I'm with Scott here! I really want the chords to Whoa Back Buck! It's a really simple progression, but I'm terrible at getting songs from listening to them, so if someone is good at it this song shouldn't take more than a couple listens. Would be hugely appreciated, I can't find it anywhere...

Hi.
Has anybody got the words to "We're In The Same Boat Brother"?
I have three versions of this and I can not make sense of the last verse.
Can I suggest that when discussing chords or keys people make it clear if they mean CHORD SHAPES or CONCERT PITCH, as Lead Belly tuned down to B or C as I am sure most of you know. It can be a little confusing.
"The 12 string Guitar as Played Played By Leadbelly" is an excellent book for words, chords and technique.
Great site, by the way.
Huddiesblues.

The hardest part about learning Leadbelly's odd POSITIONS is how low he tuned his guitar. In regular tuning they all sound wrong. Get your12 string down to C and it starts to make sense.

Chaz, "In New Orleans" is one of the few Leadbelly songs I just HAD to learn (I'm not really a big 12-string player). Of course, his big Stella was tuned at least a whole note low, maybe two, so the actual pitch is not the chords you're playing. But it's played in "G". Listen to it a lot so you'll hear all the runs that lead from chord to chord. It starts with a double hammer-on on the A string that goes up and then down, landing on the bass string at G. It goes immediately to a D, then a couple of hammer-ons and a run down to Am. Next runs lead down to E, then it goes to A, then run up to D. Then it all starts over again with the double hammer-on as before, all same pattern, which then resolves to G at verse end. Although it's hard to just play and strum without the runs, the chord pattern seems to be D-G-D, Em-Am, D-G-E-A-D. Hope this isn't too confusing- it's hard to write down for an "ear-learner" like me. Anyway, it is surely one of the best examples of his genius on 12-string.

"The 12-String Guitar As Played By Leadbelly - An Instruction Record by Peter Seeger" was a 2-LP & booklet Folkways release (FI 8371, 1962).
Folkways, through Smithsonian, might have/ make it available in CD form nowadays.....

Or, you might get a recording & listen to the chords. I used to have a record, one of the ones where someone from a college went to get him from the prison & record him playing & sold it "for posterior" which was a wonderful piece of history, I thought. He played open chords, used no capo, and tuned a guitar to not exactly concert pitch. Nevertheless, one may listen to the songs he played & sang, & hear the exact chords he used. Your local library might have a recording, otherwise it might be hard to find.

Try this for a book: Leadbelly
Doesn't seem to be much out there, but also try Harry's. Only Goodnight, Irene, is on the site noted by Sorcha. The rest are Dylan, etc.

JustWonderin,

If you use the Digitrad and Forum search engine in the upper left hand corner of this web page, you can find lyrics to over 25 songs. If you want chords for a specific song, just make a chord request in the forum. Usually someone will reply.

There are two Lead Belly song books that may still be in print. Click on Support the Mudcat at the top of the page and search Amazon.com. Stefan Grosman's Guitar Workshop has an instructional video available. Click Here.

The chord structure of most of Lead Belly's songs is usually easy. It is technique that makes him the "King of the 12 String Guitar".

And/or...???

You may find chords along with the lyrics by searching for a particular song. With luck, said song will be part of a Leadbelly site with more of the same.

Go to Google (www.google.com) and type in a line of the song. If you are CERTAIN you have the correct lyrics, put your entry in quotation marks. If the song is on the web, it's a pretty sure bet Google will find it for you.
