A friend of mine tried to start a song from her girl scout days and couldn't pull it out of her hat. She is a mom (age 38) with three little children and loosing her long term memory! I think this tune will revive her. The only thing she could remember was a very luring reference to a cabin along a stream... Any help from other 38 year old girl sc

CD/rabbitrunning! Welcome to the Mudcat! My sister used to be a counselor over near Colorado Springs, oh shoot can't remember the name of it, but she sang I Know A Place in HearMe not too long ago, which is the virtual song circles we have here at the Mudcat.

My mom had four girls, all girl scouts. I was the youngest and the funny thing about that song is that up until a year ago, my little child memory thought my sister had written it after she was so inspired by a special place she'd found at GS camp in Colorado where we grew up! That's what I thought I heard when I was little and we just never talked about it much, until last year when one of us happened to mention it.

I _loved_ "Suitors". And "Father Father Goodbye", too.

One of the reason I signed up is because I have all these fading dittosheets and handwritten notes of Girl Scout songs and I'm going to inundate you poor defenseless people with them.

And Kat, I, too, am the youngest girl of four girls (with a tagalong boy behind me) and we were all scouts. My mother used to threaten us with Frank Sinatra on the radio, so we sang a lot on car trips. And they almost never let _me_ sing the descants! *outraged look* Mitch Miller didn't mind!

No descants? I can relate, rabbitrunner. Three out of the five of us used to sing a lot and I, as the youngest ALWAYS got stuck singing the HORN verse of the "Orchestra Song!" I haven't let them forget about that either!

(fortunately, "The Orchestra Song" was the subject of another thread, so I don't have to ask the dumb question after all...)

I always thought that the best thing about camp was singing songs that made harmony. Like "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". It just never sounded the same with only four of us to sing it. And we could only do four parts instead of eight for "Warsaw the Forty Second". But I still remember all those car trips with great fondness. Better than my sisters do, I think!

The tune my neighbor was looking for was "The Little Green Valley." Thanks! It was so neat to bring the lyrics to this friend and also have her daughter learn the song (who has just returned from her first girl scout camp). Then...when my neighbor read the name of rabbitrunning, she almost fell off of her chair. She had learned "The Little Green Valley" from a counselor named Rabbit from Rockhill (I think I have that right). Is it a small world or a coincidence.

Now who has or is making field recordings of these great girl scouts of the past and present. My neighbor friends entertained me for a good while with tunes and stories. Did Alan Lomax forget the girl scouts?

No, I was at Flying G Ranch, which is Mile Hi Council, and I think that Sky High is the Colorado Springs Council. Not that Flying G wasn't fairly close to Pikes Peak, mind you.

I worked as "packout" (general kitchen aid and lord high admiral of all the pantries) one year, but my nickname was "Scratch".

I wish someone _did_ make a recording of all the girl scout stuff. Some of our versions were downright purty.

What's Job's Daughters? I went to church camp, but it was co-ed.

I went to scout camp in NY state, too, but it was Camp Hoover, in Tully. The scouts knew from the first campfire that I was musically "challenged", and they'd make me "sing" the part that went "boom-da boom-da boom-da boom-da.........." while they sang "sarasponda sarasponda sarasponda ret-set-set.." What a downer! Though it was better than music teachers who would have me sing softly, or mouth the words!!! I think my favorite was "The Ashgrove".

This was all done to a complex pantomime, and then repeated about 8 times, each time omitting one more verse from the singing-just doing the hand motions for it.

Boy, I'm sorry I'm so late getting to this thread. There is a tape/CD or of some of the GS songs. i haven't seen it, just know there is one. I wonder if the 'good songs' are on it? I'll see if I can get more info tomorrow. It sounds like I know older songs than most of you, but I think they are the same. I'm push the dirt up, almost. It was itnterting to read the Flying G is taking credit for I Know a Place. When I worked at Sky High we were told that it was written there. I don't remember who wrote it and I guesss it really doesn't matter it's a great song. Gee Kat, you thought I wrote it? Hey we had a cousin theat worked a Flying G i don't know her came name put Mary Louise worked there one summer. I spent many..6-7-8 years working atvarious jobs a Sky Hi or Sacajawea in Wyo. I counceled, was a unit leader many times,had the CIT unit and was assistant camp director (hated that one). We loved the food people! Thanks for keeping the tummies full. bet

I don't know if Flying G was "officially" taking credit for it. I just know that there was a place (walking up to Prospector I think) where you could see Pikes' and one time when I was walking there with a bunch of campers, someone told us that it was the inspiration point for "I know a place". Not a counselor, I think.

Did you sing "Counselor Blues", too? It was one of my fondest memories of that tail end of camp when we we're cleaning up and tucking everything away for the next year.

(That and "but you MUST pay the rent...")

"I know a Place" was written for Flying "G" and copyrighted as well in the mid '60's I think. Mile High Council has the information and it's published in the council songbook. On a sad note, Mile Hi has decided to sell Flying "G" this summer. It is currently listed at 2.5 million. Anybody have a spare million or two that needs a home?

With fond memories of Flying G - "Dutch" was head of camp when I was there - late 1940's - early 50's. Does anyone remember "Horse and Goggle"? Singing after meals was the best part. I can't believe it is no longer.

"I Know a Place" was written by Nancy Child, a camper at Flying G, some time in the early 1960s. She should get credit for this long-standing favorite. In my mind, she captured Wigwam Creek at Flying G, its two meadows, and the mountains around. Thanks, Nancy, if you're out there.

I was told that "wall saw" meant we all saw, and "Zumdeba" meant some of them.   ???

I was in the Girl Scouts in the 1950's, so it is a surprise the way some of these songs are still in memory.

I'm glad to finally know the history of "I know a place". I sang it from '76 to'78 at Pine Creek Girl Scout Camp in Shoup, Idaho. My mom Pat was our troop leader and another lady named Debbie taught us the song. Funny to think it had been around for nearly 20 years before I ever heard it and it fit Pine Creek so perfectly. We were some lucky girls to have such a beautiful place to camp. Thanks for reminding me of the second verse too. I remember that I learned what a "ravine" was from that song. I was only 6!!! Oh, now I have that song on my mind!

I was at girls' camp starting in 1976 (at Brighton, at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon just east of Salt Lake City) and learned I Know a Place then. I've been singing it to my boys at night since they were very young. In fact, most of the songs are familiar.

After every meal was finished, and before the singing started, the groups at each table would pound three times and then shout some tidbit of information in unison. For example, one table might shout, "Sprig's group is ready to hike!" and another group would shout, "We'll beat you to the top of Mount Majestic!" That pounding and shouting was what we called Horse and Goggles.

I have been looking for the words to this song for so long!! I am a former girl scout, but learned it as an adult and parent through Marriage Encounter meetings. I am 57, learned it in 1981. I sang it to my infant son to go to sleep by and have been trying to remember the words. I sing parts of to my grandson but could not remember all the verses. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

This is Coke from Flying G, '77. Oh what a summer. You were my bestie, I had such a hard time and you were always there for me. Remember going down to your family's place in Denver, the ice cream shop, and we played Star Trek in the park (after seeing Star Wars for the very first time!) That was the summer my stepdad committed suicide, and if I recall, you were on TO with me and we hiked up Prospector and slept in the kinnickinnick beds the night before I learned the news.

I found Shorty not too long ago!
