Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: Bettynh Date: 04 Apr 12 - 07:11 PM Here's an episode of the radio series. This was from WGBH Boston radio in the late 70s (I think). Could the singer have been Tony Saletan? He did several folksong programs for kids on WGBH TV before NPR/PBS was a reality. |
Subject: Camp Tattapanum alumni From: GUEST,Burnie Date: 01 Jul 12 - 12:36 PM I worked as a camp counselor at Camp Tattapanum summer of 1974 and then returned as assistant director for the summer of 1975. I was a college student from Kansas at that time and my camp name was "Burnie". The director's name was Gloria. I don't remember many campers or even the counselors anymore... it's been so long. The memories have faded over time, but I remember having tons of fun with the kids and other counselors. It was a wonderful experience that I treasure. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,ARC Date: 09 Aug 12 - 08:20 PM http://youtu.be/ZaSQnAG8JY4 Not the best version but gives you an idea of the tune, which is actually the same as the "Gallow Hill Reel." I spent over 20 years looking for "Spider's Web" lyrics; finally found them several years ago on Google. It was my very favorite Girl Scout camp song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,Lark Date: 24 Aug 12 - 01:55 PM Here is the version we sang: SPIDER'S WEB CHORUS: There's a web like a spider's web Made of silver light and shadow Spun by the moon in my room at night It's a web made to catch a dream Hold me tight 'til I awaken As if to tell me that dreaming's all right Down in the valley, there's a mission By the old oak tree By the mission, there's a fountain Where my love told me On the evening I was leaving My love came to me I was sleeping, she was weeping And she said to me I met a stranger, his name was Danger We walked side by side Down in Santa Fe, I killed a man they say Danger told me to ride Now if I return, they will hang me 'Neath the old oak tree By the mission, near the fountain Where my love told me |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,RJ Lewis Date: 27 Aug 12 - 11:02 AM I remember this song from YMCA/YWCA camp in northern Minnesota in the early- mid 70's. Thanks for sharing, as all I could remember was the chorus. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,Guest, Mary Date: 09 Aug 13 - 09:06 PM My daughter loves to hear this song at night right now--I looked online to see if there were verses I didn't know about. I learned it in 1982 at a girl scout camp called Mitre Peak just outside of Alpine, Texas. The tune was slightly different, as were the words, in which we sang "a web that I weave in my room each night." I loved the idea that I was creating my own dreams, good and scary, and that remembering the dream was a sign it ended all right. I also sang "made of silver shining shadows" but I bet I just heard it wrong! Thanks to everyone for posting the lyrics, etc--a 15 year thread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST Date: 25 Feb 16 - 11:57 PM that is the one I learned at Camp Mary White in the 60's There is a fountain In a valley By a big oak tree And by that fountain In the valley My love first told me: (chorus) There's a web like a spider's web Made of silver light and shadow That I weave in my room each night It's a web made to catch a dream And hold it there until I waken There to tell me, my dream is all right I met a stranger His name was Danger We traveled side by side But then in Santa Fe I shot a man one day And I had to ride And if they catch me They will hang me From the big oak tree Down in the valley By the fountain Where my love told me: (Chorus) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,Guest Date: 29 Apr 16 - 11:24 PM I learned the song at Camp Indian Run in about 1971. Same as above except: "If I return, they will hang me..." I sang it as a lullaby to my kids. Has anyone figured out its origins? Miriam |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,Sbg Date: 17 Feb 19 - 06:26 PM And I learned it in the mid-1960s at a YWCA camp in Wisconsin, Camp Talaki. I found this site while googling to find out what the origin of the song was; I remembered the tune and the words – at least I thought I did! Until today, I always thought it was “made of silk and light of shadow.” That’s pretty, too. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Spider's Web From: GUEST,Marsha Grover Keller Date: 20 May 22 - 12:33 PM So interesting how things morph over the years and tellings. Not sure if this is already well documented, but none of the words that I learned in the 70's are here. Also learned it at Liahona girls camp in No. Cal, and the midi tune posted is similar but quite different in places. We also sang is as a round, which is very pretty. Here is how we sang it. - There's a web like a spiders web, made of silver light and shadow Hung by the moon in my room at night. IT's a web made to catch your dreams hold them fast till I awaken as if to tell me my dreams are alright. Then - a tag after There's a web A spider's web Hung by the moon in my room at night it's a web a spider's web as if to tell me my dreams are alright. The other person sings this - then they switch. Down in the valley there is a meadow down by the old oak tret Down in the meadow there is a river where my dreams flow free. |
