KB the decision has been made already!!! I'm just hanging on to 'I was there at the beginning man' for sentimental reasons. I shall reveal my (new) self in a few days/weeks. Perhaps when we get to 500 posts. Two things to celebrate, 500 posts and the unveiling of my new name! Can we have a virtual party? That is of course if I haven't already left the thread forever, something I am giving a lot of consideration to at the moment.

Thanks for your recommendations Rapaire and KB. Based on them I will indeed buy the film (as long as it's still just £2.99) and will report back and tell you all about it. It was the 'almost buying the book' that clinched it for me. In some strange way it seems we are meant to watch this film, don't you think? And when I say we I mean all the 85 billioners. So can everyone watch the film and then feedback, say by November 17th? Even if the film's rubbish the feedback will up the posts, especially if there is a bit of controversy (my speciality).

Not watching this movie was one of the most incredible things I have never experienced. Truly life altering in a very affirming sort of way. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I have not seen the movie. I almost bought the book at a second hand store once if that helps any. Come to think of it, I guess I almost bought the book at a second hand store once whether it helps any or not.

KB mentioned the movie 'Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe'. It's on offer at HMV for £2.99 at the moment. Is it any good? Don't want to waste £2.99 on a film that isn't any good.

Talking about chimps, I thought the 'controversy' idea went very well really, don't you? Could have done with a few more (any) pro-green tomato eaters to hot up the debate a little (good try Peace but it was easy to tell your heart wasn't in it), however I think the wider forum now realises that if it's controversy they want, look no further than the 85 billion thread.

You'll all be pleased to know that I have therefore decided NOT to quit the thread forever, for the time-being.

Has anyone else got ideas for upping the rate of posting?

Anyway back to chimpgate….

My in-laws live in the South (U.S.) where they eat fried green tomatoes as though it were an actual food. I knew about the book and movie (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whislte Stop Cafe) but thought they were fiction. I was persuaded, against my better judgment, to try some (they were pretty good, actually) and have never felt quite the same since. They're poison I tell ya, poison.

Before I was married I had a terrible time keeping track of dates. One night I thought I was with Natalie and it was Sue, another time I though I was going to be with Kathy and I didn't have anyone lined up at all. But the worst one was the time I was supposed to go out with Bobbi and it turned out that I was supposed to be joining my old buddy Bobby and the boys for beer and poker. And I won't even get into the time a guy asked me if I wanted to meet his swimsuit-model cousin for a date and she handed me some sticky sort of fruit thing.

I will step into that breach. Green tomatoes do not deserve the bad press they have received from ne'er-do-wells on this thread. First, any comparison of potatoes and tomatoes is ridiculous. Tomato milk shakes are going to catch on sooner or later. Such cannot be said of potato milk shakes. Those of you who think you know everything are a real pain in the ass to those of us who really do. Yes green tomatoes are not good for you. For that the answer is simple. Feed them to your cat. Put the rest in a brown paper bag and let them methanate. When they turn red, stuff the cat, which will by this time have died, and cook at 350 degrees for three hours, basting every ten minutes with a mild lager. Garlic goes good with this.

Even though I live in Idaho, I don't eat potatoes, either. For the same reason.

And green tomatoes, even fried or chutneyized, still contain the poisons.

Don't eat 'em 'cause you'll die.

Parenthetically, potatoes aren't really vegetables at all. They are actually blind subterranean parasit es similar to slugs or nematodes, which are attracted to the roots of the potato plant and which they find by using sensory organs in the so-called "eyes". They attach themselves to these roots and suck nutrition from the plant and if this goes on long enough the plant will wither and die. Potatoes are considered a crop because people planted the plants in fields to attract the potatoes, which migrated to the plants and which continue to do so today. Idaho, for example, used to be a large, high, plateau but so many potatoes migrated that whole areas collapsed and formed valleys and mountain.
