Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Wesley S Date: 16 Feb 05 - 04:18 PM I thought I saw an ad for the Texan in a recent magazine featuring Peter Frampton. They might be making that model again. I could be wrong. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: curmudgeon Date: 16 Feb 05 - 04:43 PM The last one of these I saw was the one Chris Smither was playing back in the late 60s. It had a great tone and very low action, a real pleasure to play. And in his hands of course, a true marvel -- Tom |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Metchosin Date: 16 Feb 05 - 04:54 PM I used to have one but sold it to Byron Marks, now living in Oregon. I could get in touch with him to see what happened to it if you want. |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Jim Tailor Date: 16 Feb 05 - 05:20 PM What's the reason for the inquiry? It might help with the responses. I've played a few of them over the years. ...of course, after the J300 inquiry, folks may be a bit hesitant to put lotsa time in a resonse here. |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: open mike Date: 16 Feb 05 - 05:35 PM did you see the picture i sent of my partner's Gibbo-phone clone? i think it might be the frontier...with rope and cactus on the pick guard. http://www.mudcat.org/photos/photo_page.cfm?file_name_sent=open_mike Bob's is an unusual one with a gibson head stock! i can't find the thread where the Frontier was first discussed. |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Lanfranc Date: 16 Feb 05 - 06:13 PM A friend of mine, Tony Virgo, had one back in the 60s. I played it a few times but had trouble with its rather narrow fingerboard. Al Stewart used to play one back in the old Bunjies days, and might still. Alan |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Greycap Date: 17 Feb 05 - 03:00 AM I think Wizz jones got one after his 'La Foley' retired. Could be wrong-passing of the years hasn't sharpened some facts. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Guest G. Date: 17 Feb 05 - 02:49 PM I think Macca used to appear solo decades ago to sing Blackbird,Yesterday etc.with an upside-down Texan. The UK comic/singer Richard Digance also appeared with one,or something similar. I noticed because I have the smaller version,The Cortez, purchased approx 1965-couldn't afford a Gibbo&thought I was getting second best.Quite wrong-although made by Gibson they sound different(all other things being equal)-twangier IMHO,lovely instrument.Cheers. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Virginia wood butch-er Date: 21 Feb 05 - 10:23 PM To burntstump; I have a epiphone Texan, style FT79N, Serial #120357. Bought it around 1968 second hand for $50 or $75, while in Air Force. Played a few years then stopped. Always wondered if it was worth anything. I don't know shit about guitars or how these threads work. Looks to be in great condition, been kept in ragged old case. Any one out there who can educate me ???? |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Virginia wood butch-er Date: 24 Feb 05 - 08:32 PM To burntstump; Thanks Much for your offer of assistance with finding info re; my 1963, Epi. TEXAN, but hooked up with a local place in Fredericksburg VA USA (Pickers Supply). Good people, really know their stuff. I believe all are performers. Don't think I'll sell yet, might just start playing again, now that I'm retired and got the time. Man hate the thought of breaking in the fingers again. Take Care Many Thanks To open mike; Considered your offer but not enough. If I do sell I will contact you first, but your going to have to sweeten the deal, like throwing in one of your cows or pigs. Then again, never mind I have enough problems the the woman I have, I don't need one of yours. Sorry !!!!But your not the only comedian out here. Piece The Virginia Wood butch-er. |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 25 Feb 05 - 08:17 PM Slightly off topic (sorry), but has anyone else noticed that the European Union currency unit, the euro, is represented by a symbol almost identical to the trademark on Epiphone guitars. Interesting to contemplate the outcome of a lawsuit by Epiphone, against the European Parliament, for using their registered mark. DT |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: burntstump Date: 26 Feb 05 - 03:32 AM Hi Glad to hear you are going to start playing again. If you decide to sell in the future, I will give the Texan a good home at a good price. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Metchosin Date: 02 Mar 05 - 12:40 PM I think my brother and his friends originally talked me into buying this guitar years ago, probably because it looked cool to them and they figured they could borrow it from me. As I mentioned on another thread, it was not the guitar for my personal musical intentions at the time, not only was the skinny neck a problem for me, it had such a large lower bout, I could barely get my arm over it. LOL Good luck in your search. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Newbie Date: 12 Mar 05 - 03:35 PM Hi Iv'e got an Epiphone FT79N that I Bought in the 70's second hand I recently had an appraisle By Elderly instruments and a dating from Gibson (the current owner of Epiphone guitars) and they told me according to their records my guitar was made in 1962. And if Elderly instruments were selling it today it would be about $2000 - $3000 Iv'e met and played along side Jack Hudson and to my knowledge he hasn't gigged with his since the 80's when he bought his Martin Also Richard Digance has another Natural Texan and on one occasion We picked each others guitar up to pack up The biggest problem I'm finding is getting reasonably priced insurance to gig with mine and I have recently bought two other modern guitars to take its place on stage A Cort Parlour Guitar and a Crafter Auditorium Model |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST Date: 17 Feb 06 - 11:50 PM yes, i have a '67 Epiphone Texan, model FT79N (Natural), made at the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It has a natural spruce solid top, light natural Honduras mahogany back, sides and neck, with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. and it has Kluson 301-v metal keys, which changed from plastic. great neck and awesome sound, i have owned and played this for many years. jeff |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Dippy Date: 04 Mar 06 - 02:21 AM Yes, I have an Epiphone Texan, c. 1955, made by the original Epiphone factory. I checked with Gibson, it was made before Gibson bought the Epiphone company and has a very low serial number, so Gibson Co. thinks it is a 1955 -1956 at the latest. It is gorgeous, with a jumbo body, a speed neck, lots of mother of pearl and real ivory. It has beautiful action, and, as you know, the most wonderful sound in the world. I have owned it since I bought it 2nd hand in the early 60's. |

Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: GUEST,Maurice Date: 06 Aug 06 - 03:34 PM The Paul McCartney model has been reissued and endorsed by him. Part of the price goes to one of his charities (elimination of landmines, I think) |
Subject: RE: Epiphone Texan anyone got one? From: Wesley S Date: 15 Jan 07 - 11:39 AM I saw Tom Rush Saturday night performing with one a Texan. He says his first one burned up in a housefire and that two of his fans gave him theirs so that he would still have one. It had a great sound. OH - and the airlines lost his two guitars - the Texan and a D sized made by some small luthier. They finally showed up just half an hour before the show. |
