Subject: RE: Origin: Good Morning Blues (Leadbelly?) From: GUEST,Joseph Scott Date: 27 Jun 20 - 02:49 AM “I woke up this morning with the blues all 'round my bed” is in W.C. Handy's "Shoeboot's Serenade," 1915. The "blues how do you do" stuff is in Bessie Smith by 1923 and I don't know of any evidence for it from the '10s. Leadbelly liked to listen to records by Bessie, Leroy Carr, Roosevelt Sykes, Washboard Sam, etc. |

Subject: RE: Origin: Good Morning Blues (Leadbelly?) From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Mar 10 - 01:07 PM Michael Taft's Pre-War Blues Lyrics Concordance is a great resource, if you can get the hang of using it: 1. On the top line, click the first letter of a word you want to look for. (I started with "W" for "woke.") 2. In the left panel, find the word you're looking for. (In this case, you've got to scroll to the bottom of the list and click the downward-pointing finger to bring up the next page, and do this twice until you see "WOKE." Right away it tells you there are 147 occurrences of "woke" in the database.) 3. Click the word. ("WOKE") 4. In the middle panel, in the left column, you will see excerpts from lyrics that contain the word "woke." In the right column is the discographical information. If you click on the discographical citation, it will bring up the complete lyrics of the song in the bottom panel. 5.
