can remember (as best I can remember):
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver, light and shadow
Spun by the moon in my room last night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight til I awaken
As if to tell me my dream is all right
