“I woke up this morning with the blues all 'round my bed” is in W.C. Handy's "Shoeboot's Serenade," 1915.

The "blues how do you do" stuff is in Bessie Smith by 1923 and I don't know of any evidence for it from the '10s. Leadbelly liked to listen to records by Bessie, Leroy Carr, Roosevelt Sykes, Washboard Sam, etc.

I looked at this thread last week and forgot to leave a thank you for Jim Dixon. Michael Taft's Pre-War Blues Lyrics Concordance is an incredible site. I've been looking for some half-remembered songs on it and have found a couple. Tricky to navigate but a nice site. Thanks for posting that.

GR8 Jim,

Now I need to figure out where I learned these lyrics:

Woke up this morning blues all around my bed,
Woke up this morning blues all around my bed,
Picked up my pillow, blues all under my head.

Michael Taft's Pre-War Blues Lyrics Concordance is a great resource, if you can get the hang of using it:

1. On the top line, click the first letter of a word you want to look for.
(I started with "W" for "woke.")

2. In the left panel, find the word you're looking for.
(In this case, you've got to scroll to the bottom of the list and click the downward-pointing finger to bring up the next page, and do this twice until you see "WOKE." Right away it tells you there are 147 occurrences of "woke" in the database.)

3. Click the word. ("WOKE")

4. In the middle panel, in the left column, you will see excerpts from lyrics that contain the word "woke." In the right column is the discographical information. If you click on the discographical citation, it will bring up the complete lyrics of the song in the bottom panel.

5. If your browser has the ability to highlight the word or phrase you are searching for, I recommend you use it.

Here's what I found, in order by year:

Woke up this morning : blues all around my bed
--Anna Jones, TRIXIE BLUES, 1923

Now I woke up this morning mama : blues all around my bed
--Sam Butler, CAN'T KEEP NO BROWN, 1926

--Frank Stokes, SWEET TO MAMA, 1927

I wake up this morning : blues all around my bed
--Wiley Barner; IF YOU WANT A GOOD WOMAN, GET ONE LONG AND TALL, 1927

Woke up early early this morning : with the blues all around my bed
--Vol Stevens, COAL OIL BLUES, 1928

Woke up early this morning : blues all around my bed
--Vol Stevens, PAPA LONG BLUES, 1928

This blues is an old blues way before Leadbelly who picked it up and learned it.

Anyone?

Fun, Roger. Reminds me of Martin Mull's "Middle Class Blues":

I woke up this afternoon and I saw both cars were gone (x2)
I felt so bad and lowdown, I threw my drink across the lawn.

Additional verses: Blues ain't nothin' but a poor workin' man feelin' bad (x2)
Lost his house, lost his wife, lost the best job he ever had.

Sent for you yesterday, here you come walkin' today (x2)
Got your mouth wide open but (for once) not a word to say.

And my own Suburban Blues version:

Woke up this mornin' blues all around my duvet (x2)
Au pair brought my breakfast, there was blues all in my muesli.

Good Morning Blues by Huddie Ledbetter (AKA Lead Belly) You tube version- Walking bass- played on twelve string:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh-hr2YxwoY

Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?
Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?
I'm doin' all right, good mornin' how are you?

I laid down last night, turning from side to side,
Oh, turning from side to side.
I was not sick, but I was just dissatisfied.

I got up this mornin', blues walkin' 'round my bed.
Oh, with blues walkin' 'round my bed.
I went to eat my breakfast, blues all in my bread.

Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?
Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?
I'm doin' all right, good mornin' how are you?

Oh a brown skin woman make a, moon-eyed man go blind.
Ah, she will make a moon-eyed man go blind.
And a chestnut woman make you take your time.

"Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?"
Good mornin' blues, blues how do you do?"
"I'm doin' all right, good mornin' how 'bout you?"

Hi,

I noticed Leadbelly's version here but the lyrics seem wrong. I was wondering what the early versions of this blues are and the whole conversation with the blues genre?

I did a video to help people learn to play steady bass and here's the performance part on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoPq37fdXis

The learn to play video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC499vEc970

Any info on this song with the "Woke up this morning blues around my bed" or "Good Morning blues, how do you do?" lines whould be gr8,

TY

Richie
