Subject: L-o-double l-i-p-o-p spells lollipop
From: GUEST,WilliamBoth@hotmail.com
Date: 01 Aug 03 - 01:18 PM

I remember a song way back at camp and am looking for the rest of it.

Here's what I remember:

"L-o-double l-i-p-o-p" spells lollipop ( lollipop)
It's a very special kind of candy (candy)
Guy who made it must have been a dandy (dandy)
L-o-double l-i-p-o-p you see.
It's a lick, from a stick, guaranteed to make you sick
It's lollipop for me!

C-a-s-t-o-r O-i-l spells castor oil (castor oil)
It's a very special kind of medicine (medicine)
Guy who made it must have been an Edison (Edison)
C-a-s-t-o-r O-i-l you see.
It's a sip, from a spoon, guaranteed to cure you soon
It's castor oil for me!

B-u-b-b-l-e G-u-m spells Bubble Gum (Bubble Gum)
It's a very special kind of chewing gum (chewing gum)
Guy who made it must have had a lot of fun (lotta fun)
B-u-b-b-l-e G-u-m you see.
It's a chew, and a blow, and a pop...
It's Bubble Gum for me!

D-a-v-e-n-p-o-r-t spells Davenport (Davenport)
It's a very special kind of love seat (love seat)
Guy who made it must have had a heart beat (heart beat)
D-a-v-e-n-p-o-r-t you see.
It's a hug, and a squeeze, and a "Oh, George, Please!"
It's Davenport for me!

Doesn't anyone else know this one?

Bill
Melody is the chorus (last part) of "Harrigan." -JRO-

Gee, Bill, I didn't know it had verses. My obnoxious little sister used to sing this one. Now I hate myself, because I find all her obnoxious songs make me nostalgic. Here's what I recall:
    L-o-double L-I-P-O-P spells Lollipop--Lollipop,
It's the only decent kind of candy--candy,
The man who made it must have been a dandy--dandy.
    L-O-double L-I-P-O-P you see
It's a lick on a stick guaranteed to make you sick,
    Lollipop for me!
I'll e-mail my sister and ask her to take a look. She's not obnoxious any more. Maybe she wasn't obnoxious then, but   I   thought she was. Now I wish I had learned her songs.

Well, yes, I do remember that song, but no other verses, at least not this week. The next time I'm in touch with my old camp buddy I'll ask her about it too. Something makes me think there's a verse about bath soap.

I do remember that the guy who invented the davenport must have BEEN a "heart beat." (Sorry, I don't know how to italicize here. Fix it, please, Joe!") I can't remember how the "chew and blow..." bubblegum line ends, but that's definitely not right. I'll keep thinking on it and maybe it will emerge from the depths of my long-term memory.

"L-o-double l-i-p-o-p" spells lollipop ( lollipop)
It's only decent kind of candy (candy)
The Guy that made it must have been a dandy (dandy)
L-o-double l-i-p-o-p you see.
It's a lick, on a stick, guaranteed to make you sick
It's a lollipop for me!

Oh, I'd rather suck on a lemondrop
Than trust my luck with a lollipop.
Cause I always drop my lollipop
and it gets all over ickey.

I've tried and tried but never could find
a lollipop that's halfway refined.

I sing this song every year at camp.

We sing it like this:

"L-o-double l-i-p-o-p" spells lollipop ( lollipop)
It's the only decent of candy (candy)
Guy who made it must have been a dandy (dandy)
L-o-double l-i-p-o-p you see.
It's a lick, on a stick, guaranteed to make you sick
It's lollipop for me!

C-a-s-t-o-r O-i-l spells castor oil (castor oil)
It's the only decent kind of medicine (medicine)
Guy who made it must have been an Edison (Edison)
C-a-s-t-o-r O-i-l you see.
It's a lick on a spoon, guaranteed to kill you soon
It's castor oil for me!

B-u-b-b-l-e G-u-m spells Bubble Gum (Bubble Gum)
It's the only decent kind of chewing gum (chewing gum)
Guy who made it musta had a lot of fun (lotta fun)
B-u-b-b-l-e G-u-m you see.
It's a pop, and a chew, and a comie, too...
It's Bubble Gum for me!

D-a-v-e-n-p-o-r-t spells Davenport (Davenport)
It's the only decent kind of love seat (love seat)
Guy who made it must have had a heart beat (heart beat)
D-a-v-e-n-p-o-r-t you see.
It's a hug, and a squeeze, and a "Oh, Johnny, Please!"
It's Davenport for me!

Well, this is how we sing it, and it's the best ever!
I love this song and I am 15. lol.

Also, I found this additional verse if you like it. We don't sing it at Camp, but I tried it and it fits with the tune.

Here it is:

O-U-T-H-O-U-S-E
Spells outhouse, outhouse,
It's the only decent kind of bathroom, bathroom,
The guy that made it must have been a really loon, real loon,
It's O-U-T-H-O-U-S-E
Spells outhouse, outhouse,
It's a hole in the ground,
Don't fall in or you'll drown,
It's an outhouse for me.

We sang the Lollipop verse pretty much as written above, but with the last line as "Lollipop for me -- not you, but me"

And then the castor oil verse as above:

It's a lick on a spoon guaranteed to kill you soon
Castor oil for you -- not me, but you.

In the bubble gum verse we sang

"Man who made it must have been a bum" (rhymes better)

And then,

"It's a mess on your face guaranteed to stay in place"

We also sang a Hershey Bar verse:

H-E-R-SH-E-Y (You have to sing the S-H fast) B-A-R spells Hershey Bar.
That's the only decent kind of candy
Man you made it must have been a dandy
H-E, etc
B-A-R, you see
It's a snack in a pack
Guaranteed to make you fat
Hershey bar for me -- not you, but me.

(Hey, I didn't write it.

I've never heard the Davenport verse.

And, at my camp, the lemon drop song was completely separate from this one here with the "Harrigan" tune.

The lolly pop song emerged from about a camp fire about 65 years ago and has been going through my head all day. Thank god for the internet and google. Here's how my memory version goes.

L-O-doubleL-Y
P-O-P spells LOLLYPOP LOLLYPOP
The man that makes them is a dandy
He never made a better piece of candy

L-O-doubleL-Y
P-O-P you see
Just a lick on a stick
and it never makes you sick
Lollypop for me

I learned today from one of the above entries that the melody is Harrigan. Thanks

We sang:

L-O- DOUBLE L I P-O-P spells lollipop, lollipop
The man who made it was a dandy
There will never be a better piece of candy

L-O- DOUBLE L I P-O-P spells lollipop, lollipop you see
It's a lick on a stick that'll surely make you sick

Lollipop for me, not you but me!

Funny how the same song is learned in so many ways. I get up in New Jersey... I wonder if the variations are regional. Never knew there were other versus. Funny how you remember these songs when you have a newborn and you're searching for songs somewhere deep in your brain and this pops up out of nowhere in the middle of the night and you haven't recalled it in 32 years! ;)

I knew a kid who used to sing the Davenport part. As I recall, Davenport was actually his last name, which is probably why he knew it.
